The point, therefore, is Callum Mac is failing to develop players up to a level where they are good enough to cut the mustard at NLN level. I’m sure CM is a nice guy, works his socks off etc etc but he obviously doesn’t have the ability of a first-class youth/academy coach. What an embarrassing comment

I can’t see future stars in the mould of Salah, Messi, Pogba, Kane, Sterling etc. turning down scholarships at top flight British or European clubs, preferring to come to a sixth tier club and be coached by a Frank Sidebottom lookalike, even though he has consistently produced very good teams from the scraps left for non-league clubs to choose from. He clearly has ability.

Much has been made about Calum Mac’s young guns but the dynamic duo don’t have a very good record of turning former youth team stars into first-team regulars. If I was Iwan Murray, I’d be desperately disappointed at having to make the move to Runcorn in order to progress my career. Of all the ex Youth players that we've released over the years, how many are actually playing at NLN or above? Genuìne question. I don't know the answer, but I'm sure deva chatters will. Tom Peers eventually made it with Alty 3 years after he left us. Are there any others consistently playing at this level? Two years ago I'd have put money on Noble being in the first team by now. Unfortunately I'm not sure he developed in that time. I've only seen him in Cheshire Cup games this season, but he doesn't seem to get on the ball enough. The game goes on around him, and he tackles well, but doesn't affect the game. It is a discussion point that maybe two of Murray, Noble, McCready and Crilly would be options as subs. Wouldn't disagree with that argument. But how much would they improve sat on the bench? How many young players are there playing in NL and NLN? Not many at all. It's the physicality of British football that hinders their development. Interview with Steve Nichol, Head of Youth Development at Halifax - "I don't think players are ready for our first-team when they leave us aged 18 if I'm honest. We've tried various approaches to bridge that gap, including a hybrid approach where we've retained players on a contract and they'll train with the first-team and go out on loan to get some experience." Nichol's own research indicates that only six academy players over the last 18 months have established themselves in the first-team at National League clubs. www.halifaxcourier.co.uk/sport/football/fc-halifax-town-shaymen-hoping-inspire-next-generation-first-team-996568

Callum has produced players capable of playing, at NLN level or above. James Jones, Tom Crawford and Sam Hughes are proof of that and he does have the ability of a first class coach, as he is now manager of Runcorn Linnets. (Who have spotted his potential) Try doing some football coaching at whatever level and see how easy it is? Lol The main problem is that the gap between youth team level and the first team, is massive and even the most promising will need an extended spell, on loan to get used to the semi pro game.

Absolutely agree. Thought the lad had serious potential, just needed a run of games. Could and should have been our box to box midfielder who could weigh in with his share of goals. In a midfield of sameness it's a shame Cain never had the opportunities to prove his ability. Hope we don't live to regret this one.

Unless I'm mistaken, Noble has chosen to further his education at Loughborough University, whilst at the same time continuing to play football at a decent level via their football team.

Seems to be a common thing that the home grown young players are not getting any chances under the current management they would rather have older players, The way the club should go is give the youth a chance if they play a bad game they are dropped yet the older players get chance after chance, not sign any players over the age of 28 then we have a chance of selling them on, at the moment with loads of players being released we should release any older players that are not under contract

I've hardly seen any young players in the opposition teams last few seasons either. AVFO posted a quote from the Halifax coach, which was something along the lines of the leagues are too physical for young players to develop. From memory quoting something like (6??) players from youth set ups in 3 seasons across the 24 clubs. I don't actually think we've released anyone who's since gone on to a higher level. I get your point but in the main the young players have dipped after a few games, and needed a break. Given our level and hybrid approach we will tend to have a mix of older and younger players. The young players will learn as much from playing with the likes of Livesey, who's had a long football league career, than they will from our youth set up. They'll watch how the train and are in the dressing room. Unfortunately if we give youth too much of a chance, as you suggest, we'll likely never get out of this league. It's a difficult balance to make. I would like to see a couple of younger lads given chances. Goodwin and Crilly might get the chance this season, along with Marsh-Hughes if he can stay fit.

