Our cup journey resumes tomorrow as we make the venture to Hertfordshire to play Royston Town away in the Buildbase FA Trophy 2nd Round where we look to record our fourth consecutive win. We are starting to put a nice run together in this competition now, having already defeated Brackley Town and Hednesford Town. This will be another banana skin tomorrow though, as our opponents have beaten two higher league clubs to get to this stage, so we must put out our strongest team to avoid a big upset.
Our last match was on Tuesday night as we beat Stockport Town 1-0 at home in the Cheshire Senior Cup 2nd Round in what was a rather mediocre game of football. The first half was quite average as our opponents gave us a good game, and ten minutes in Yousuf Abdullah scored a disallowed goal for Stockport Town to give us a warning sign. Meanwhile, the second period wasn’t much better than the first due to little goalmouth action, but ten minutes in Danny Elliott made it 1-0 to us thanks to a wicked deflection. Stockport Town still tried to fight back though, and substitute Rourke Neal dinked a shot against the crossbar to almost equalise for them. We were more comfortable in possession though, and did enough to secure our spot in the last eight.
Royston Town ply their trade in the BetVictor Southern Premier League Central and are having a brilliant season in both the league and the cup. Our opponents play just one division below us, which is the same league that Hednesford Town play in, who we dumped out in the last round. The Crows are certainly flying high in their league, as they sit in third place with two games in hand. If they win those two matches then they could reach the summit, and if they continue their momentum then they could be playing National League South football next season. Meanwhile, in the cup Royston have beaten the likes of Wealdstone and Boreham Wood to get to this stage, so once again they will raise their game to cause another shock against us tomorrow.
In general I can’t wait for this as it will be our first Southern match for a while, and a new ground to visit too. We should have enough quality to progress as we have the ability to play good football, and we have been very solid at the back lately. However, we need to be switched on mentally because psychologically it’s important we avoid an upset. After this stage the FA Trophy will only consist of 16 teams so it’s starting to feel a little bit more important now. We have a decent chance of progressing, so it’s important we don’t blow it now as we are building a nice run in this. Come On You Blues!
Score: Royston Town (Adams) 1-2 Chester FC (Dudley, Stopforth)
Attendance: 759 (173 Chester FC)
My predicted lineup:
Griffiths
K.Roberts Jones Grand Taylor
Jackson Stopforth G.Roberts
Dudley
Hughes Asante
