When they asked Johno after the match about the error he brushed it aside and refered to the great save he made earlier, sounds to me like he’s coming.Watch this space.

Dorking Wanderers formed 1999 beat my local club today, Bath City. Not surprised. Heard manager talking at the start of the season. Bright and refreshing attitude. It is depressing to see us having to accept our lowly state and listen to fans accepting it. I don’t think that getting to the play offs and raising over £100k for the playing budget for next season to go further is accepting of our current league position. Comments on here suggest it is. There seems to be an acceptance of our current position. We ripped this league apart a few years ago with a manager that seemed to have a natural, simple method. Chose the right players and got the best of them on a pretty basic budget. It all seems laboured and complex now, both on the pitch and at management level. Expectations aren't high enough. Fans are committed and generous and deserve better.

We go again next season
Sad to see some of the players were in tears after the game saying they let the club down
No one has let us down we are proud of them players who gave it everything for our wonderful club

Scott Burton one of the worst players ever to wear a chester shirt I've never seen him have a good game only here due being friends with the management yet still captain that's what baffles me

He’s the bloody captain.

I think that if you watch the first goal it was Brad Jackson losing the ball by coming inside.

I am not that disappointed as being a Chester fan for many years you expect these things to happen, the first half was no better than a pre season friendly and Alty had the jump on us on that as our powers at be delayed and delayed if we would take part or not. As for the sending off what load off b0llocks that was, all game the ball bounced around more than my 2 year old grandson and that's saying something and things only changed when the subs came on thank god. You know what it is what it is lets move on onwards and upwards COYB.

Scott Burton one of the worst players ever to wear a chester shirt I've never seen him have a good game only here due being friends with the management yet still captain that's what baffles me I’ve certainly seen him have good games, like virtually everyone else he impressed in the 4-1 win over Hereford and other games around that time when we looked capable of challenging for the title. However, for the most part it just hasn’t worked out at all and it seems to be a recurring pattern with players signed in midfield in recent years (Danny Harrison and Luke George just two previous examples).

It also seems a common theme that we name a captain who doesn't perform or is always injured. George, McCombe, Sharps, even Horan in our first season in the NL. I often think you're best off just making your best player or first name on the team sheet captain, which is probably one of the two centre halfs.

Anyone else thought that if we'd beaten Bradford PA, instead of losing, we'd likely have finished 4th? Bear in mind we also lost to Brackley the previous week.
We would then have played Gateshead (h), Boston (a), then either York (a) or a home game in the final. Might have been a little easier. Just a thought......

