Just looking around twitter and there are a load of tweets about Chester FC and boycotting Puma.
What's that all about?

Puma sponsor Israeli football leagues including teams based in the occupied Palestinian territory.

Seems to be some sort of campaign being directed at us in particular though.
Presumably word has got round that we use Puma and campaigners have jumped on to it. My understanding is that we can't wait to start "boycotting" this deal with Puma!

The BDS movement were outside the ground before the York home game a few months ago flying the Palestine flag and handing out fliers about Puma.
Solidarity with them in their plight to raise awareness of the racist, illegal apartheid regime.

Yes, I didn’t start the thread.
Anyway I didn’t think not wanting children to be used as target practice by thugs with guns was particularly “leftist” to be honest.

But for balance BDS is also viewed as an thinly vieled antisemitic movement. Therefore inappropriate for our club to be drawn into this campaign.

Politics aside, we need to get out of the Puma deal because it's shit and was by all accounts a big mistake, and I believe we will do as soon as we can. This campaign is pretty unfair bad publicity for the club as we're tied to a deal at present.
Long term, there is a debate to be had about the ethics of the manufacturers from whom we source the kit.

The Conservative government will ban BDS as you correctly say they are an anti-Semitic organisation. As for the Israeli Premier League the only team that do not play "Palestinian" players are Beitar Jerusalem. All the others do!

Seriously, I may have to rethink my support for the movement if what you say is true. Can you provide any web links? Agree with Lobster regarding sourcing an ethical kit manufacturer going forward - a company that doesn’t use Far East child sweatshops, a company that pays its tax etc.

They’re vile anti-semites & I’d strongly advise you to take your support elsewhere. There are charities that do work to help in the region without the taint of anti-semitism for example.

Wait, so criticising a government politically is anti-Semitic, simply because that government is the government of Israel?
Not having that mate, sorry. The same way criticising Robert Mugabe for all of his evils wasn’t racist.
If someone can point out some actual anti-Semitism from this movement then I’ll hold my hands up, honestly.

Yes, this thread had gone political but, rightly or wrongly, our football club is being linked to the issue, and of course we will soon be due a kit contract I’d imagine. Puma have been absolutely terrible for us.

Puma have been absolutely terrible for us. Our support for Puma is nothing more than a bad deal gone even worse, I don't suppose we did any due diligence before signing a deal with a kit supplier and why would we? We can't do anything about it now so maybe it's best to not draw further attention to the matter!

Agreed.
Pretty sure ethics was mentioned in the board’s programme notes recently but they have to strike the right balance with cost and stock availability - unfortunately “cheap” is generally bulk stock, minimum order and most likely unethical.
Ethically sourced, more local suppliers will be more expensive. As we know too well we as a club don’t have the riches other clubs do so we’re going to have to compromise somewhere.
I grew up with the likes of Errea, Le Coq Sportif, En-S and SuperLeague making our kits. It’d be good to go that random again.

Off the shelf shirts with Chester logo and sponsor printed would be anywhere between 5 and 15 quid per shirt depending on MOQ. We sell for 40 odd. Even at 30 quid a shirt that's a tidy profit imo. Ethics in football shirt production don't really count when most of the premier League sides buy from suppliers who effectively employ slave labour in sweaty factories! Political issues or not, it's a commodity market where every club is looking for cheapest purchase price and highest profit margin

When you’re only criticising the Jews for the things that they do wrong (both actual & imagined) instead of the actual terrorists who put those children in harms way in the first place then yes, it’s due to anti-semitism. Their whole purpose as an organisation is to reduce support for the state of Israel, that goes against the Jewish people’s right to self determination which is anti-semitism according to internationally accepted definition.

This is an ethical debate that the club has been dragged into on social media though, so I'd say it's hard to discuss it without bringing political stances into it.

We shouldn't be going too deep into the politics though. Our primary concern should be avoiding this from tainting the club in future and seeing how we can possible unattach ourselves from puma at the earliest opportunity! Possibly even building a social clause into future contracts allowing us to break free should this type of thing happen again. I couldn't give a shite who's supposedly Anti Semitic or whatever and we shouldn't be concerning ourselves as a football club with heresay

It's pretty weird for you to describe them as "the Jews" - would you say "the blacks", "the gays" or "the Muslims"? They aren't one big homogenous group who all act and think the same. Secondly, you can't just use "the Jews" as a term that is synonymous with Israel in the way that you have. Criticism of Israel is not criticism of Judaism, much as you seem to be suggesting that it is.

I couldn't give a shite who's supposedly Anti Semitic or whatever and we shouldn't be concerning ourselves as a football club with heresay It's a bad example of an ethics in football debate, because it just seems to be a clumsily coordinated Twitter campaign from a pro-Palestinian group. If they actually approached the club and asked about our deal with Puma, I'm sure somebody would explain it to them. It seems though that they've just seen that our kit is manufactured by Puma and decided to apply pressure on the club by spamming Twitter.
Unfortunately, these things can spiral out of control on social media, and it's possible the club may feel the need to put out a statement if it grows any bigger. Hopefully it won't.
Going forwards, I would like to see the club bear ethics in mind when choosing the manufacturer, rather than just go for the cheapest deal. The positive publicity from doing so might make it a good financial decision as well. I'd like us to dare to be different at times, but I understand money talks.

So would suggest that a Moderator is neutral with regards to potential divisive content on a football forum?
However Sychden Blue ex Mancot Blue has always nailed his political bias to the mast.
And you wonder why many supporters who like me have supported our club over decades have ditched Deva Chat over such shite content...well I'm another..I'm done.
Good luck snowflakes !
