Before anyone asks, Theo Roberts has been given a short term contract, to end of June, along with the rest of the squad.

An experienced goalkeeper must be a priority for next season. Griffiths was an improvement on Shenton but lost his way as the season progressed. It's such a key position but seems to have been a blind spot over the past few seasons. Any suggestions?

I'd prefer to go down the Glennon type route....a mid to late 30s keeper with league experience now looking to drop down. The young guys seem to have a habit of having dips and need to be taken out of the firing line, which is understandable, but not a gamble we should be taking. Maybe it's the physicality but there also seems to be a reluctance to command the area, which spreads uncertainty throughout the defence. That was definitely an issue with Griffiths. When the ball is being pumped into the box late in the game, defending a 1-0 lead, there's nothing like seeing the keeper come to claim a cross or clattering the number nine rather than it pinging around.

Adam Collin was an option, but it’s looking out of our price range.

Wouldn't be surprised if Griffiths does well somewhere else. Shame really, but he just made too many basic errors.

Two seasons of Morley and Johnson, and two seasons of poor goalkeeping with zero improvement. Coincidence or useless coaching? Discuss.

I don't really think it's anything to do with coaching. I just think we've struggled with the position over the last two years, and even further back arguably. In the last 10 years, Danby is probably the only solid long-term keeper we've had. Ones like Glennon and Liam Roberts have impressed but were only on loan and playing below their level. Keepers generally seem a bit dodgy at this level, which makes me think if you're going to spend money anyway, maybe that should be the position.

Anyone would think Glennon was Gordan Banks by the amount of lip service he gets on here. He only played a handful of games. Goalkeepers are generally poor at this level, I genuinely can't remember too many good ones playing against us, particularly in the Conference North. Of course, we can always strive to improve that position but the mistake ratio will always be higher at this level, as it is with the outfield players. It's a shame it didn't work out with Russ as I felt like he had a lot of the core attributes to be a really good keeper, but he seemed to lack the confidence or aggression to dominate his area the way a fella his size should - maybe that will come in time. The best keepers we've had in recent times were Danby, Sam Hornby and Liam Roberts.

I am open to being proved wrong but in my support of ChesterFC , which goes back activly to 1963 , I dont think we have ever sold a goalkeeper for cash, every other position but that. The best keepers we have had have normally been on loan i.e. Stowell. So for whatever reason it is often a position we have struggled with. Millington and Stewart being two of the possible exceptions.

Expected. One boring, boring man. Same old shit. Takes an arsehole to be knowledgeable about shit. Do you have to be so bloody negative all the time? You’re clearly a very knowledgeable CFC supporter who at times can add to some very good debate but most of the time you come across as a wind up merchant/negative bugger/confrontational. I know you’re not bothered and you’ll probably have a witty retort for me but try to post something a bit more positive and I’m sure more people will engage with your posts.

Sadly, it rarely works that way. My recent post offered no personal opinion, merely inviting the thoughts of others in regard to goalkeeping issues these two years. As expected, the usual two muppets on here are programmed to attack anyone who writes anything other than expressions of love and devotion towards all employees. I’ve seen the numerous U-turns that have been made since we reformed, after the love-ins with the likes of McCarthy, Maguire, Bignot, and more recently Uncle Stuart.

There have, of course, been keepers who have excelled, as mentioned above, but I don’t recall fans feeling let down by keepers until only recently, so I feel it is a relatively new issue. Starting again, in 2010, I was very happy with Richard Whiteside, and quite elated at getting Danby back. Shorter term keepers have been very good too, such as Matt Glennon, Tony Thomson, John Visconi, and Freddy Hall. My first disappointed was Jon Worsnop, initially because of Burr getting him in to oust Danby, but generally his failure to command his box. Nicknamed ‘worst drop’ for a reason. Haven’t liked Shenton or Griffiths either, and particularly the failure to have active back ups for either, and noting neither developed in their time here.

Didn't rate Whiteside but we had such a strong team we got away with it. I would add Felgate the list of good keepers we've had. Great character too. Remember him taking his imaginary dog for a walk round the 18 yard box one game when we were so much on top he had nothing to do.

Don't forget that Glennon never came off his line either. We took advantage of that against Halifax a couple of times, when we played them. Good shot stopper though.

Some good points raised, suggesting mainly that the goalkeeping issue is a recent problem. When I first started following the blues, Keith Griffiths, Brian Biggins and Ron Howells were the keepers. Although Reeves and Millington are standouts, I also thought that the former Wrexham shot stopper Brian Lloyd was more than able.

I just think he wasn't really the right keeper at this particular time. Not saying coaching isn't a factor. Ideally, we'd have a goalkeeping coach but it all comes down to what we can afford.

I think the experienced route is the way to go. It may cost more of the budget but the last two seasons have been beyond bad from a keeper point of view.

I think the experienced route is the way to go. It may cost more of the budget but the last two seasons have been beyond bad from a keeper point of view. To be fair to Griffiths, he looked decent most of the time. Away at Brackley in both games in filthy weather he was excellent. Unfortunately he made a few mistakes and he he needed to be dropped for a game or two. For some reason we didn't really have anyone to challenge him, so he stayed in the team and lost confidence. Keepers tend to mature late, so think he will do OK. Shenton on the other hand looked like he'd been pulled out of Sunday league. I assume it's down to budget that the managers decided to effectively risk going with one keeper, rather than have a proper back up twiddling his thumbs. Arguably that strategy has cost us in the last two seasons.
