If everyone takes your view we would no longer have a club to support. Look how we willingly we all donated to save the club 18 months ago when we had our financial crisis.

Let’s start a vote! 1) put 1 for thicko 2) Dickhead! the new merchandise in the shop is much better and we were told more we be added - but as a club we have to have the funds in to buy it first!

I’ll never ever donate to the squadbuilder, I strongly believe that the club should operate as a business, not a charity. If the club wants my money then offer me something that makes me want to hand it over. Vague promises of improving the team aren’t it. I know I’m probably in the minority here & I’m absolutely not criticising those who donate or the volunteers who do a fantastic job but if they want my cash, I want something tangible for it. It doesn’t take much, I paid £5 for one of those crappy plastic Starbucks cups with the CFC crest hand drawn on the side. I’d happily buy calendars, bedsheets (for the kids), dressing gowns, pyjamas, coasters, posters, you name it. Unfortunately the merchandise is somewhat lacking & instead we keep hoping people will donate. Typical example of somene not getting "fan ownership" in its absolute sense. For the last 50+ years we've expected the Chairman Owner to put their hand in their pocket, to buy a new centre forward or strengthen the team, to get people in to watch the team won more games. Guess what? Assuming you are a CFU member, that owner is now you, I and many others. The natural extension of fan ownership is that we contribute to the playing budget. I get not everyone can afford to contribute. Also many choose not to. It's their choice. As devaboyreturns said, if a good number of us contribute a little, it will make a difference. If 500 of us put in £20 per month equals £10000 a month. That's £120000 a season. That would add about 25% to 30% to our playing budget. Just think what Bern and Jonno could do with that!

I tend to disagree. These people understand fan ownership, it’s just that collectivism and altruism are complete anathemas to them: it’s all about the primacy of the individual. Investing £10 in the playing budget goes completely against their mindset as this money would be used for everyone to enjoy, not just them. They would sooner use this money to buy some crappy merchandise as it would be theirs, exclusively theirs, nobody else’s. It’s the same thought process behind the Taxpayers Alliance, who would sooner pay no tax and step over homeless people on the way to the bank than contribute to society for the benefit of everyone. I blame Thatcher.

I recall that Squadbuilder donors were at one stage invited to an evening with the manager, or training session. Wasn't able to attend but no reason why something like that shouldn't be offered. Personally, I'm happy to donate for nothing but looks like that's not the wider view and it's a bit lazy to expect the fans to keep dipping into their pockets for zero in return. Offering some sort of unique experience actually costs the club next to nothing. It needs to be relaunched. Annoys me that even the collection boxes at the ground are defunct.

Relying on donations either from a sugar daddy or from hundreds of supporters, is building a house on sand. There’s absolutely no guarantee that money keeps coming.

It’s simply that I’m not prepared to donate money in the hope that it might help the managers to buy players that might help the team to do well. I want the club to do well & to do that they need to encourage fans in & encourage them to spend money. Holding out a begging bowl is never going to achieve the aim.

It’s a shame you spoilt it for yourself with those embarrassing remarks.

If the club wants my money then offer me something that makes me want to hand it over. Just having Chester FC is enough to make me want to donate whatever I can afford to and it's further driven by my desire to see the club be as competitive as possible. The club shouldn't have to offer anything in return, apart from spending the money as intended (ie on the squad).

Admirable sentiment, but if that's the case then why is Squadbuilder currently generating the, frankly, piss poor amount of about £540 a month? Clearly not working.

Mrwality is we are 6th football, commercially unless we move up sponsorship options will always be limited, so yes its down to fan owners to support the club to improve the squad, thereby improving performances, moving up the leagues, generating better commercial income. It’s not a Tory Labour Lib Dem or anything it’s simple business economics.

Totally agree its poor at the moment but I wonder if the last couple of seasons in the National League contributed to some apathy among some and that now we're heading in the right direction again, a big push to get more donations might get results?

This is exactly my point, donations are NEVER going to generate enough to cover one player’s wages. So it’s a poor model, we should be focused on maximising income through gate receipts, merchandise & supplementary spending like food & drink. It’s been said before but the same people can’t & won’t keep putting their hands in their pockets.

It's nothing to do with begging bowls, it's about empowering the fans. Back in the days of Terry Smith and Vaughan all we could do was beg but now the fans can make a difference, the fans are the owners, they are in charge.
It's not only about putting money into Squadbuilder. People could volunteer at the club to drive things forwards, to get more income from all the potential revenue streams but we struggle to find new blood. Yesterday's Volunteer's meeting was very poorly attended.
The Fundraising Working Group put alot of effort into organising events but usually it's only us and our close friends who support them.
If we hiked gate prices to maximise that revenue then it would prevent some from attending matches and go against our Community Ethos.

OK - so we are in charge - you've heard what we want - a visible fundraiser with an achievable specific target to reach within a specified time.

Well it's good that it has a target. It doesn't say by Christmas on the advert and the important thing is to have a visible moving target. I think more is needed for this to get rolling. Can someone cobble together a themed picture, blue & white Christmas or whatever with a strap line for what we are looking to achieve. People will buy into this much better than a banal press release.

If a squad builder secures a player or 2 which make a difference, then surely that's a positive. The higher up the league, the bigger the crowds and the better for the club - the returns on the squadbuilder will then be multiplied. There is a time when to push for this and a time when it's not worth it. Just now is the right time.

A fiver down on July. A trend that needs to be massively reversed...

Six weeks of the bin lids with their want, want, want also holidays, trips out etc. etc. August is always a tough month for the vast majority of us. All in all, I would suggest that £550 is acceptable in the circumstances. Let’s go for £750 for September - fingers crossed. Agree with a lot of previous posters that a ‘totalisator’ should be put into action. In the meantime, we’ll done to fasttoes for his much appreciated work at the club.

I appreciate you saying that, I do try to be mostly rational 😁 Maybe I’m not articulating my point of view very well. My take is that the club needs to compete while living with it’s means. Relying on donations isn’t a part of that. If we can’t compete at the right end of the table on the income we’ve earned then we don’t deserve to. Don’t get me wrong, as I said earlier in the thread I’m absolutely not criticising those who do donate & definitely not those who volunteer. If I won the euromillions I can assure you the club would do quite well out of it.
