Some day that. Weatherspoons was packed that day after the game and bouncing. Great memories.

That was the first home game I missed that season. Although me and the missus arrived at 2.00 we never got in.

Jesus, that long. Chose that season, of all the crap I could have missed, to go backpacking. Was in Laos, in an Internet cafe in a seriously scary thunder storm, constantly refreshing the score. Got a few funny looks, punching the air when the final whistle went. Huge regret to have missed that day, having suffered the Doncaster defeat on penalties in the previous season play offs

The funny thing is Stamp should've been suspended that day for kicking an Exeter player in the back a couple of games before. Given the game was on Sky and the cameras clearly picked the incident up, I'm not how he got away with it!

We didn't have a great view of the kick at the time but once we saw the game back it was obvious how lucky he was. I think Wright had a quiet word in his ear a short time later to calm him down. It was a great season though, I know some say its all tainted by what followed but at the time it was really special - and for me at least that's the main thing.

I’m approaching middle age now and that was the only bit of success I ever saw oldco have. We had some great players in those years and the wheels began to fall off only a couple of months later. I seem to recall being in queensferry sports the day before travelling to Notts County away, and finding out that Mark Wright had left. It was a surreal experience as I’d embarked up the coast on the bus to get my new shirt, took me most of the day to get there and back.

Would’ve been good for the official Twitter account to have “live tweeted” this game yesterday to fill another blank Saturday. Needs to be some sort of original thought going into the social media operations at the moment.

Vaughan made it out to be to do with the incident with Hatswell's missus, which seemed pretty ridiculous a year on and well after Haswell had left us, but a lot of fans bought it. The understanding seemed to be that it was really about Wright not being happy with SVJ being in the team, although if so it seems odd that he came back twice and not only played SVJ but made him captain. In hindsight, we really should have been pressuring Vaughan out as soon as his useless kids started playing. I think deep down we all knew it was only going to go downhill from there.

Was a strange one. I’d guess that having just achieved promotion, Wright probably felt in a strong position to go and get another job elsewhere if you are right about not wanting to play Vaughan’s kids. Later on he probably needed a job to try and save his career. As for the fans, we signed so many that were sold as having premier league potential, giving them time to develop. Also feeling indebted to Vaughan and knowing how bad it would get if he stopped putting money in. I seem to remember the various fans groups at the time being like the different anti-Roman groups from the life of Brian also.

I haven't watched the footage from the playoff's. I had asked the club access to dressing rooms before games to make a fly on the wall film bur Wright said it could put the players off. Shame.

From memory it was Dave Cameron who missed the last penalty. Their keeper, again from memory Andy Warrington, also pulled off an absolute worldie from a Cameron header late on. Amazing atmosphere that day...best I've seen at the Deva.

My memory is playing tricks on me. Did we have another game after Scarborough? I've always remembered it as last game of the season but looking at the table on Sky Sports I'm thinking not.

Aye we needed four points from our last three games - Shrewsbury away, Scarborough at home and Hereford away. I don’t think any of us believed we would get a result at Hereford and actually we basically won the title at Gay Meadow IMO. Scenes at the end of a goalless draw.

Yeah the last thing anyone wanted was to go to Hereford needing something, I think they won something like their last 10 games including that 9-1 hammering of Dagenham broadcast on Sky.
As for the Shrews game, we went in to that without deadly Daryl Clare and the nerves on the away terrace increased once that news started to spread. Our record at the old Gay Meadow was pretty dire I think but that night the lads did it.
The Wayne Brown testimonial that took place shortly after the Hereford game was made particularly special after the way the season had finished. We were back, after four years out - it felt like an eternity!

Darryn stamp a man who never quite got the credit he deserved still I think played in the last chester team who had 2 20 goal a season strikers and a great foil for Claire as well
