On the back of two miserable journeys over the Pennines we return to the Deva tomorrow as we host Blyth Spartans at home where we look to put our defensive troubles behind us. We have simply not been good enough in that department lately, so hopefully we have worked on set pieces in training in order for us to put things right. At home we show no fear as we score goals for fun and make the 1885 Arena a fortress, but our away form has stalled of late which is why we are in the position that we are in. We can’t afford to turn up to tomorrow’s game thinking that we are going to walk it, because you only have to look at the Curzon Ashton game to see what happened there.
Our last match was on Saturday as we lost 4-2 away at York City in what was a very action-packed encounter. The first half was entertaining to an extent, but for us it wasn’t as much because a series of defensive frailties saw us have a mountain to climb. We got off to an awful start as towards the 10th minute Sean Newton headed in from a corner to make it 1-0 to York City. However, at the other end we got an immediate response as Jamie Morgan slotted into the far corner for us to make it 1-1. The hosts were having none of it though, as Kieran Green powered in a header to make it 2-1 to York City, following our comical attempt of clearing the ball away. Moments later York City almost got a third as Jordan Burrow tapped in, but thankfully it was disallowed for offside. Before the interval though we were dealt another blow as Kurt Willoughby poked in to make it 3-1 to York City. Meanwhile, the second period was less eventful, but we still couldn’t keep the goals out as our opponents continued their dominance. George Glendon gave us a fighting chance by smashing in to make it 3-2, although our faint hopes disappeared as Kurt Willoughby headed in to make it 4-2 to York City. Our bad afternoon continued as Jamie Morgan got sent off for us due to picking up his second yellow card. Our chances of making another fightback faded away as we deservedly got beat.
Blyth Spartans will be making the trip from Northumberland having endured a woeful season so far. The Spartans have spent the majority of it in the relegation zone - having lost manager Alun Armstrong and a number of their players who achieved a play-off finish last season. Former Birmingham City and Blackpool boss Lee Clark has been in the hot seat at Croft Park since June, but even his EFL experience hasn’t been able to help Blyth - who were dealt an even bigger blow as their best player, Callum Roberts, signed for Notts County last month. Only three points separate tomorrow’s opponents from out-of-form Gloucester City so anything could happen in the relegation battle, but Blyth will have to turn on the style to avoid a return to step 7.
We recorded our first back-to-back defeat of the season last Saturday, so it is vital that we don’t continue our sticky run of form. The play-offs are so tight now with the likes of Boston United, Altrincham, and Spennymoor Town all on red hot form, so if we want to keep our place in the top 7 then we must replicate the form of the above. Our strikers need to step up too as we have hit blanks in three of our last five, so they must be firing on all cylinders as the goals have dried up a bit of late. Come On City!
Score: Chester FC (Asante, Glendon, G.Roberts) 3-1 Blyth Spartans (Fenwick)
Attendance: 1,817 (56 Blyth Spartans)
My predicted lineup: Griffiths K.Roberts Livesey Grand Taylor Jackson G.Roberts Glendon Johnston Dudley Asante
COYB!

Chester 2-0 Blyth. Johnston and Asante. Att 1,874 with 49 Blyth. Really need the three points to maintain the slight cushion we have on 8th place. Blyth will likely turn up looking for a 0-0 and so we'd be doing ourselves a huge favour if we could make that early break through. Our next 4 home games after Blyth are against sides currently in the top 7, can't afford any slip ups tomorrow.

I was having a look at previous seasons, and third place has tended to finish with somewhere in the 75-80 point region. We're currently on 48, so realisitically we might need to win 10 or 11 of our last 14 games to finish in the top three.
Means a slip-up tomorrow isn't really an option, doesn't it? I think we'll get a narrow win.

On paper our easiest game for a while/a must win. But they will park the bus and try and do a Curzon on us. So we will need exactly what we’ve been lacking recently - a cutting edge in the final third and for forwards to take their chances 🤞

But the management have gone public with the "no excuses" line Ever the optimist, we'll get an early goal and ease to a 4-0 win! Weather could play a part though!

I thought Elton looked quite lively/creative at York before he was subbed off when we changed formation. I’d be tempted to start with him and see how he does whilst resting others (on the bench) that we’ll need in the harder games to come.

Deserve to be 1 up at HT. We've had the chances to increase our lead as well. These are by no means out of it though and wind is certainly picking up now.

A win is a win but that was dreadful. More negatives than positives for me. Thought Jones did okay and scored a nice goal. Not really much else to say. Building for the future and all that.

Am a bit worried about John Johnston. Reminded me of Jordan chapell today - lost the ball all the time, had loads of chances to impress, ran into dead ends, gave us no width and welched on loads of tackles.
