Following an extremely disappointing result at the weekend we host Alfreton Town at home tomorrow night where we finally look secure a positive result to stop the rot. We’ve only recorded one win in seven which is absolutely unacceptable, so we seriously have to get an act together now if we want to fulfil our aims of finishing in the top seven again, and to prove to this league just why we deserve to. This will be our fourth match since our break so we can no longer use that as an excuse, even though in spite of that no wins in three is still rather poor.
Our last match was on Saturday as we lost 2-1 at home against Gateshead in what was a really miserable day, both literally and also on the pitch. The first period was really hard to watch because we were chasing shadows and couldn’t live with a superior Gateshead. It only took 12 minutes for Gateshead to take the lead as Jordan Preston swept in on the edge of the box to make it 1-0. The scoreline stayed like that at the break, and we could have no complaints as we offered next to nothing. Meanwhile, our second half performance was improved as we had much more of the possession and had some life in us. Less than ten minutes in Simon Grand equalised for us to make it 1-1, by glancing home from a lovely George Glendon cross. A few moments later Greg Olley did have the ball in the net for Gateshead, but fortunately his strike was disallowed for offside. Grand turned from hero to villain, because with less than ten minutes left an awful back-pass allowed Macaulay Langstaff to pass in to make it 2-1 to Gateshead. Despite signs of improvement, again we could have no complaints as the visitors ran out as worthy winners.
Alfreton Town will be making the venture from Derbyshire having made an uninspiring start to the campaign. The Reds have won only two and lost half of their opening ten fixtures, so we really do have to be winning this one, even though it can be argued it would just cover the cracks of our previous two disappointments. We will be up against one former Seal tomorrow evening, who is centre back James Jones. James graduated from our Academy in July 2017 where, having turned out to be one of our bright lights in an otherwise diabolical campaign, he left in July 2018 to join Salford City. Jonah rejoined us in July of last year (this time on a season-long loan from Salford City) where he was very in-and-out of our side, although to his credit he did pop up with the odd goal. He departed us at the conclusion of his loan to link up back with Salford, although he left them for good too as he signed for Alfreton Town in September of this year, where he has been at ever since.
The visitors are the type of team who will probably come here to play for the draw, so I’m not expecting a thriller as Billy Heath’s physical sides have often gave us tough games in the past. These are the type of encounters we usually come out of feeling frustrated as we often can’t break past sides who come here to defend, so I hope our managers will conjure up a successful plan tonight given we haven’t scored too many goals of late. I can recall us somehow giving Alfreton Town a good 3-0 beating at home last season without playing particularly well, so perhaps this is the type of luck we need at this moment in time given we’re stuck in a sticky patch. Come On City!
Score: Chester FC (Elliott, Livesey) 2-0 Alfreton Town
Attendance: 0 (0 Alfreton Town)
My predicted lineup:
Gray
K.Roberts Livesey Grand Taylor
Jackson Glendon Weeks Bauress
Hughes Elliott
