Not NLN but not really worthy of a new thread...see that Macc have sacked their entire coaching team, plus head of recruitment. Makes you wonder how much they have gambled on promotion. No consolidation going on there that's for sure 😂 Any bets on the new manager being announced as R Savage? CLUB STATEMENT FROM ROBERT SMETHURST 25 Oct 2023 | First Team, Latest News Further to last night’s Northern Premier League – Premier Division fixture against Worksop Town, we have made the incredibly difficult decision to part company with Head Coach Mark Duffy, Assistant Head Coach Sammy McIlroy, and Head Goalkeeper Coach Dean Baker. In addition to this, Head of Recruitment Jimmy Holmes will also be leaving his role at the Football Club. All four individuals have been a pivotal factor in all that we have achieved to date and without them, none of this would have been possible. Helping us achieve two successive promotions is something which all four individuals can take an infinite amount of pride and is something which we will forever be grateful for. Whilst their positive contributions can never be questioned, the challenges we have faced since being promoted to the Premier Division of the Northern Premier League have meant that changes need to be made. Despite everyone’s best efforts, four defeats in the last five games sadly have forced our hand. Before the 2023/24 season commenced, we made everyone acutely aware that our aim was to secure a play-off place and be competitive in every game we play. Whilst accepting the fact that the campaign remains in its early stages, the stark reality is that if our current form is allowed to continue unchecked then our objectives for the season would be placed in jeopardy. Quite simply, we are not prepared to risk that. Every facet of the Football Club (including playing staff) will be meticulously reviewed to ensure our incredibly high standards are maintained. We will do everything within our power to ensure that our objectives are met and will issue a further statement in due course.

Macclesfield FC’s new Manager for this week is Alex Bruce, who has no previous managerial experience. He recently co-commentated on our FA Cup tie at Tadcaster.

He didn't exactly come across as knowing much about that level of football during the game. Five managers within a year at a club supposedly on the up. By comparison we've had seven since 2010 (counting B&J as one appointment).

Director of Football Robbie Savage said the following: “We are delighted to announce that Alex Bruce will be the new First Team manager at Macclesfield FC, Paul McGuinness as Head Coach, Phil Bardsley as Assistant Manager, and Dan Ternent as Head of Recruitment. Looking at Alex, Paul, and Phil and with my upbringing, the key values of coming through the system at Manchester United is a fundamental part of why we made these appointments". macclesfieldfc.com/latest-news/silkmen-appoint-alex-bruce-phil-bardsley-paul-mcguinness-dan-ternent-as-new-coaching-team/

Maybe he got mixed up and thought he was appointing Steve Bruce....or Robert the Bruce? Not the brightest, Savage.

I think people thought there would be a wave of great managers who played under Alex Ferguson, all with the "Fergie factor", but actually most have them have been managerial flops. A lot of them have ended up in punditry just slagging off Man Utd.

Bruce is more an assistant manager with the role he’s going to have

No surprise there, I thought it was an odd appointment in the first place. They should look towards someone like Steve Watson.

No surprise there, I thought it was an odd appointment in the first place. They should look towards someone like Steve Watson. We’ve just passed the two-year anniversary of Watson’s appointment here with us. What a great coup that was at the time and what a good job he did steadying the ship with a strong calibre of player brought in - every one of his signings was a youth international and he also gave Harrison Burke his debut. A nice, honest bloke too. And a breath of fresh air not being on the socials following the two who he replaced. Shame it couldn’t work out at the end of that season but we’re in such a brilliant place now with One Of Our Own in the dugout and I wouldn’t change that for the world. Hope Steve Watson is back in management soon though, he’d be a good appointment.

It's harsh but it probably doesn't look great on his CV that York got promoted after they sacked him, and that league position wise he didn't really improve us, although that doesn't tell the whole story. Long term I didn't really think he was the answer for us and the mutual parting was probably a good thing, but he did steady the ship and seemed to have an eye for a player as you say. If we do go up this season you could possibly argue he's played a Nigel Pearson at Leicester role in our turnaround.

South Shields have lost every game since we won there in November, although they have only played three. They'd have hoped for a lot more from home games against Blyth and Peterborough Sports and an away game at Rushall.
Still seems harsh, but they're not known for being patient with managers.

Watson was better than the stats suggest with us. Took a while to really get going and had one shocking month but we ended the season as a pretty decent side with only 3 defeats in our last 12 and that was to the top three, two of which who got promoted. Gaps at that stage of the season widen, but roll the season on another month and we’d have been breaching the top half.
The downside with him was that he didn’t come across as the biggest motivator in the world. Darlington need an instant impact so might not be the best fit there. South Shields are in a decent position still, so that could work.

A THIRD managerial change within days involving a North East side in our league, as Graham Fenton has been sacked by Blyth Spartans and placed on gardening leave. Very surprising considering Blyth have taken four points off two sides in the top eight from their last two games.
