Let's try and get another music thread going. What albums released this year have really impressed you?
In no particular order, I would go for:
IDLES - Brutalism
The best British punk album in a generation. Witty, angry, controversial, heartfelt, real. And musically a cut above as well. Exactly what this country needs at the moment.
Public Service Broadcasting - Every Valley
Pretty impressive for an album about the decline of Welsh coal mining to reach the top 5 in the album charts. Deservedly so, too.
Post War Glamour Girls - Swan Songs
Criminally overlooked post-punk band from Leeds. Everything about these is absolute quality. Fantastic lyrics, distinctive vocals, really well-crafted songs. Saw them a couple of months ago in front of about 30-40 people. They deserve so much more.
Slowdive - Slowdive
A lot of disappointing 'comeback' albums this year, but this is right up their with the best stuff from their heyday as one of the shoegaze 'Big Three' alongside My Bloody Valentine and Ride.
The Drums - Abysmal Thoughts
Consistently solid, these guys. Just the right balance of being melodic, but with enough edge not to be cheesy.
Sleaford Mods - English Tapas
Probably not as good as their last two, but there's nobody else doing what they're doing. Love their anger!
Protomartyr - Relatives In Descent
Again, I preferred their previous album, but there's a lot of depth on this one. I've listened to it tons of times and I still think it might be a 'grower'.
PLAX - Clean Feeling
Discovered this totally by mistake. Fast, raw punk from Texas.
And, if I may set a rule for talking about music on this forum, no doing an NFBF and replying by saying "I've never heard any of these!" If you've never heard of them, you know how to use YouTube, or Spotify/iTunes if you're feeling a bit more adventurous, so give them a listen. Or don't, but either way don't boast of your musical ignorance!
