We return to the Deva tomorrow afternoon where we entertain Alfreton Town at home in what is a must-win game. It is vital we pick up the three points in this one as the chasing pack are gaining ground on us. Southport have came out of nowhere to be level on points with us, whilst King’s Lynn Town moved above us on Tuesday night as they triumphed at Kidderminster Harriers. There are no excuses now as we have to pull our socks up and show our true mettle, otherwise our predicament will take another blow.
Our last match was last Saturday which saw us draw 1-1 away at Brackley Town. In general it was a poor game of football, but we can be pleased with a draw as our opponents haven’t lost at home in almost a year. We were second best in the first period as we struggled to play the ball on the floor, and defensively we were all at sea at times. That said, we got off to an excellent start as Brad Jackson scored a screamer near the edge of the area to make it 1-0 to us. Our lead only lasted for less than 10 minutes as Thierry Audel equalised for Brackley Town to make it 1-1. Danny Livesey did well to block the initial shot, but Audel was on hand to curl in the rebound. Meanwhile, our second half showing was a lot better as we strung together some nice moves to create an attacking intent. Despite our pressure we couldn’t muster a winner, but we were worthy of the point nonetheless.
Alfreton Town will be making the journey from Derbyshire having made a promising start to the season. Last weekend they slipped out of the play-off places due to in-form Spennymoor Town inflicting a 2-0 home defeat on them, but with the margins being so tight in this league they could move back into the promotion spots with a win tomorrow. The Reds’ current form is a bit below par considering the electric start to the season they made, as towards the end of August they endured four consecutive victories. Over the past few weeks our opponents have slipped to defeats against the likes of Farsley Celtic, Darlington, and Spennymoor, so let’s hope that we can add to their inconsistent run. Billy Heath’s sides are always tough to handle, but we managed to deal with them well last season thanks to an injury time win at home. We dominated the reverse fixture at North Street and how we didn’t win by at least four I will never know, but the result didn’t matter a great deal as it was a dead rubber.
We have two tough trips to the North East to come over the next few weeks so we need to prepare ourselves in the best possible way with three points tomorrow. Realistically, this game is our best chance of claiming a win out of our three upcoming matches so we must deliver. Our home record is still amongst the best in the league which is why we need to make the Deva a fortress once again. Come On City!
Score: Chester FC (Glendon, Waring) 2-0 Alfreton Town
Attendance: 1,873 (51 Alfreton Town)
My predicted lineup:
Griffiths
K.Roberts Livesey Grand Taylor
Jackson Glendon Stopforth
Hughes Waring Elliott
COYB!