Heartbreaking to lose in the manner we did due to a diabolical refereeing decision that certainly contributed towards our defeat, but regardless of that I am so proud of our squad. I’d say we performed relatively well yesterday afternoon as in the early stages of the game we looked nervy and shaky, but we soon grew into the contest and gave it a good go. Altrincham were better than us though and deservedly won in my opinion, as once they grew into the encounter they played some great football and used their extra preparation time to their advantage with their energy.
The first period was a tad below par because we started off rather slowly and were prone to being hesitant and giving the ball away a few too many times. Alty were pretty rusty too as some of their players made dodgy touches, but they had more possession than us which enabled them to rectify their errors and go at us more often. The first chance of the game did go to our opponents, and it was a big one too as Louis Gray made a brilliant first impression by palming Josh Hancock’s free kick over. Former Seal Dan Mooney went just as close to breaking the deadlock shortly after as he found the side netting, whilst our first chance of the game came at the other end as a tame Danny Elliott hit forced a simple save out of Tony Thompson. I was slightly disappointed with how we let the hosts have too much time on the ball in those early stages, as especially in the wider areas, we failed to close Alty down and apply any pressure. Things did become quite scrappy in the centre of the park as a few tasty tackles were made, but after quite a slow start, we did have a very good spell around the 15-25 minute mark where we had some great opportunities. Our best attempt of the half fell to Elliott again as he maintained his lively start by powering a header into the hands of Alty’s custodian, while John Johnston was the next to test Thompson, as he got down low to make a smart stop. George Glendon was the next to go for goal, but a hit from long range sailed well wide. Before the drinks break, we survived a major scare as Gray once again made a fantastic stop, as he tipped a Dan Mooney effort around the post following a poor Simon Grand backpass. We did tail off after that bright spell though, because it was Altrincham who took the lead to make it 1-0 as a long range Josh Hancock strike beat Louis Gray. Despite having a strong start, Gray made a bad error here as he should have easily tipped the ball around the post. We did seek to find a way back into the game before the interval though as Brad Jackson blazed over before a Simon Grand header was parried over by Thompson. We didn’t exactly set the world on fire in that half so you couldn’t really argue too much with the scoreline at half time.
Meanwhile, the second half produced plenty of action, and was a half of two halves at The Robins dominated the first part, whilst we threw everything at them in the second part. The major talking point of the game came seven minutes into the half as John Johnston brought down Dan Mooney to hand Altrincham a penalty. It was a comical decision by David McNamara, who caused division when he refereed our late defeat to Brackley Town in February, as firstly Dan Mooney was offside in the build-up, whilst he was going down before Johnston made his minimal and unintentional contact. We all know that refs in non-league (and England as a whole) are shoddy, but I think this one topped the lot off yesterday as that decision was a major turning point in the encounter. It was Elliott Durrell who dispatched the penalty to make it 2-0 to Altrincham - sending Louis Gray the wrong way. That goal effectively made it game over for us as we looked dejected and it seemed like we accepted defeat. Elliott Durrell bagged his second goal in quick succession to make it 3-0 to Altrincham, as he had plenty of space to cut inside and fire into the far corner - flying straight past Louis Gray who should have got his hands to it. It seemed like we accepted our fate, but George Glendon was having none of it as he sparked a mini revival by tapping home for us to make it 3-1. From that moment until the final kick, we were superb as we unleashed a sense of hunger to really throw everything at Alty. Our style of play was much more effective as we were much more clinical on the wings, we closed Altrincham down better, broke up the play more, and were much more creative. Credit must go to Bern and Jonno for the mass of substitutions they made, as the likes of Matty Waters, Matty Hughes, and Anthony Dudley all improved us. Waters was so close to emulating his inch-perfect free kick against Leamington, as a curler from 20 yards out just rippled the side netting. With just under 20 minutes left on the clock, we gave ourselves a huge sense of belief as Matty Hughes headed home for us to make it 3-2. It was a move off the training pitch as Matty Waters bursted down on the left flank to whip a super cross in to Hughes who planted a header in. We threw the kitchen sink at The Robins’ net, just like we did in the FA Cup Replay in September, and with minutes to spare we really should have had a penalty as Jamie Morgan was pushed down. In my view, it was just as bad as the Dan Mooney palava so the ref should have pointed to the spot - (talk about double standards!) As a result, Anthony Johnson was sent off for us for complaining about the decision. A spirited end to the game couldn’t bring that equaliser, which means a third consecutive season at this level lies ahead.
George Glendon is my man of the match for yesterday because he was really effective in the centre and got us the goal back that started our mini revival. Matty Waters definitely improved us when he came on too with his set pieces, and his assist for Matty Hughes’ header was one from the training ground. Kevin Roberts performed excellently as well, and Anthony Dudley was much better up front. Louis Gray made a couple of superb saves early doors, but he was then at fault for Altrincham’s first and should have done better for their third goal, which puts a dampener on his performance. If he does sign then we must give him a few games to settle in, so the jury is still out for me. Brad Jackson had a rare off day as he was very rusty, and he gave the ball away for the first goal after cutting inside. Finally, Scott Burton had an awful game as he was just lacklustre and barely did anything that effected the game, and he too can share some blame for the first goal by not tracking back. I agree with others that he needs to go in the Summer, and in my opinion I wouldn’t be surprised if Gary Stopforth was to go either because he was the shadow of his former self this season.
We had absolutely nothing to lose at the start of yesterday so we can bow out of the play-offs with our heads held high, particularly after the sheer amount of heart and desire we shown in the final 25 minutes. I’m not particularly keen on the ‘we go again’ phrase, but it is definitely applicable in these circumstances as this will hopefully be the start of something special, and we need to use yesterday’s pain as motivation to go the extra mile next season. There certainly won’t be a mass overhaul here, which is the correct approach as we need to be emulating what Stockport County did by keeping the majority of the squad and adding a little bit of extra quality to push us further. Regardless of what happened yesterday our squad will still go down as heroes, and we are actually fortunate to have participated in the play-offs anyway so despite us not achieving what we wanted to achieve, I am proud we gave it a good go. What we need to do now is keep pushing ‘Boost The Budget’, as the more money we receive the stronger our playing budget will be, which will mean we can sign a better calibre of players - in turn boosting our chances of promotion. There is genuine cause for optimism here so let’s keep the faith and give this league all we’ve got next season.

I don't think Alty were Any better than us despite their extra prep time. It's a shame that we will never know how the game would have turned out had 11 players stayed on the pitch. A game ruined by a card happy knob of a ref. His Decisions even made both sets of players and managers nervous.

It's easy to pick out the odd under-performing player/odd mistake (what game doesn't have those - it's NLN after all) but in the round I thought the boys did us proud yesterday in a game ruined by the Ref. You can't knock the commitment: from playing for free to almost pulling back with 2 goals in the 2nd half to being in tears in the dressing room. As long as the team are as emotionally invested in this Club as much as I am then that's not a bad place to be.
Onwards and upwards for next season, let's avoid all this heart-ache by winning the league next year - simples!

