Well the ref was totally right about the pen looked soft on the night but seeing it again he blocked the ball with his lower arm.

As said by others, last night wasn’t a great match and we’ve played better than that and lost games already this season. Goodwin looks the part and will hopefully get another chance at York, as should Morgan.
What worries me is that Gray looks low on confidence and has dropped a few clangers lately and poor kicking. Hopefully, a clean sheet will do him and the rest of defence the World of good, but I’m sure York will do their homework and see that this will be one of our weaknesses, as they did last season. It doesn’t help that we give away so many needless free kicks in danger positions either.

Agree with the comments so far regarding just needing to win the game after a poor return of two points from a possible nine - it was only really just the Farsley Celtic result and the Gateshead performance that disappointed me; however I appear to be in the minority in saying I thought we put in a good showing and actually played pretty well against a difficult, physical side. We were a million times better than Saturday.
We quickly managed to counter their physical presence in central midfield by switching to a more direct style but we’ve played direct for a lot of the season so far and it’s been pants; I’d say the reason that it worked so well this time was purely down to Will Goodwin’s presence - the lad is an absolute beast. He deserved his MOTM award and I for one was willing him to score at every opportunity, a goal was the only thing his performance was missing. What also helped was Elliott was much better in position and on the ball, the combination of those two kept the ball up there in attack more often than we’ve seen all season.
Just a word on Johnston - that was easily his best performance in a blue and white shirt (Saturday was his worst IMO), which was finally good to see. I thought as the game went on he grew in confidence and was well involved in a lot of our best play, including two of the goals. It was also good to see Jamie Morgan show what he can do going forward, seemingly making up for Joel Taylor being off the pace. Perhaps that is what we’ve lacked so far with defensively-minded Roberts and under-par Taylor at full back up until this week. Took his goal brilliantly well too, although I was cursing him for not pulling it back for Goodwin at the time.
Didn’t think we’d end the season with a clean sheet either, so that was another bonus - despite a couple of hairy moments early in the second half at 1-0. You felt we needed the second goal to come, fortunately it did.
The only criticism I have is how wasteful we were in attacking positions, Johnston, Bauress, Glendon and Elliott were all guilty of poor choices when we hit on the break. Still, we scored three so can’t complain about that too much after the event.

3-0 scoreline definitely flattered us, Alfreton should have scored at least 1 after the long range shot came off the bar and could have had 2 with the other lad hitting the post soon after. Against any half-decent teams we're conceding there and all of a sudden its 1-1 / 1-2.
In saying that we did look very dangerous going forward and were fairly clinical. Really good quick break for the first leading to the penalty, great interlinking play from Elliot and Morgan down the right for the second and really good run and feet from Dudley for the third, and there were a few more decent chances in there too. I've seen a lot mentions for JJ's performance and rightly so, he still sometimes takes too many touches and runs himself into a cul-de-sac but his output is certainly improving, but I thought that was a really good performance from Elliot today. He's starting to show that he's not all pace and running onto balls in behind but he can hold it up at his feet and link up with the midfield/FBs too, which will be important when teams don't give Glendon and Weeks much time (which should be most teams).
Agree with the comments on Taylor, he hasn't looked himself in recent games and has given possession away far too often - is he carrying a knock? He seemed to not be moving too well towards the end of the game. Anyway, onto York (A), tough game on paper and it's hard to see us getting much from it if we don't improve defensively.
