Wondering if anyone knows what Dave Powell is up to. His Chronicle updates have been the first shortcut I've looked at in my browser every morning for years but I've noticed he's only doing about one a week and not even doing match reports. Has he moved on to pastures new?

Has he moved on to pastures new? He’s now covering Liverpool and Everton over at the Liverpool Echo. A great loss to Chester FC’s local coverage.

Our loss but a good step up for him!

Thanks. Don't know how I missed that, although half the thread is just yet another row! Sorely missed - we've been spoilt these last few years - pleased for him though, sounds like a cracking new job.

As others have said losing Dave Powell to local football in Chester is a big loss but I am pleased he has found a very decent job at the Echo.

I have to add, and I hope Dave himself agrees, that his departure from reporting on the club is softened by the excellent communication we now have from the current board - the best in terms of keeping the fanbase informed since reformation IMO.

I wonder if Dave is going to be replaced at the Chronicle as we will miss his reports, gossip and general input on all things CFC No that’s already been done, no specific Chester FC reporter anymore. That’s the initial reason Dave stopped. He started doing general news and lifestyle pieces for the wider Cheshire area interspersed with a bit of Chester FC and sport, but has since moved on to the Echo to cover off-field/business matters at Liverpool and Everton. We’re being covered in the same way the likes of Vauxhall’s, Upton AA, Blacon Youth have been covered in past years. “Match reports” usually taken from the mouth of the team manager over the phone on a Monday morning detailing key incidents in the game. The paper can’t justify a specific dedicated reporter for a sixth-tier non-league football club during times of financial recession.

The Port Vale reporter seems to be the person who currently does occasional articles on Chester. He himself was probably told to double up in his role to justify staying in it, as I get the impression Reach do not consider dedicated reporters for lower division and non-League clubs to be a necessity. Sad sign of the times.

I'm sure Dave is still in contact with those at the club who gave him the information he passed on to the supporters but sadly he can't inform us anymore as he does not have the official capacity to do so a sad loss to all

I used to think the coverage we got in the Chronicle was the norm for cities and towns with only one major sports club. I realise now how spoilt we’ve been with the coverage Dave provided. Sad times

Sad times Sadly, with a few exceptions, regional newspapers are being run into the ground by companies such as Reach. You almost need bloggers or fanzines to step into the breach, but obviously you lose the impartiality.

Dave certainly gave us excellent coverage, and without him reporting via the Chronicle anymore then I've removed the Chester Chronicle twitter handle from the Social Media section of this forum. I've replaced it with Ollie Bayliss, who is a journalist who is always on the ball with anything relating to non-league football. So for anyone that uses that section, the two Twitter feeds on that section of this forum are him, and the official club handle.

Massive shame for Dave and for the supporters of our club, but one forced by the fact that newspapers do not sell anymore. Happening all over the country, and if Trinity Group use Dave to supply news to LFC and EFC supporters at least it means that someone who is genuinely one of our own remains in a job during this shitty time.
Dave is a smashing fella and at least now will get to watch the games with his supporters head on, not his work head.

Local newspapers are dying and cuts are being made everywhere. That's the harsh reality of it unfortunately
For me, the next step for dedicated local print journalism is a pay for view online service, such as what The Athletic provides. If I was a dedicated football journalist like Dave Powell, who had spent years covering a decent sized football club and had established a great relationship with the supporters of that club, then my next step if I wanted to continue covering that club as a full time job, would be to create a personal website and provide a patreon service. For those not familiar, this is a pay per view service where fans pay say £10 a month to gain access to a website, which would be run by the journalist, updated every day with stories, interviews, podcasts, videos, match reports etc. I'm sure someone like Dave, with the contacts and exclusives he has garnered at Chester, would easily be able to attract a few hundred fans into paying £10 a month for a patreon service provided by him.
However, he's clearly moved on to something more stable so fair play and best wishes to him!
