So today the 71 EFL clubs on whether to allow Bury back in the league.
If they vote in favour of Bury then what’s the point of trying to live within your means. Clubs might as well just roll the dice and run up enormous debts trying to get promoted knowing full well that you can write off your debts and start again if things go wrong.
How can the EFL possibly introduce financial fair play measures and then allow teams to ignore them and let them back in the league when they go bust?
Let’s face it, most EFL clubs are in serious debt. Are they going to vote to kick Bury out when they know full well that they could be in the same situation in the next 12 months?
I know we’re all supposed to feel sorry for Bury, and I do feel sorry for their supporters. But is Steve Dale going to step down if they’re re-admitted or is he just going to write off the current debts, start afresh and then be in the same mess in a few years time.

We're right to feel sorry for them but we're also right to expect they won't be let off the hook when so many other clubs before them haven't been.

I noticed as well that one of the options they plan to vote on is whether to make League 2/Conference a one up, one down situation this season. That surely is not for the EFL to dictate? Why should a non-league club miss out on promotion because of Bury's woes?

The EFL Chairman will likely vote to look after themselves.
The crooked ones will feel they can squeeze a club dry, or over spend, and no harm is done. As the club could be reinstated the next year.
The honest ones will feel it's a safeguard of their club, if the worst happens.
Meanwhile the authorities pretend they're looking after the game. . . .

Never thought it would reach this far. What about their £14m debts. I thought that once you're out that it. EFL are a joke.

Why should a non-league club miss out on promotion because of Bury's woes? That's a disgrace. Bury even being allowed back into League 2 and not having to climb up again at all is a disgrace. If they rob the conference of a play off spot, the nerve of it, I'll send the efl chairman a poo in a vacuum sealed bag every week until next season.

Surely if the EFL allow them back into the league that opens the door for other clubs who have gone bust to sue them? So surely it can’t happen?

I don't expect anything other than the EFL Chairmen to look after themselves and vote to reinstate Bury next season.
Of course they don't appear to be grasping that Bury FC will most probably fold way before they get to next season what with existing levels of debt, a CVA that needs to be paid, no income into the club etc etc

Indeed. The widespread ignorance, misplaced sympathy and misreporting of the situation is staggering.

So could mean no play off's for the National league. and the loss of revenue for those clubs that would have been involved in them.

Sounds like the plan is to “promote” Bury back into EFL2 at the expense of a National League play off winner. Nothing like rewarding incompetence hey, but are we surprised? Surely the FA must have a say in this as the over arching authority, not that they have a good track record on governance issues.

So could mean no play off's for the National league. and the loss of revenue for those clubs that would have been involved in them. The sad thing is that those in control of the game rattle on about the importance of ‘grass roots football’ and then do absolutely nothing to encourage it. If the clubs vote today to allow Bury back in and only allow one club up from the National League do you think anyone apart from those in the National League will care? If they believe that the best way to decide what to do is to ask all clubs affected by the outcome to take a vote why are they including Championship clubs and not National League clubs. Whatever decision is made, it’s not going to have any direct impact on anyone in the Championship but it could have a significant impact on a National League club. The only conclusion you can come to is that, despite all the bullshit, no one actually gives a shit about ‘grass roots football’. I’m sure that if those in charge could go back to the days of re-election to the Football League rather than promotion and relegation they would.

If that’s what happens then the NL and all of its member clubs across the three divisions should be taking the EFL to the cleaners in the courts.

I doubt that the League 2 clubs will vote for them to be put back in. I think it would mean that a club will be relegated to the National league who would otherwise of got a reprieve (only one relegation place without bury)

I don't think the National League Committee would allow Bury in either the NL or NLN if the EFL boot them out today. The National League tend to be just as strict as any other league when it comes to protecting their competition.

The National League has a history of coming down a bit tougher on financial misadventures than the EFL. That said, I was surprised they allowed Gateshead in our league at the start of this season, so maybe they're softening.
I'd say Bury should reenter in Conference North at the highest. The Evo Stik First Division is probably more suitable though, or arguably even the North West Counties First.
Basically, they need to get a standard procedure in place for what happens to clubs if they drop out of the league and/or fold. It's not the first time it's happened and it won't be the last.

Whatever happens, there's certainly no need to stop anyone being promoted at any level. If they do end up back in League 2 (which they shouldn't), just keep it at two up, two down and slot Bury into the gap their own demise created.

Right decision thankfully. Feel really sad for Bury fans and employees. Size and history of club should have no bearing, but not sure what current “demotion” guidelines are for getting into new league. May depend if existing club remains as an entity or if a new club is formed. Good luck to Bury going forward in whatever form they are in.

Surely it’ll have to be as a new club rather than a re-invention of the old club and their £14M debts. The new club would probably have to call in a favour from FC United and play there. Be interesting to see if the local MP is still as interested in their plight when the publicity has died down.

But not now, They seem to have a 'victim mentality' going on. ''The EFL are against us'' ''you would think that other clubs would look after one of their own'' ''why do we have to show funds when no other clubs do'' (every club in the EFL has to show funds at the start of the season) The bare facts were that they were given lots of chances to sort it out, got loads of deadline extensions. I'm not sure that they have the will to start up a new club, because they still cannot accept that they will be in NWCL at best. Some of them want to keep the club going as it was BURY but I doubt that any league will let a club in who are £14m in debt and who are homeless

I thought there was a big overreaction on twitter and on here to the result.
Reading some of it, you'd think we played the U18s and lost 4-0. We brought in some experienced players to give them minutes, all of whom were capable of performing.
Had we lost by a few goals, you'd question the managers, but we were just shaded by a good side at our level. If the referee wasn't as inept as he was, we could well have gone through.
Disappointing, yes, but no scandal here. Sometimes you lose games of football.

To anyone from Bury who may be on this site. New club has to be formed, anything else would be suicide. Start off in hopefully NWC Premier Division and look forward to games against the likes of Ashton, Irlam, Bootle, Charnock Richard, Barnoldswick, Skem, Squires Gate, Hanley et al. At least you’ll own your club (as we do at CFC), enjoy the ride and have a laugh - but be warned, it won’t be as easy as you may think. All the best.

I see the MP there is accusing EFL clubs of "self-interest" in their voting. I don't understand that - how is it in any club's interest one way or the other whether Bury are in the league or someone else?

Bury not allowed back into L2 so now turning their attention to the National League! Surely they have no hope of getting in there, that would be outrageous.

Not that outrageous - seeing as only one team will be relegated from the Football League now for on-field performance, basically Bury would be the other relegated team.