When the managers of both teams substitute all the players on a yellow card it shows they don't trust the referee to not give them a second yellow and send them off. You know when you've had a good referee for a game when you don't notice him. At this level referees seem to make it about them and struggle to keep up with the game. I think referees in general don't understand the physicality of the game as can be seen by the number of times they are conned by "clever" players who quite frankly play the officials.
Players genuinely fouled in the box and try and stay on their feet don't get penalties, more likely to get the decision if they go down. Consequently a lot go down very easily with the slightest touch. Us watching the game can see it so why don't the officials?

I'm perhaps making up my own rules here, but if a defender makes up 10 yard to tackle a striker who is one-on-one with the keeper, then unless it's a completely cynical foul, give the benefit of the doubt to the defender.
Mooney should have buried that chance. He didn't deserve to get a penalty.

If anyone cares, Gateshead won the other playoff, so it's another trip to boring Brackley next year. Think I'd like Gateshead to go up just because it's one less tedious trip to the North East. Brackley is my nearest game but the thought of going there again makes me even more depressed. Awful ground, no support, dull town. Boston and York are decent away days so hope they don't go up for purely selfish reasons. Having said that there may be no away fans anywhere next season 😭 On the positive side, it cheers me up the thought of that Brackley shithouse who celebrated his winner at the Deva by shouting and swearing at the Harry Mac feeling miserable today.

Don't know why I have done it to myself but I watched the penalty clip again today, and even more galling, imho there's half a shout for a claim of simulation by Mooney that should have got him a card. JJ can't have done more then brush past him and Mooney just goes down like a sack of spuds (and in embarrassment, knowing that his poor touch has blown the chance). Am fizzing now...but am not going to watch that clip again. As has been said, let's hope this is really good pre-season and as a result of the play-offs, the squad come back fitter and more up for it than perhaps they would have been ordinarily.

Summoned up the heart to watch the clubs highlights and the Alty TV version with different angles on youtube, and that challenge on morgan that led to Jono getting sent off is very poor, no attempt to play the ball and arms raised and clears out the man essentially off the ball. Under normal circumstance I wouldn't be expecting a Pen as a cert but given how the Ref had set his stall it's galling to see him dismiss it completely. Aslo a very strong case for Mooney being a yard off side in the build up to the sending off (which is even more ridiculous from the alternative angle).
Shout out to the one man away end of Hilly who I missed on the streamed version.
Fair play to the Alty TV highlights good replays of all the contentious moments, no matter how damning and absolute respect to the commentators for being balanced and who seemingly made no effort to learn any of our players or managers names, which i begrudgingly respect.

Just watched the highlights on the clip put up by username. Thanks for them!
The penalty looks an even worse decision from behind the goal.
The early save from our keeper looks more central than I thought at the time. He'd have been disappointed not to save it. The first goal was just really poor.

After watching the highlights, few things: - you have to say we could've easily conceded from the free-kick and shocking back-pass from Grand. Gray saved us there, poor keeping for the goal but so many bodies in front of him not sure how nobody gets a block to the shot. - One of the worst red card decisions you'll ever see. You can see Mooney take a look back, waiting for JJ & the contact. Shocking that the ref couldn't see it a mile off. - Our second goal was superb, Waters has some delivery on him but not sure how he can become a regular part of the team? Probably only ever backup to JT - Taylor will be the next player we sell on for a fee IMO - Burton has to go, need more athleticism in CM - Some effort from the lads, shocking call from the ref made us lose our heads for a while but showed great spirit to get two goals back with ten men. Next season will be better

Just seen the highlights then, The Ref is an absolute joker. Clearly loves himself when he gave that decision. Lets hope he refs at the Deva next year so we can all give him stick from the first minute.

Penalties similar to the one on Sunday are given every week in the premiere league even wih the "help" of VAR. Man U have been "awarded" 19 this season
Everybody cheats and tries to con the REf to win one, or roll around on the ground to get a player to sent off Gone are the days when player were honest, like the time when Fowler who was playing for Liverpool asked the Ref NOT to award him a spot kick.

Agree, thing is we did scream for a Pen for an equally innocuous challenge at the other end of the pitch. It also resulted in us getting a red card. When it's not your day, it's not your day.

Just watched the highlights on the clip put up by username. Thanks for them! The penalty looks an even worse decision from behind the goal. The early save from our keeper looks more central than I thought at the time. He'd have been disappointed not to save it. The first goal was just really poor. For anyone watching the highlights again, it may be worth noting where our two centre backs were. It is difficult to see why we ended up with Johnston having to be last man. Shouldn't be a 40 yard hole in the middle of a defence.

Shouldn't be a 40 yard hole in the middle of a defence. That was the first thing I thought when I saw a clip of the incident shortly after the game. Agree with everything that has been said about the ref but it's poor from us that they got in to that position so easily. It was as though we'd completely over-committed in search of an equaliser - shouldn't be leaving ourselves so exposed at the back with such a long time still to go.
