The young lads stealing the show again by the sound of it. The futures bright. They certainly did, Murray was excellent as was Brown. George McReady also stood out.

The young lads stealing the show again by the sound of it. The futures bright. Iwan Murray was superb, him and Nathan Brown. Matty Waters is the best left back we have, and George Green is enormously talented. Macready did well also. He put his free kick to the keepers right, but the ref disallowed it as he hadnt blown his whistle. Cue GG putting it into the top left corner. Superb. Winsford were poor, but some good performances and clinical finishing made for a decent night out.

Stuart Crilly & George Macready were the standouts for me of those who haven’t got into the first team yet. Brown & Murray were class. Smalley was disappointing though, especially given that he was given the armband.

It’s nice to progress to the next round after a professional display tonight where we deserved to win due to the floodgates opening in the second half. Bern and Jonno couldn’t make it tonight as they opted to watch Guiseley play at Southport, but credit has to go to Calum McIntyre who mixed a handful of his youth team players together with the likes of Deane Smalley and George Green who all combined well to put in a promising performance.
The first half was a drab affair as Winsford were arguably the more threatening side. We were nowhere near poor but we struggled to adapt to the bobbly, sloping pitch as quick as we would’ve liked which resulted in a scrappy half. To their credit Winsford had a few tough lads on the field who caused us problems at times. They had a decent spell for 10-15 minutes where they were livelier than us and looked more likely to find the net. Our defence and midfield battled well though to withdraw that pressure and began to get a foothold on the game as the half went on. It was a shame to see Lloyd Marsh-Hughes drop out of our XI last minute due to an injury sustained in the warm up. He was fantastic at FC United on Saturday so hopefully this is only a minor knock as we don’t want another one of our lads in the treatment room. We went into half time still searching for the opener which was a massive turning point for us.
Our second half display was fantastic as we played some excellent football to expose Winsford. You could tell they started to tire due to them being 3 leagues below us, but we still created some great stuff. The two smallest lads on the pitch combined together for our opener as a cross from Iwan Murray was actually HEADED in by Nathan Brown which is something of a rarity for such a small lad. It was still a great goal which set us on our way for a further 3 goals. The floodgates began to open as George Green fired in an impressive free kick from around 20 yards to double our lead. Interestingly enough George actually ‘scored’ 2 free kicks, as his initial (practice) shot was taken before the referee blew his whistle, but was ruled out as the ref wasn’t ready. Rather ironically, his real free kick flew in again which redeemed himself for his chalked off goal just seconds before. I was really impressed with Green tonight as he was a good talker off the ball and influenced our younger lads really well. Our third goal came just minutes later as Iwan Murray finished off an excellent run to slot home his deserved goal following great work. Finally, we scored our 4th as Nathan Brown lashed home to net his deserved brace. In the end we managed to book our place for the 2nd Round quite convincingly with a dominant second half display. Iwan Murray was immense tonight as he was brilliant going forward with his pace and trickery. Nathan Brown also caused Winsford’s defence a lot of problems as he was very lively and deserved his two goals. Connor King made his first senior appearance in goal this evening and managed to keep a clean sheet which I’m sure he will be happy about. He didn’t have a great deal to do but I was impressed with his kicking in particular which was nice to see. Our defence did well to keep a clean sheet and managed to deal with a feisty Winsford side successfully. I was particularity impressed with Matty Waters who exposed Winsford well and had another really good game.
It’s great to go through to the 2nd Round but for the time being we must focus on the league. We return to the Swansway on Saturday where we host Guiseley so please get down there to help our lads make it 3 wins in 7 days.

My match highlights: Includes all of the goals so enjoy! Always appreciate these Rio! Credit must go to our Academy, as they are not just producing skilful players, but players who are ready to step up to the man's game - not afraid to mix it when the situation demands.

Winsford were poor, but some good performances and clinical finishing made for a decent night out. I've never understood that. Surely the operative word in 'free kick' is 'free', so why do you have to wait for a whistle? It's a rule that only seems to apply to free kicks in a shooting position and is nonsense in my opinion.

I suppose the main difference is that the ref needs to step-out the wall, do his magic spray etc.

I suppose the main difference is that the ref needs to step-out the wall, do his magic spray etc. If you take it while the ref’s pacing out the yards and blast it straight at a defender, then that’s you’re own fault and you shouldn’t get another go. If on the other hand you ping one in the top corner before the other team’s got their wall together, good on you!
