The man lived a charmed life.
Not the greatest of years for the Royal Family but I trust they will get through this.

Did a lot for charity and for young people through the Duke of Edinburgh award.
Will be sorely missed

I quite liked him. Put his foot in his mouth a lot but he meant well. The old and young Royals are generally alright, it's the boomer ones I'm not keen on!

I've deleted FOP's unkind comment and the fallout from it, and given him a rest for 24 hours. Can't help but think if people just ignored him though, he'd get bored and it would show him up more than any comeback does.

I don’t come online for a few hours and he’s made a tit out of himself again. A real unpleasant individual. Needs banning for good. Contributes nothing to the forum but nastiness.

In less than 24 hours he’ll be back on showing just what a piece of work he is. Just ban him. Oaks Blue got banned for much less.

I've deleted FOP's unkind comment and the fallout from it... Yet you’ve allowed the “fallout” to continue unchecked as above. Allowing a succession of posters to aim personal abuse at another poster because they disagree with his opinion about a racist anti-Semitic old man. Similarly I cannot get a permanent ban for having a different opinion to other posters about a racist anti-Semitic celebrity. When I was told to “respect the dead” - what, just because he’s dead we should respect him? Do people respect Mussolini, Hitler, Thatcher, Saville now because they’re dead? It’s a nonsensical stance to have isn’t it? If people get upset by me pointing out their rank hypocrisy well then that is their problem isn’t it? He disrespected many, many peoples in life so why should I respect him in his death? Respect is earned, not demanded.

He was an old casually racist bastard as most people’s grandparents are... but hardly the same league as Hitler. Your favourite politician is a racist anti-Semitic old man in the eyes of many. The thing is I agree with you on a lot of issues, but the way you put them across is so abrasive that it has the opposite effect and you actively turn people off your points.

My favourite politician isn’t Boris Johnson, far from it!
I see your point about me - in that people who are straight-talking and say it how it is tend to upset others.

Also I can’t agree with the idea that he was a “casual old racist like your nan” when you consider some of the stuff he has gone on record saying.
He has made highly offensive comments about Asians, Africans, Jews and women, he has called for a plague to thin out the working class (the likes of you, me, pretty much every one of us on this thread and the overwhelmingly vast majority of the population of the country) and as recently as the ‘80s was hailing the Nazi regime and saying he and his family were increasingly concerned about the power and wealth Jews have over the world.
It’s a little more than my Nan saying the word “coon” without thinking, when referring in positive terms to a man on the telly.
Anyway, if you want to mourn his passing for eight days then fine but some of us don’t and shouldn’t be shouted down for that.

Thank god for streaming services. I’ve managed to not watch a single minute of Philip coverage, pretending like he’s been taken in his prime when he’s a man of 99 but even though I’m a republican I certainly won’t begrudge anyone who feels sad about his passing.

The BBC have had to set up a dedicated complaints line about their coverage of him because it was too much; both BBC and ITV suffered a 60+% drop in viewing figures compared to the previous Friday afternoon to Saturday morning because of their wall-to-wall coverage. BBC One and BBC Two aired the exact same programming for about 12 hours - both channels, exactly the same. What’s the point? License fee payers may feel short-changed about that.
Even noticed pretty much all radio stations playing the exact same playlist of banal droning depressing songs around tea-time on Friday whilst driving home. Too much.
As you say, thank god for the likes of Netflix.
It’s a shame the same level of coverage couldn’t have been done for the hundreds of thousands of pensioners killed by austerity/Covid.

Makes me glad for Cbeebies. Whatever madness is going on in the world, you still get the same stories about Upsy Daisy losing her ball then finding it again.

Respect is earned, not you may not like him, I was never his biggest fan, but you are very similar to him in many ways. You post looking for reactions, but unfortunately you only have one theme. I think he will be remembered for the life he led. a lot longer than you will for your one sided posts.

Let's keep the thread about Prince Phillip rather than FOP, shall we? I wouldn't say it needs to be a thread of gushing tributes, he was a controversial figure and I don't see any harm in tastefully discussing that, but we can do better than this on both sides of the debate.

Funny how people conveniently forget he was grooming Windsor when she was 13 and he was 18.
Vile.

He had good points and bad. It should be remembered what a messed up early life he led, I don't think he actually knew his own identity,,different times breeds different people. He had a very good war record. But an awful habit of saying the wrong things a lot like childish attempts at humour.

Ninety Nine year old man with heart condition dies. Shock? The only surprising element is the fact that he has had a life of privilege and access to immediate and the best medical care not available to most. Oh, and he has never really done a day's work in his life. Okay so he contributed to the war effort like thousands of others, only they didn't come back to a pampered life of luxury, many didn't comeback at all. These people who put flowers and candles outside buck house, don't they realise the royals are taught to believe they are superior and look down on the hoi-polloi. The excessive coverage of his demise has been sickening. God help us when Liz kicks off.
