First week of pre season done and the first friendly boxed off. Yesterday was a good work out with some players looking a lot sharper than others. I know pre season is about match fitness and getting personnel used to different formations and getting used to playing with new team mates.
But the thing that is starting to become more and more noticeable from last season and yesterday is that we have no creativity in midfield. No one seems to be able to play a forward pass with any vision.
Yes we have Roberts,Stopforth and Burton but essentially they all come from the same mould. Gary Roberts should have it in his locker but seems to be playing to deep to be effective in the playmaker role. Last season I assume George Green was earmarked to play this role but as we know he came up short and I think if we are to push on this season then this needs to be addressed by bringing someone who can open up defences and add goals from midfield or it could be another season spent on the fringes.
For me other than a keeper this should be our priority. We have the strikeforce we just need to give them the supply.

By all accounts we missed out on Bond, who went to York, so assume it's something on the managers' priority list.

Clear to me our creativity comes from out wide and central midfield is very much workhorse, much like Liverpool. Definitely agree we need a more creative/attacking option in midfield though if we’re deviating from our 442 of last year. Looked a 3412 yesterday. Our no 11 from Burnley’s academy yesterday looked to be playing an advanced role but didn’t really impress me? Suggests we’re looking at that type of player though.

Begs the question though, is a number 10 needed at this level? More often than not seen as a luxury player, is work rate more essential? I can’t remember ever having a good number 10 that didn’t divide opinions, most recently Durrell and before that McConville, both slagged off weekly on here but went on to play at higher levels, and perform well at those levels.

Hardly touched the ball & when he did he tended to lose it.

I would take any players from Wigan they look like a team that is schooled the right way, the speed they moved the ball around was very impressive and it hardly ever went backwards.

Should've kept George Green on 6 month deal to properly prove himself now he's injury free There's your creative midfielder he's no ancient either

[b I'm thinking more of a Stewart Drummond type player. Someone who adds to the midfield dynamic rather than plays just behind the striker in the typical number 10 role. But agree that Durrell and McConville were excellent for us but were not appreciated universally especially by the Managers at the time.

At this level with part-time non league players it’s 4-4-effing-2 all day long IMO. Two workhorses in the middle, two flying wingers supplying the ammo to a target man and a fox in the box. Don’t over complicate things.

I thought the no11 was quite busy first half , I would like to see more of him before getting rid . funny how we all see different things during games its all about opinion I suppose.

In fact, regardless of his injury his general attitude was poor and had the type of character to destroy teams not build them. There was no signs of his attitude improving at any stage and the sense of desperation in played with was a tough watch at times. There must be far better out there.
