It seems like there's a row developing every Christmas about this song that's akin to the poppies debate and the outrage of "Easter" being removed from Easter eggs.
Radio 1 is currently censoring the line with the word "faggot", while Radio 2 is leaving it is and 6 Music is leaving it up to the presenter.
I always think Shane McGowan talks a lot of sense with his defence of the line, saying he and Kirsty McColl are basically playing characters in that song who aren't suppose to be role models and are having an argument in 1987 language. To call it a "homophobic" song is lazy.
That doesn't necessarily mean it should go out to an all-ages, mainstream audience though, and I believe the Pogues have also said they're not bothered about the line being censored. I kind of agree with Nick Cave as well though who says that if a song can't be played in its original form than rather than fudge the lyrics to suit a 2020 audience, maybe it would be better not to play it at all.
I understand why the BBC are doing it basically, and rather than get outraged, maybe people would be better questioning where they get their media from. If you tune into the BBC's flagship radio station, you're going to get patronising, BBC-moderated content. If you want something edgier and more discerning, listen to 6 Music or play your own music.

I generally agree, that one word is no worse in the context than the other words in that particular verse when heard by children on mainstream radio (slut on junk etc).
In fact, funny story, my six year old kid was shocked and said “she said a naughty word... ARSE!”

I suppose it's the particular offence that word might cause to the LGBT community which is important here. When used today, it is almost exclusively used as a homophobic slur and therefore I do think it is worth considering whether having that word on the radio all month *may* contribute to a wider use of the term, or normalisation of it as some sort of 'banter'.
Of course, just like the Black Lives Matter issue - the only people's views I really care about on this are those who it effects - in this case, the LGBT community. If they find it offensive, remove it, if they're generally not bothered, then leave it in.

Faggots are food as per the Oxford Dictionary definition
"meat cut into small pieces and mixed with bread to form a ball, then baked or fried and eaten hot"
They've been made by Mr Brains for years
I haven't heard of the LGBT community making a song and dance about them and they are on display in supermarkets all year round not just the month of December

I apologise for my earlier post; although I don’t think the word used in the particular context is as any more offensive as some of the other lyrics used in the same context in the song, Deva Chanter is entirely correct in saying that it’s up to the community who have had that word used in a derogatory way towards them to determine its offence.

The use you've cited predates the homophobic one. It's probably precisely because the word refers to a lump of meat that it shouldn't be used to refer to a person. Fred Phelps of the notorious Westboro Baptist Church said he used the term because its origin is a bundle of sticks used for burning, and that's what he preached would happen to them in the afterlife. There are all sorts of reasons why context can change the meaning of a word.

Dunno, not really a Christmas person, find it depressing. If I had to pick one song it would probably by St Etienne’s ‘I was born on Christmas Day’.

I quite like Fairytale of New York, although I do think there's a new crowd that's latched onto the song's popularity without really getting it.
I really like the new Christmas album from Calexico, and 'Just Like Christmas' by Low is an under-the-radar Christmas song that deserves to be heard more widely.

The Story of Fairytale of New York; all eight members of The Pogues return to the studio for the first time in 18 years . BBC4 tonight 10.00 - 11.00pm - worth a watch me thinks.

I love BBC Four on Fridays. Reliving the good and the best-forgotten from the 1990s TOTP reruns, followed by whatever music stuff they're showing. Usually a repeat and often music I don't particularly like, but still interesting. It's the only time all week I watch live TV.

Incidentally, I was reading up on Kirsty Maccoll after watching the documentary. I knew about how she died, but the lack of justice for those responsible is appalling.
The boathand supposedly responsible avoided prison by paying a fine of around £60, and paid her family barely $2,000 in compensation. The boat was owned a multimillionaire family who run one of Mexico's biggest supermarket chains. There is speculation that they arranged for someone on a low wage to take the blame for the incident so that the fine would be kept low, and compensated him for doing so.
So sad. She's not the only artist ever to have died young, but she was so blameless for it and her music is so heartfelt and humble, it's hard to listen to it and think of anything but how tragically short her life was.

In a crowded market, this has to be one of the worst Christmas songs ever recorded, I cannot stand it. Glad I'm not the only one who doesn't like this song. I've always had an irrational hatred of it, just grates on me. My favourite Christmas song is In Dulci Jubilo by Mike Oldfield (though I'm not sure it was actually meant to be a Christmas song?). So Much Wine by The Handsome Family is great too - it mentions Christmas Day so it classes as a Christmas song for me.

"Winter Wonderland" by "The Courteeners". Not only another great song by Manchester's second finest band but all proceeds went to "Shelter".
God bless the Band.
