Thought the back 2 were brilliant today.
I counted 66 Alfreton fans. Yes the first half was that bad.

Poor game from both sides, neither of who could seem to control the ball In admittedly difficult conditions. Result however was deserved as Alfreton must be one of the most spoiling teams around who got their due deserts. One or two glimpses of class after substitutions as movement of forward players was better. Well done Blues, onwards and upwards. Just about warming up now. Thought 1700 ish was a decent gate on a foul day for an unattractive fixture. Would have been 1300 on a cold and wet Tuesday evening.

Sounds like a typical, nasty 1-0....which we won 3-0. Needed that. Thought we might struggle today, so excellent to get the 3 points and a boost for the GD. If we can get something at Gateshead, and with BPA next at home hopefully the start of a good run.

I honestly don’t know how Alfreton fans can turn up each week. They suck all fun out of watching football. Dour.
One of coldest games I’ve been to and one of the least entertaining too. Absolutely fantastic result though, any way you can win against a side like them is good enough.
Crowd actually decent when you look at the weather, it was minging. Was looking forward to the final whistle myself.
Gary Roberts and Danny Livesey were the standouts.

I think Alfreton came at just the right time for us today they were poor and offensively we were only slightly better, we just seemed a bit disjointed going forward but defensively on the whole we looked pretty solid, I think if we had been playing a better side we probably wouldn’t have won that game. But now onto next week the Managers will need to sort a few things out and I’m sure they will,Embrace the shitness it works both ways.😂

Surely it's only a matter of time before their fans turn on the manager. In those games you need to battle for everything and hope your quality gets you the result. It was a comfortable win in the end. Not pretty, but comfortable.

In my opinion the scoreline flattered us, but it is a sign of a good team when you manage to win a poor game by three goals. Considering our adequate recent form we had to win today, so this result will give us loads of confidence ahead of some tough upcoming games. Alfreton Town were a horrible side to play against with their foolish antics of kicking the ball away and going to ground softly, so it’s really nice to give them a pasting without getting into second gear.
The first half was one of the worst halves I have witnessed in a while, as it lacked a lot of quality. There weren’t many clear-cut chances, and the bitter conditions certainly had an effect because the game was lacking any direction. Alfreton’s first chance of the game went to Amari Morgan-Smith who blazed over from a few yards out. After that there wasn’t much action as both sides cancelled each other out, and the flow of the match was slow. Our opponents went very close to breaking the deadlock as a header from Shane Killock (brother to former blue Ross) clipped the top of the crossbar. Just a minute later though we went up the other end to score a really scrappy goal to make it 1-0 to us. Matty Waters floated the initial free kick in towards George Waring, who knocked the ball down to Danny Livesey to bundle it over the line. Alfreton Town had the ball in the net a few moments later, but thankfully Amari Morgan-Smith’s lob didn’t count due to an offside in the build-up. George Waring should have extended our scoreline as he missed an absolute sitter. Matty Waters flicked Brad Jackson’s delivery towards Waring, who blasted the ball over from about five yards out. The referee was very inept today, and one of his awful decisions was when he gave Alfreton a free kick despite Gary Roberts making a fine tackle. Fortunately Bobby Johnson’s attempt missed the target emphatically to bring the end to an uninspiring half of football.
I thought the second half was better as our attacks were much more efficient. We started off this period in excellent fashion as Danny Livesey notched home his second to make it 2-0 to us. Gary Roberts made a wonderful cross, and Livesey whacked the ball into the net to secure his brace. Alfreton enjoyed a lot of possession afterwards, but despite having lots of the ball they didn’t do anything meaningful with it. For the last 20 minutes of the half though we used the ball really well to kill the game. Our third goal was scored in comical circumstances, which summed the officiating up really as they didn’t know what they were doing. Joel Taylor remarkably scored directly from a corner, but the ref disallowed it due to a foul which is understandable. Whilst we were still celebrating the ‘goal’, Alfreton’s ‘keeper placed the ball down for the free kick. However, an Alfreton defender had no idea that the ref blew for a free kick so he booted the ball towards the centre spot in frustration (as he presumed Taylor’s goal stood). The referee, though, thought he had taken the free kick so as a result play resumed, and due to Alfreton switching off Danny Elliott capitalised to make it 3-0 to us. It was so, so, bizarre but that did not matter for us as it confirmed a perfect day at the office.
My man of the match for today goes to Danny Livesey who was effective at both ends. Defensively he was very solid with his terrific tackles, whilst he was a helping hand at the other end with his two goals. Gary Roberts was an improvement to recent matches because his passes were much more consistent, he was tenacious in the middle, and his delivery played a key role in our second goal. Russ Griffiths barely had anything to do, but I am pleased that he has got a clean sheet which will give him a huge boost. He performed really well last weekend, so for him to back that up by not conceding today will fill him up with confidence. Joel Taylor and Kevin Roberts both had good games too because Taylor made some great runs in the first half to win us a couple of corners. Meanwhile, Alfreton’s direct approach suited Robbo because he dealt with their wingers well and stopped them from having any openings.
This result will give us the world of good ahead of a trip to the dreaded North East next week. Our next match is away against Gateshead next Saturday who have performed solidly this campaign, so again this will be a test for us. We have a poor record against The Heed, so hopefully we will put that to bed by following up today’s great win.

