I notice that Solihull made Tuesday nights match against Sutton an " Honesty game" where fans paid whatever they wanted at the gate and drew in over 3,000 , would it work for us ?

I'm a season ticket holder but wouldn't mind some games being made 'honesty' games. Make the York City match in a couple of weeks an 'honesty' match and see 4,000+. I've heard a few fair weather fans say that they're going to this so expecting 2,500+ but with pay what you want, we could potentially get 4,000+. York should be bringing 500odd, they'd bring more themselves if it was an 'honesty'match. Come on Chester Fc make it happen asap. And plaster it everywhere so everyone knows about it. These are initiatives our club should be doing more regularly to get more fans in.

This is where it all began to get better for Lincoln City when they did this at McCarthy's first game in charge when he lost this game 2-1 but won the final 3 and averted relegation. I think it added about 2,000 to Lincoln's usual 2,500.

I'm all for the idea, but not sure a game like York that should attract an above average crowd anyway is the time to do it. Maybe save it for someone like Curzon Ashton or Kettering.

As you say Lobster the idea is sound but not the York game, we would make a big loss on this game just imagine how much a big York following is going to pay us to attend.

A smaller more local club like Curzon Ashton would be a better choice, if you live in the likes of Kettering would you be bothered travelling all that way, even if you could pay what you wanted too, i think diehards are more likely to come regardless. With CA fans its a bit differant, they may be a bit more tempted to make the trip if they could pay say a fiver or tenner entrance fee.

While many of our fans will donate even if they don't have to, away fans probably wouldn't, and it's not like they'll be back again next week.

Yes, good idea to have an honesty match....but not the match against York. As someone has suggested do it when we play the team with the smallest away support...it could be Curzon Ashton. I’m sure someone will know the team with the least away support. Also a mid-week game could be better.

A difficult one this...
Many of the clubs that have done something like this are privately owned clubs and do this kind of thing because they can afford to do it, and can afford to top up the difference on their normal take.
We at Chester are in a different situation of course and if you cast your minds back to the Retro Day that we did Last season we reduced the prices considerably for that game and whilst the theme went well we lost around £3500 in matchday revenue what with normal costs factored in of course. That attracted a minimal amount of additional fans that day.
So whilst it would be great to hold an 'honesty day' then we would be once again putting matchday income at risk, which as we know is a vital income stream throughout the season.

Just had a look at the Solihull Moors initiative. Over 3000 turned up for the game with about £3k being donated which will all go to the community side of things. In answer to Durdys question, as a fan owned club that is largely dependant on matchday income, I would say that, with a similar donation, at this time it wouldn't work for us as it would more than likely wipe out the increased average attendance income that we are currently getting and leave us fighting to break even at seasons end, but in order to showcase the team and help improve attendances going forward it would be worth keeping in the definitely maybe box. Incidentally the same game last year was their 3rd lowest attendance of the season and played on a Saturday.

All good and saying this but Solihull can afford to do this we cant afford to lose match day revnue as its our main source of income. Imo our prices our fine games just need marketing more and the people of Chester need to wake up and actually get behind the club for once

Imo our prices our fine games just need marketing more and the people of Chester need to wake up and actually get behind the club for once If we need a theme match then how about one specifically targetting lost fans? "Welcome Back Day", if you've not been to a match for a while we'd love to see you back etc. Put on some extra attractions. It would be a chance for the club to actively come out and show that lapsed fans are still wanted at the club. I think it would be a nice touch and probably bring better results than aiming at new fans.

Jeff Surely as a one off social experiment to attempt back some of our errant fans we could ask Stuart if we could cover any losses ( assuming there may be some) with a small percentage of his kind donation

I think this one is a game not to include as an honesty match based on it attracting non regulars either way. I'd expect York to bring well in excess of 1000, surely?

This game will probably see our biggest away following. We should be getting 3000 plus for this game. We haven’t got the resources Moors have got. I think it’s worth pointing out that they for a long time used to get 600/700 gates. Even with their rather rapid rise from the conference north they were still struggling with villa and Birmingham. (Most who watch them are really supporters of those two clubs). They are desperately trying to grow their fan base which resulted in the honesty game against Sutton Utd followed by the much reduced entrance fee against Bromley.

York will bring 800–1000 easy. Not so sure. The gate at Telford yesterday was 1,300-odd, with no away figure given. I would imagine maybe 300 York. Given it will be the top two playing can see them bringing about 600 tops.

If we're flying come February I'd expect to see 1200 plus up in York.
