Surely 3/1 for Marcus Rashford to win is giving money away.

Don't know, the vote often tends to be a bit Middle England and pro-establishment, like when Zara Phillips won it for larking around on a horse.

Indeed. The BBC won’t let a black working class footballer with socialist values win it, no chance.

Was merely following up on Lobster’s summation but accept your point.
Basically yeah Rashford won’t win it, his face doesn’t fit.

Sorry, I led it that way unintentionally.
Hopefully it will be Rashford. Can't really think of anyone else who stands out.

I think Rashford has a great chance and he was awarded the MBE in the Queens Birthday Honours list

Was going to say he hasn't done anything this year, but that fight with Wilder was only February. Feels like an era ago!

Don't know, the vote often tends to be a bit Middle England and pro-establishment, like when Zara Phillips won it for larking around on a horse. Suggest you do a bit of reading up on past winners. Mo Farah from a Somalian refugee family, Joe Calzaghe who is the son of a Italian family and from a working class area of Wales, Lewis Hamilton who said that he was from a poor background and most recently Ben Stokes who was born in New Zealand. Andy Murray seems to have this myth attached to him that he is from a wealthy family but he’s come from humble beginnings to become one of the greatest athletes the UK has produced. Pretty diverse backgrounds to say the least.

Yea, in fairness he hasn’t achieved anything to warrant being considered for SPOTY. Nailed on for Hammer isn’t it.

Motor racing is not a sport I follow, but I find the rules a bit odd the people who have the fastest car are given a headstart on the slowest cars thereby ensuring the slowest cars can't win. I was involved in greyhound racing for many years and dogs were graded according to speed. And handicapped accordingly ie fastest dogs started off the back a much fairer system and all had a chance to win.

The fastest qualifiers should have the highest placing on the starting grid surely? Otherwise what’s the point in qualifying races? Think dogs are different as there are no qualifying races.

There are qualifying races they are called trials, times recorded and starting positions given based on that. If a dog is recorded as17 seconds for 310yds and another is 16.95 seconds the faster dog will start 1 yd further back. There are also level break races for dogs of similar times. It does not reward failure but gives all equal chances.

Were you involved with the ‘flapping tracks’ ups and downs ie Chester, Winsford, Westhaughton et al? Even the grading and handicapping was extremely subjective back in the day with a few ‘ringers’ thrown in to the mix. Ah, the good old days!!!

Just to provoke a debate, is driving a car quickly really a sport?

Just to provoke a debate, is driving a car quickly really a sport? Fair question. I always struggle to take golf and darts seriously as sports, firstly because they're not very athletic, and secondly because there's no way to stop your opponent playing well in them. They seem more like hobbies. Then again I would always argue snooker is a sport, and that's probably just because I like it.

Can’t wait for the Olympics to come around . . . Olympic Break Dancing. What the effing hell are we coming to? Just had a look - I thought you were making that up! I'd get rid of all that horse crap myself, especially the dressage. Really the sports should be ones anybody can play and succeed in, not ones where you need to be a member of the nobility. I'd also say football could be axed, given how much exposure it already gets and that it's not taken very seriously at the Olympics. I'm not sure what the Olympic Committee's problem is with squash - a very accessible game, and at the top level an extremely physically demanding one.

Squash has been trying to get into the Olympics for decades, over the years they’ve been beaten by illustrious sports such as skateboarding, sport climbing, BMX, surfing, golf and wushu (which is basically Kung-fu). Even the backing of Roger Federer hasn’t been enough to convince the powers that be to allow squash to compete at Olympic level.
Wonder what this forum’s admin Si has to make of it all - a very keen squash player!

Get rid of Dressage, Clay Pigeon Shooting, Golf, Sailing and give some consideration to Conkers, Scissors, Paper, Stone and Tug o’ War. Soon we’ll be having Olympic Bake-off and Olympic Sewing Bee. My Arse!!!
