We begin an important week tomorrow night as we entertain Tranmere Rovers at home in the Cheshire Senior Cup Quarter Final where the winners will face Hyde United at home. With Saturday’s game against Gateshead going under we have had extra rest ahead of this one, although I doubt we will field a strong team. Tranmere will most probably put out a reserve side so it will be interesting to see how this one fares.
Our last match was a week on Saturday ago as we lost 3-2 against Brackley Town at home in what was a meagre encounter. We failed to turn up in the first period as we were sluggish, had a lack of energy, and were really sloppy in our play. It came to no surprise to see Brackley Town make it 1-0 before the interval, as Dan Holman stabbed in from a Russ Griffiths parry. To be honest we improved for a short while in the second half, and we deservedly got onto level terms as James Jones tapped in for us to make it 1-1. That goal came from a corner, and moments later the visitors netted from another corner as Thierry Audel scored a free header to make it 2-1 to Brackley Town. With not long left on the clock we got another equaliser, as Danny Livesey looped a header home for us to make it 2-2 thanks for the wind. Just as we thought we got a decent point, Brackley Town made it 3-2 in injury time as Matt Lowe slid in following poor communication between Russ Griffiths and Matty Waters. A second consecutive home game decided in the nick of time, with us on the sour side after a huge high a few days before that.
Tranmere Rovers ply their trade in Sky Bet League One and will be making the venture from Merseyside having had a very difficult season. They look destined for relegation back to Sky Bet League Two as they sit seven points adrift of Rochdale, whilst a dreadful playing surface certainly hasn’t helped them either. Manager Micky Mellon did an excellent job in securing back-to-back promotions, although League One has seemed to be a bridge too far as Tranmere were expected to be more competitive.
A nice blend of youth and seniors have helped us towards the last eight so far, so I would expect us to take a similar approach tomorrow ahead of a crucial game on Saturday. The likes of Jamie Morgan and Gary Stopforth may get some minutes under their belt as they have missed a chunk of game time lately. This competition doesn’t have much significance for us, although it would be nice to get that winning feeling back following our poor show against Brackley Town. Come On You Blues!
Score: Chester FC (Hughes, Morgan) 2-1 Tranmere Rovers (Thompson)
Attendance: 426 (62 Tranmere Rovers)
My predicted lineup:
Gray
Morgan Jones Macready Waters
Burton Stopforth Hayes
Crilly
Hughes Elliott
COYB!
