Sadly passed away aged 60. Weeks after having a blood clot removed from his brain, had a heart attack and died. He dominated the '86 World cup with his performances and one of the most talented footballers I've seen. RIP

Didn't always cover himself in glory, but a genius on the pitch and 60 is no age to go.

Second best player ever after his compatriot Messi.
What a character he was too.

Echo the above. A flawed genius. I'm too young to remember Pele but count myself lucky to have seen Cruyff, Maradona, Messi and Ronaldo. Ps might as well get the spelling of his name right if we are paying tribute.

Short arsed, drug fuelled cheat. Tragic that he has died at such an age. I don’t get the romantic obsession with foreign players and managers. The UK second to none in terms of football talent. Agreed, there’s no doubting his talent but part of being ‘the best footballer in the world’ is acting in a manner befitting a professional athlete. You never hear Stanley Matthews mentioned in the conversation for best ever player, this guy changed the way the game is played long before maradonna took to the pitch and was still playing at the top league in the world at 50!!

Sorry but i don't care TBH. He hated the English i never forgot the 'hand of god' (cheating twat) In his last match for Argentina he was juiced out of his head and failed a drug test lHe did appear to hate the English. That's not uncommon among Argentines I believe, I've heard people who have been to Argentina say a lot of people just won't speak to you if you're English, much like how a generation here held a resentment of Germans throughout their lives. It's easy to dismiss it as xenophobia unless you've shared their experience. There's no doubt he wasn't a great role model, and he didn't look after himself either which sadly is probably what's put him in an early grave. I prefer to just think of him as an incredible footballer. A bit like Ronaldo with Portugal, he was more or less single-handedly able to make an ordinary side great. Napoli were arguably the best team in the world when he played for them, aside from that they've never really done anything in their history. As much as I like the tactical side of the game, it's kind of nice when a player comes along who's so good, he renders it all but redundant. I've always loved this photograph, despite this article picking it apart. www.theguardian.com/football/blog/2014/jul/05/diego

If we hadn't gone to war with them in 1982 for the Falklands we might have had a chance of getting to the final 1986!
Also, most countries hate the British, most likely for taking over their colonies in the first place!

Quality player terrible touch though just watch this video.
I’m fortunate to have seen him play for Barcelona at Old Trafford in the Cup Winners Cup (remember that!), didn’t have his best night, Robson kept him quiet!
Love this video, don’t see this anymore.

Undoubtedly a great player. Pity he sullied his reputation really.
In his prime, his thighs were like tree trunks - super fit and immensely talented.
It's really hard to compare generations, but you inevitably wonder how he would have coped today. On the one hand, the pitches these days are way better than the ones he used to play on - which would definitely help his dribbling - but on the other hand, opposition players these days all have to be supreme athletes. Looking at old footage, some of the defenders he was up against were no where near his level of fitness.

The defenders back then were cloggers who battered you, top level players these days are all soft, cuddly toys in comparison. Ron Harris, Norman Hunter and Terry Butcher or Harry Maguire, John Stones and Kyle Walker? Maradona would’ve thrived a lot more in this day and age.

Plus you can ask the likes of Gary Lineker, Glen Hoddle, Paul Gascoigne and Harry Kane if he “hated” them - they’d all tell you otherwise. Must’ve been a Spurs thing. Shilton has been dining off passing the blame for a poor goal to concede ever since.

Furious at the time over the handball but sometimes you just have to admire genius. I'm over it now.

Undoubtedly an exceptional talent but I just couldn't warm to him as a person in the same way as, say, Pele, Moore and the underrated Eusebio who by all accounts was an absolute gent. Maybe it's the whole Hand of God thing Whatever, still a tragically young age to go

Great players would undoubtedly adapt their game. I didn't think about the cloggers - that would certainly help him! Looking back at old footage like I have done today, it's amazing how much the game has moved on - not just what players can and can't get away with, but also general levels of fitness. I've seen him dribble past players who look like they should be playing for the Dog & Duck rather than in front of 60,000 people!

Get past the cheat accusations and Maradona was a true football god To be fair even though the fitness wasn’t there he also had to deal with sub standard pitches and heavy balls. People should Listen to Linekers assessment. I think it really shines a light on the true greatness of Maradona

There's a documentary film about him on All 4 at the moment that's worth watching. Still no surer whether I liked him or not after seeing it. Easy to sympathise and respect him in parts but no so much with others. What does come across is that he struggled with fame and more or less developed an alter ego to cope with it.

People should Listen to Linekers assessment. I think it really shines a light on the true greatness of Maradona Add to that the fact that he was absolutely leathered by every hairy arsed neanderthal 70s/80s centre half in world football, and jumped back up and gave it them back. Never backed off a scrap either as the video below shows. An absolute joy to watch. I was at OT for the Barcelona game too, Robson smothered him but his touch stays with me to this day. Troubled fella off the pitch but that doesn't detract from his sheer unmatched brilliance on it. As for hating the English we were at war with his country, and there is a section of the English people that hardly endear themselves to foreigners if we are being honest.
