I think this year has been a real success so far and has come at a critical time with the club slipping back down the leagues and going part time.
We all know we have an ageing fanbase and if we want the Blues to be playing in front of 2000+ regularly in 20 years time we have to take steps now to achieve this.
A potential shot in the arm would be to use the 1970’s Seals badge from next season and for however long it is beneficial to the club. Most clubs that reuse a historic crest do it for a season or two. They normally do it for an anniversary or for their centenary year.
This year more than any I can remember there have been more references by fans and players (mostly on social media) identifying us as Seals. It’s a unique identity in football and British sport and I can only think of positives if we were to use it again as our official crest for a season or two. This isn’t just a nostalgic move but a potential chance to grow interest/knowledge of the club locally and if done well nationally. There would be an initial boost to income through merchandise which would offset any signage the club would want to change in the ground and on the website etc.
What harm could it do?

I’ve always been in favour of officially bringing the nickname back. It’s a unique nickname and has a link (albeit a faint one) to the club’s history.

A very good idea this, worth pushing forward to powers that be.

I saw a bloke with an inflatable seal last week at fc Utd !! Made me chuckle seeing that! I genuinely think it would be a cheap, effective and popular intervention to give the club a shot in the arm. SSEEEAAAALLLLLSSSSSSS!!

I saw a bloke with an inflatable seal last week at fc Utd !! As the proud owner of Harry The Seal I can confirm he had a lovely debut away to the Plastic Mancs last week. Still deciding if he just an away day fan.

I’ve always been in favour of officially bringing the nickname back. It’s a unique nickname and has a link (albeit a faint one) to the club’s history. Me too. I remember when Coca-Cola sponsored the Football League and there used to be an advertisement in the programme with each of the 72 club's colours and their nickname. Our nickname, 'The Blues', was one of the very few that wasn't unique which I thought was a shame.

Top idea. All for that . Was actually thinking it myself last week at fcum. Fair does to CH3STER for bringing it up. I would of suspected a backlash on here but seeems a good positive reaction to the suggestion. Can we make it happen please?

I can't quite see how bringing back a badge the majority of 'younger' fans won't remember would encourage new fans. That logic is completely lost on me.
The nickname Seals remains. We shouldn't change our current, unique badge at all. It's unique in that it represents us as a fan owned football club.

If we were to be truly unique in re-branding around choices of animals, we could change the animal on the logo each season, to the animals in the zoo. First Season : Pelly the Pelican. Second Season: Mary the Chimpanzee, etc. Obviously a light hearted approach, but it would definitely gain attention.

I thought the 'Seals' died when we left Sealand Road.
My all abiding vision of seals is men with clubs and spikes 'culling' seals in a most horrific way in the 70s and 80s (not sure if it still happens). For that reason I feel the multiple animal approach might be better.

Yeah it’s a big part of our history but changing a club badge ain’t gonna bring back the missing 1,800 from the Evostik days.

Younger fans in the city might not know that we had a side that got to a major cup semi final and played home games in front of 20,000. The fact of the matter is if we did use the old crest for a couple of years it wouldn’t put people off. It would either stay the same or if done right increase interest in the club. We want local young people to associate with the club, maybe the Super Seals is the answer! We need to find ways of attracting new fans and building our image, maybe this change in direction with a link to a very successful period for the club Could be the start of something Maybe Mr Murphy, planned expansion at the Deva and the current managers need something like this to piggy back on?

I wouldn't change the badge, but agree that it's a superb marketing opportunity to play on the widely used Seals name. The club should use the twitter hash tag #UPTHESEALS build its recognition and this leads nicely on to its use in merchandising. It creates a unique identity unlike "the blues". Throw in a bit of board advertising of #UPTHESEALS at the ground & in the program and it could gain some real traction. Worth a shot.

It’s not going to bring back the missing 1800 initially, we need to think of the long game. One of a few reasons we have an aging fan base is because of our success in the 70’s. If we tweak our identity now and really get behind it we could see an increase in support. If it doesn’t work we could potentially have a couple of years of something different and be quids in on merchandise. Plus we get to rake up a successful period in the clubs past while those that got to whiteness it are still with us

I don't think a new badge would need to be rebranded, this is something we should be looking at to keep the identity going. Maybe something on the shirt than the badge.

Any true supporter of Chester would have nothing to do with that,it means nothing to Chester supporters,if i remember correctly it came from a competition in either the chronicle or the observer,it means nothing we are either Chester or City that is is it.

I like the badge as it is. It’s inkeeping of modern times and it will always be to me the rebirth of the club. I was there the night it was revealed and it will stay with me forever. Using seals is great for an older generation. I have no idea how we get the younger generation down to the ground. It is the million dollar question. Maybe we should ask people of that age what the barriers are? Who wouldn’t want a life time of pain and disappointment?

Always loved that badge, i remember back in the late 70's my dad buying me the shirt which was worn with pride at school. Stood out I did amongst the scouse shirts, bursting with pride in supporting my local club, come on you seals. Love it.

I’d be in favour of keeping the current badge for reasons of continuity but deffo in favour of the original suggestion of utilising the Seals nickname more .... would be nice to see Seals written in the seats of the main stand

The Stadium was sited on Sealand Road until 1990 and the Blues were commonly referred to as the Seals for that reason. When they relocated to Bumpers Lane, following their two year exile in Macclesfield, they kept the badge, but it’s fair to say it’s been a Bumpy ride ever since, culminating in it’s death and the end of it’s connection with seals in 2010. A magnificent effort by such as Chris Pilsbury saw a new club rise, Phoenix like, and a new badge was created. Out of sheer respect to all those instrumental in the creation of this new club the new badge should remain. I would be happy enough to see a reference to the past, with a small seal at the base of the new badge, but the badge should always have the new beginnings at it’s heart.
