What do you propose is done to stop this? Bring back free universal testing; require people with Covid to self-isolate and provide decent sick pay; face masks in public spaces; employers considering Covid19 in their statutory H & S risk assessments; increased promotion of vaccinations, especially for young people and booster jabs for over 60s. Just spitballing here but 188,000 U.K. Covid deaths and 1000 in the past 48 hours shows the Tories crowing about beating the pandemic is just their usual bullshit. You can, incidentally, still get a free testing kit sent to you if you just say you're an NHS priority person. They don't check. It is lying, and it does mean people with genuine needs could miss out. But then the government doesn't seem to have any qualms with either of those concepts so perhaps that's one way to make the point back to them.

Am I being cynical by wondering about this being announced while parliament is in recess? I predict an upcoming week of vague stories about the Queen, grammar schools, the McCanns and other traditional distractions. Sure enough, we've got the so-called "Duke of Disillusion" all over the front pages, and some German bloke who's already got a host of offences against his name being named a Madeleine suspect. Just over a week before too much time has passed to officially name someone a suspect in the case, oddly enough. Like there's nothing else to talk about.

Seems Starmer has been a clown with lockdown breaches as well, and handed the Tories an easy get out clause.
Interesting that the Daily Mail has been insisting for the last few weeks that nobody cares about Partygate, so I'm curious as to why they're exposing stories nobody cares about.

I think it's a smart move, Starmer saying he'll resign if he gets fined. You could replace him with another Labour frontbencher and I doubt it loses any votes. At the same time it makes Boris Johnson look bad and probably forces him to resign too. I don't think anyone would vote Labour solely because Keir Starmer is in charge, but I bet there's a big group of people who voted Tory solely because it was Boris Johnson in charge.

Making personal integrity a central pillar of your politics because you have nothing to say on any real issue is a risky strategy when you don’t have any personal integrity.

For 54 of his own MPs to call for a vote of no confidence in him, that really should be the end for Boris Johnson. It shouldn't have to go through the process of a vote, which he'll obviously win. He should resign.
He won't though because a) you can't make someone's position untenable if it was never tenable in the first place and b) he has no shame, dignity or morals.
