Makes Sleaford Mods sound like something you'd put on when your nan comes round!

Mogwai having the number one album in the official chart last week was unexpected. It's a great album and well deserved for a band that has remained steadfastly independent for 25 years. Godspeed You! Black Emperor have also announced a new album to be released next month - high times if this type of music is your thing. These two bands are up there with the best live acts I've ever seen but you wouldn't describe either as prolific, so I'm all over anything new they release. I've never managed to get any more than a passing appreciation for Mogwai, but good to see them get the number one album for the reasons you mention. Saw Godspeed a few years back and agree that they're a fantastic live act I'm enjoying the new Divide and Dissolve album too. It's an uncomfortable listen in parts, very doomy, but sometimes that's just what I want.

The Slint documentary 'Breadcrumb Trail' is free to watch on YouTube at the moment. I enjoyed it, Spiderland was an album I worked backwards to via bands who cited it as a major influence. An album that really ushered in the post-rock era.

The urban legends surrounding that album are intriguing about them needing counselling among other things due to putting so much into it. They could well be exaggerated but it's one of the most intense records I've ever heard.

It was a bit before my time but a lot of bands I listen to always seemed to mention it so I sought it out and it's been a favourite ever since. It's definitely intense, Washer is probably my favourite track but the whole thing is great. It's hard to pick out what's true and what's urban legend about Slint, I think that's part of the attraction.

I think anyone claiming they were into this album when it was released is 1991 is probably lying. It went under the radar at the time but has become something of a hipster rite of passage since.

The ridiculously slow-working My Bloody Valentine have broken the hipster internet by hinting at news on Wednesday.
This is a band didn't release anything from 1991 until 2013, when they dropped an album one Saturday night with a few hours' notice! Hopefully this is about new material and not just a reissue or something.

Nobody does anti-climaxes like them!

Enjoying the debut album from Dry Cleaning, "New Long Leg". I'm not sure it's as good as their early EPs but I love their formula. Imagine a bored singer who sounds like Jo Brand, speaking phrases she overheard on buses, over the top of The Fall-like post-punk riffs. Probably not selling it, am I, but it's pretty special. Somehow number 4 in this week's album charts as well. I'm always surprised how well some acts that I assume only I like perform in the album charts.

A musical question: which bands are now "dad rock"? People tend to think the likes of Status Quo and Supertramp, but they're more like grandad rock now. Who are the bands blokes in their 30s and 40s like, but nobody younger?
The Foo Fighters come to mind for me, and I can't imagine many young people like the Red Hot Chili Peppers, whose music hasn't aged well. Probably most of the Britpop cannon apart from Blur and Oasis as well - some great bands like Pulp and Suede who I think who get you pretty blank looks if you mentioned them to anyone under 30.

I really like their first actually. Consistently good band. My favourite recent album is Squid's debut Bright Green Field. One of the most original and talented bands around.

Yeah the firsts great as well, giant peach is probably my favourite song of theirs. Can't say I've heard of squid before, will try and give them a listen. Always surprises me how many talented bands/artists like that go under the radar.

Jazz and krautrock elements, and manic vocals. Slightly more accessible than Black Midi, who are a bit too outlandish even for me!

If you’re into quality cover versions, check out Head Music 2 on Fruit De Mer records, a double album of Krautrock covers. Particular highlight is The Arthur Park’s version of Can’s Moonshake. Camp as anything, but full of joy.

The Kosmos mixtape from J Lloyd is very addictive. The full 40 minute video (it’s just CCTV video from a rave club in the early 90s) is available to view on YouTube. As an old raver myself, I love it and below is a 2 minute sampler. Enjoy.

Favourite football songs?
The first is an obvious choice, the second is pertinent at the moment, and the third is only a few years old but sounds like something straight from the Britpop era.

Best footie anthem ever. Forget New Order, this was the sound of Italia 90. Remember they must have played it half a dozen times in High Society after England beat Cameroon to reach the semifinals. The mighty P.W.E.I.:

Got to have Three Lions ‘98 as the top dog - that version was better than the original. My number one football song. Carnavale de Paris by those Crewe Alex fans Dario G is up there - a proper top summer football tournament anthem. Then of course you’ve got Vindaloo, which is interestingly more of a “chant” than Three Lions is yet never seemed to catch on as well as Three Lions did in the stands for some reason. The composition of Vindaloo lends itself to be easily chanted by football fans but for whatever reason fans didn’t really take to it. There’s a new version of it that’s just come out - Vindaloo 2 - which is exactly the same song but sung by a bunch of irritating annoying so-called “celebrities”, Paddy McGuiness, Danny Dyer and Leigh “Keith Lemon” Francis with Bez, Rowetta and Keith Allen making cameos. Awful, awful, awful.
