On the back of a mini break we are back in action tomorrow night as we take on Stockport County at home in the Cheshire Senior Cup 1st Round where we look to get back to winning ways. I imagine the Cheshire Cup isn’t high on the priority list for either side because for us we look to turn our league fortunes around in order to mount a play-off bid, while for Stockport they will look to turn their own patchy start around to launch a promotion push back to the EFL. Therefore, I expect the visitors to field a second string side while I reckon we will also put out a weakened team given we have a huge match away at York City in the league on Saturday. Saying that though, I’d still like us to take this competition a little bit seriously because it’s always nice to win football matches, and the last time we were in the Cheshire Cup we reached the semi-finals two seasons ago before the competition was declared null and void due to Covid-19, which was a shame.
Our last match was two Saturdays ago as we drew 0-0 away against Kettering Town in what was a very even encounter. The first half was a really cagey affair with very few clear-cut chances evident for either side. After the half hour mark Alex Brown went so close to taking the lead for Kettering Town, but luckily enough his dink came back off the crossbar. We received a fair bit of possession but we couldn’t convert anything out of it, hence we headed into the interval still on level terms. Meanwhile, the second period was relatively similar, although in my opinion we were more effective when on the ball as we created some decent opportunities. Less than five minutes into the half Kyle Perry got sent off for Kettering Town due to picking up his second yellow card. We were dealt with a big blow with little time remaining, however, as we too were reduced to ten men as a result of Kevin Roberts receiving his second yellow card, so like Kyle Perry he too was sent off. Neither side could find a breakthrough, thus we had to settle for our third goalless away draw in a row.
Stockport County ply their trade in the Vanarama National League and will be making the journey from Greater Manchester having made a decent start to the new season. The Hatters were highly tipped to be challenging for the title during the Summer having made some eye-watering captures such as Scott Quigley, Tom Walker, Ben Whitfield from Torquay United, and more recently Oliver Crankshaw from Bradford City, while former Seal John Rooney still plays for the Edgeley Park side having won the National League Player Of The Year award for the second successive season last campaign. County made a very slow start to the new season having been well-beaten by sides such as Dagenham And Redbridge, Yeovil Town, and FC Halifax Town in the opening few weeks which prompted some supporters to question the future of manager Simon Rusk. However, it seems as if our Lancashire opponents are now turning things around given they have won their last three league outings (with one of them being a 2-1 home win over our friends down the A483), hence they are currently just two points outside the play-offs. We could be up against one former Seal tomorrow evening, who is John Rooney. Centre midfielder John joined us on loan from Bury FC in January 2014 where he scored one goal in four appearances. Due to that, John signed for us on a permanent basis from Bury FC later on in January 2014 where he had a successful tenure here, with him particularly scoring some memorable free kicks against the likes of Wrexham and Macclesfield Town. Unfortunately though things ended on a sour note, because in June of 2016 Rooney departed us to join arch-rivals Wrexham where he went on to score against us in a 1-1 draw in 2017. Lastly, back in June of last year John signed for Stockport County from Barrow on a whopping three-year deal which is where he has been at since, although that has certainly been well worth it thus far given he was named the Vanarama National League Player Of The Year last season.
Looking forward to this one tomorrow night ahead of three huge league fixtures over the next fortnight that will determine what direction we are heading in, so hopefully this Cheshire Senior Cup tie will be a nice warm-up for York City, Gloucester City, and Southport. Hopefully we can make a couple of signings before York, so with that in mind I expect us to field a mixed side tomorrow evening hopefully consisting of some players who are coming back from injury. The problem is though a lot of our younger lads are now out on loan, so unless we put 24-hours notice on some of them I can’t really see many of them featuring tomorrow night like they usually would for a Cheshire Cup game. Come On City!