I agree with avfo- I think he has chosen academic study with prospects when his football career is over. He may also further develop his football skills at Loughborough

Sorry that Cain Noble wasn’t given more of a chance. Of all the youngsters, I thought he was the one who would have broken through and made it at this level .

Noble has chosen to study at Loughborough while still playing football. His decision makes sense when you consider that a football playing career ends between the age of 35 and 37, except in extreme circumstances. Good luck to the lad, he’s obviously got a sensible head on his shoulders.

Noble seems to have made a very sensible decision.
He can get a degree education to help him in his future careers, and can play football while he does that.
Two years ago I'd have put money on him making it into our first team every week. Not sure he's progressed though. He times his runs into the box really well, but doesn't get involved in the game much otherwise. In three years he'll have a degree, hopefully, and can maybe come back.

I was sure I read that Jamie Morgan was signed up till the end of next season, is that not correct? I believe there is a clause in his contract allowing us to extend it for an additional year. Out of the players yet to sign, i'd want: Morgan (with the option) Grand Waters (if a good value contract) + as a winger (in front of Joel Taylor) Waring Dudley Elliott (maybe/if no alternative) That then leaves a gaping whole in the midfield with no Burton, Roberts or Stopforth. If there's no good alternative midfield option i'd be tempted to re-sign Burton, mostly for defensive midfield cover and leadership which the managers clearly value.

Really sorry to see Cain Noble leave, He played well for the teams he went out on loan too. Felt he should have been given more of a chance and for me was certainly a better bet than Elton Nagwatala. I just hope Will Goodwin gets more game time and patience and Lloyd Marsh Hughes starts to play to his potential and to put his injury problems behind him.

Really want LMH to get some time this year, it's difficult to blood young players in (look at how long it's taken Matty Waters to move up) but every manager, coach and scout has talked up his potential and it would be fantastic to see him injury free for a season and get going for us and I really hope he can stay fit.
Also if he's got the legs which I believe he has given he's played every minute last season Grand is a shoe in for me, full effort, full passion, great passing range, great goal threat, Aerial prowess, awareness and very reliable, people we're split on Ryan Astles but you need warriors like that at this level in my Opinion and Grand is above all else that. Don't see why people always say we need speed at CB look at the highlights going back to Astles and Grand, we're very rarely caught out for pace at the back and goals from CB are vital. Most goals we've conceded this year are from lack of concentration which his how half the goals at this level are scored and conceded, which is why it's NLN.

I wish the lad well for his future and hope you get your degree and enjoy your football, make us proud Cain

UTFS We must have been watching a different player if you think Grand is a good passer of the ball. I think his distribution is generally poor, plus he's prone to lapses of concentration. Had Gray not got him out of jail for the back pass on Sunday he would be getting slated on here. Great attitude etc but if we are to kick on we have to look elsewhere given his age.

Despite falling a little short this has been the strongest, most balanced squad we’ve had in years (not saying much I know).
Need to hope to build on this. It’s a shame to see some of the younger lads moving on after not getting a decent run.

I would say the lad has a head on his shoulders and is moving on and progressing his career and securing a future for himself. If this is what CM and the club has taught and instilled in our younger players then I am very proud of my club because there is life after football.

Centre midfielder Louis Hayes joined Runcorn Linnets on a season-long loan today after impressing on trial. This will be a good move for the lad as Calum McIntyre will obviously know his style of play very well, whilst he needs to be playing regularly in order to come back here stronger and progress. Louis has impressed for The Linnets in pre-season while being on trial, and will be able to take part in their home friendly against Vauxhall Motors tomorrow. Good luck Louis.

Centre midfielder Stuart Crilly also joined Runcorn Linnets on a season-long loan today after impressing on trial. The Linnets will be receiving another bright talent nurtured by Calum McIntyre as he is a similar player to Louis Hayes - with them both being very energetic and creative centre mids. I was particularly impressed with Stuart when he played for us in the blue side of Runcorn in October, as he gained two assists in our 7-0 demolition of Runcorn Town. Good luck Stuart.