Your report is spot on as usual Rio, I would just like to add that the substitutions made a difference late in the game when we began to tire. A strong bench makes all the difference when we need to close out a game..

He always wants to run at defenders and get on the scoresheet, rather than just see a game out, must be a nightmare for tiring defenders

It's a shame that the 'very, very cross brigade' have got him in their sight lines. He was getting pelters from the Harry Mac for playing the ball out to his centre backs - something he'd clearly been told to do. Grown men. Foaming at the mouth, they were.

Liked the look of Griffiths at the start of the season, had a wobble but was good in the games against York and Brackley. Clearly he's been told not to go long, unless there's no option. He was getting stick against York too. The problem lies not with him, but players not getting into space to receive the short ball. IMO he's a big improvement on Shenton but just needs to add a bit more consistency. His clearance kicking does leave me with heart in mouth sometimes. Think part of the problem is that we're just not used to keeper playing out from the back. My only issue it that it needs to go straight to a playmaker, not Grand whose distribution isn't great. Glendon should be the outlet, to get us moving up the pitch quicker.

Fair play to Elliott for that goal. He was switched on to what was happening and was waiting for them to do it. Plus he still had a fair bit to do actually.

Nothing wrong with Taylor’s goal IMO, though of course I’d rather our backup strikers like Elliott were scoring goals and gaining confidence.

Glendon should be the outlet, to get us moving up the pitch quicker. The problem with playing out isn't Russ, he's just doing what he's been asked. To start with, the 2 centre backs don't look massively comfortable but quite often nobody is showing for the ball and it quite often results in dodgy balls being pinged back to Russ who will then try again, before once again there's no option and we just end up going long anyway. Gaz or Glendon have got to be more clever at losing their marker and showing for the ball, and then in the next phase you need to have Jacko or Waters/Duds out wide ready to take it from then. Playing out the back requires buy in from the whole team, and either they just aren't comfortable in doing it or they just aren't good enough to do it. The best example of a Chester team playing from the back was when Worsnop would kick it out to Matty Brown or Charnock, and Kingsley (back when he was good) would happily take the ball and look to quickly distribute out wide. Granted, there were times where we lacked a plan B that season but when it worked we played some great stuff. Currently, we look a bit like Arsenal playing out the back......uncomfortable centre backs laying it off to Xhaka who takes about 10 touches before popping it off and inviting pressure on the back line.

I bow to your superior knowledge SB but with pessimistic fans like him who needs opposition? It’s a prediction thread. I thought that would be the score, it wasn’t, I’m glad. That ok? It's not a prediction thread but a discussion thread per game. If it was a prediction thread then Mr Pessimist fucked up yet again. 2 losses all season? Get behind the lads you goat 😁
