Fair enough. Similarly I don't think we would have won the Conference in 2004 if Wayne Brown hadn't been injured because that last 14 games we were nip and tuck with Hereford right down to the Shrewsbury (a) game although the Scarborough game was tougher than expected. I felt there was always a mistake in Wayne. Remember the hair he had when he arrived? People seem to forget that his replacement Iain Turner dropped some absolute clangers before playing out of his skin at Shrewsbury. There were serious calls to replace him with Northwich journeyman keeper Andy Woods. Similarly I'm always amazed at the lack of respect for Danby, penalty saving record aside he was a solid if average keeper that didnt drop many clangers

Him and Brown are the only keepers we've really had for any length of time in the past 20 years, and both were pretty reliable I thought. Both had respectable careers in the game.

Think people just liked Danby because he was here for ages. He wouldn't be anywhere near my top five keepers since my time watching from early/mid-90s. Might just get into my top ten.

In his prime, he was decent enough at League 2 level. How we would long for that calibre of keeper now.

Danby was a good keeper. You don't survive for that long otherwise. There's one person on here with some sort of agenda ...I suspect Danby pinched his girlfriend at Cruise or something 😏

Funny you should say that though, I remember celebrating my birthday in Cruise the night we won our debut title at Garforth and all the players were in the VIP area necking back the bubbly as you would expect - of course we all mingled and I'm sure one or two of them tried it on with my now-wife and her mate.

Back in the day I did a few player interviews for the OWS. Asked Danby about his reputation for having a Cruise season ticket and didn't deny it, although claimed he was now a family man! Top bloke. Might try and dig out a few of them and post as it's so quiet on here.

I went to a good few of those final 14 games (I was still a wage slave) and he didn't drop any clangers in the games I saw. When we all trekked down to Hereford for the victory party I remember thinking thank God that Wayne got injured.

Saw him quite often in Aldi as well, quite near to where he did his gym stuff. Always had time to chat as well.

I remember several, including fumbling a corner into his own net against Aldershot and letting Stewart Drummond's punt bounce over him against Morecambe. His debut (v Farnborough?) wasn't too convincing either.
He was young to be fair, so nothing that wasn't expected, but I think people forget what his spell here was actually like due to that Shrewsbury game when he played a blinder.

All hypothetical but feel confident that we would have still won the league in 2003-04 if Wayne Brown hadn’t got injured. Although not faultless, he’d matured as a goalkeeper since making some rather rash charges out of his goal in his early days and was now regularly picked for England’s non-league team. The superb save he made from Jim Bentley in the last minute in the 1-0 win at Morecambe that season was as vital as it was impressive. Worth noting that Brown also went on to twice win promotion with Hereford.
Don’t forget that Brown’s injury initially led to Ian McCaldon keeping goal until he decided mid-season he had better things to do with his life than play Conference football. I had far less confidence in him than Brown or Turner and our record when he played was almost certainly poorer than with the other two that season.
