Time to sort the problem out as our present custodian very much like last seasons apart from being inconsistent makes his defence hesitant as they have no confidence in him , I accept we wont be able to change this situation for the remainder of the present campaign but it must be our priority close season

Completely agree, had enough of this guy.
Been struggling for a few months I think, some games he has little to do so and still let’s goals in. York game tipped it for me, terrible performance.
Can’t recall a game where he has saved us and won a man of the match, you need that if you are going to go up.

First goal he (Griffiths) spills a daisy cutter and the second welded to his line when he could claim it. See those type of corners gobbled up every week apart from at the Deva in which it’s panic stations because you just know he won’t impose himself. The second was a carbon copy of goals recently conceded at Gateshead and Royston. I’m sure the third was also similar to the Leamington third goal in which he fails to collect and communicate with Waters. It will cost Chester massively I’m afraid.

The club doesn’t have a goalkeeping coach so how is he supposed to improve? He’s 23 which in goalkeeping terms is very very young. Not sticking up for him by no means but the club leave him hanging out to dry

Same from corners if the keeper is not going to come for the ball he needs to shout “Away” then defenders know they have to deal with the situation, it only takes a second of doubt to make the difference between a clearance and a goal.

After the York game I defended our keeper and thought he was an improvement on some of our resent keepers but yesterday his performance was poor, with that said he was not on his own. The first goal was a fumble as he failed to hold onto the ball, the third goal was down to Waters, the situation was fairly simple to resolve and we dropped a hard earned point for the sake on a corner.
What I did find frustrating was the fact the keeper insisted of kicking the ball up the pitch when Asante had come off rather than roll it out to the defence or midfield. He also fails to get the ball away and we miss the opportunity of a brake.

Can’t recall a game where he has saved us and won a man of the match, you need that if you are going to go up. Brackley and Kings Lynn away, won us the game and rightly got MOTM both games. Agree we need a big investment on a new keeper in the summer though. Russ may be 23 but there will be teenagers with more senior experience than him. That’s okay if you’re a mid table side perhaps and happy to accept mistakes to watch him grow, but at Chester for this level, high expectations, high crowds, high standards... I don’t think it works.

I just don't think the managers see the goalkeeper position as a priority. Shenton was awful last season and one of the priorities in the summer should have been a decent keeper. We waited until pre-season when Russ came in on trial and it seemed that the managers took a he will do approach. They persevered with Shenton last season and have done with Griffths this season. I'm all for standing by your keeper as one mistake can be decisive with with both keepers we've had under these two the keepers have cost us game after game with basic errors. Do the managers see the importance in a goalkeeping coach? They seem more obsessed with trying to sign lightweight wingers who offer nothing more than what we have already.

The thing that frustrates me that he is prepared to run up the pitch in the last minute to try and create a Jimmy Glass moment or for a free kick taking. But when it comes down to the basics of moving off his line ?! He is literally static.
I know he's only 23 but if he's still not prepared to come off his line now, he will never do it.
When David De Gea first came to the Premier League he always came to catch the ball and he got beaten to the ball or clattered into. But over time he improved his game and dealt better with it.
Personally I would recall Theo Roberts, as it's pointless having him on the books if were not even going to test him at this level.

Griffiths is better than Shenton (albeit that's not saying much) but if we are going down the route of having just one keeper at the club then IMO it has to be an experienced one. The main issue with Griffiths appears to be lack of communication.

Not as if he’s a rookie 17 year old

Big decision for the lads to make on Griffiths. I don't like chopping and changing goalkeepers, think you should stick with one unless he's regularly costing you points, but Griffiths possibly is at that point now.

A good keeper would have been more value to this team than Johnson and Elton.

Not excusing Russ from yesterdays horror show, but we have conceded 12 goals from the last 5 games (24 in the previous 26 league games) and I certainly wouldn't pin every one of those on him. Set pieces (esp corners) have been an Achilles heel for us all season so would look at the Defence being equally culpable for a number of goals conceded. In his post match interview Honest Jon(no) continued to scratch his head and shrug his shoulders at both the Goalkeeper and conceding at set pieces, maybe stop playing "who's arm is it?" and sort out the problems on the training pitch! On a positive note our Defenders have been responsible for 5 of our last 8 goals scored. Maybe switch our attack and defence around. In answer to the OP, despite having (allegedly) the best wing back and right winger in this league, midfielder and centre forward who are League class we cannot stamp ourselves on this crap league and, in the unlikely event that we do get promoted, would struggle like hell in the league above.

In times where we’re told keepers at this level are very much alike and basically poor, the very least we can expect from a player we are paying a wage to is that he does the basics of communicating and taking charge of their penalty area. I’m not asking or expecting a keeper who sprints off his line like usain bolt or pulls off world class top bins saves every week. I see 11 year old kids in the Wirral league barking orders to their defenders. For gods sake it’s basics!

It's definitely becoming more of a concern.
It's the amount of times we gift goals that is so frustrating. We scored 2 (and should have had more) against the tighest defence in the league. Once you put 2 past Brackley, you've done the hard bit! But all 3 of their goals are so avoidable. I'd have to say Russ is culpable for all 3 of those yesterday. He's got the attributes to be a cracking keeper, but he's too nice. We need him to be on the front foot and have a bit of conviction, but he's very reluctant to leave his line and it's costing us.
The 3rd goal in particular is very hard to watch. I don't think Waters' comes out of it smelling of roses either, but it's exactly the sort of goal that we NEVER get gifted by opponents.

Griffiths is big enough, but is far too reluctant to come off his line. He's been a liability all season. But fair does to Brackley, they were in our faces from the off and looked a very effective outfit.

A lot of us could see from the start of the season that Griffiths was not going to be good enough for a team hoping to get promotion, so why couldn’t the managers see it.

I’ve just seen the third goal waters should just deal with it a point at home against them wouldn’t of been the worst result in the world. What an earth is he doing it’s almost zubizaretta stuff for those of us old enough to remember . Seriously don’t like having a go and yes he’s a young lad in terms of keepers. That though what he’s done there is not excusable. Needs to go ASAP that said I’ve not seen a decent keeper in this league because they done exist

If at 23 he has not commanded the communication with his defense then it isn’t going to change now. Matty Waters has seen enough of the keepers performances and should have taken charge and conceded a corner. I have seen many poor keepers over the years but unfortunately this current keeper is one of the worst, would even say not as good as Shenton, he had more clean sheets at this stage of the season. Having played in a defensive position the goalkeeper can make or break any defence, if we do not replace him then Conference North again next season. If we do replace then there could be a chance in the play offs.

Very sad I know, have been through all the highlights and make it 8 goals conceded in the league from corners but to be fair the Defending leaves a lot to be desired and more culpable for most than the GK. That said there are some right howlers from Russ in open play. Incidentally feels like deja vu reading some of the early season comments about some of our performances.
