On the back of three straight home games we are finally back on the road as we make the journey to Derbyshire tomorrow to play Buxton away where we look to extend our unbeaten run to five games. This will be a tricky game as Buxton have assembled a strong squad, however I believe we are playing them at the right time as they surprisingly find themselves lower down in the table. It may be just a case of them finding their feet at this level, so hopefully we will capitalise on that because we are on a great run of form. Joe Lynch and Adam Thomas will finally be available tomorrow having served their three-match suspensions, so that is a much-needed boost for us. Despite having had a depleted squad lately, we have still picked up the results, while now the bodies are starting to come back it is a win-win scenario for us.
Our last match was last Saturday as we won 2-0 at home against Pontefract Collieries in the Emirates FA Cup 2nd Qualifying Round where we won our second game in a row. The first-half was a turgid affair as we created very little in terms of chances. Thus, it was little surprise that the game remained goalless at half-time. However, our showing in the second-period was much more like it, as we were more dangerous in our play which eventually saw us win the tie. On the 63rd-minute mark Kurt Willoughby turned home from close range to make it 1-0 to us. Then, 13 minutes later Kurt Willoughby was at it again to make it 2-0 to us, as he whipped a wonderful free-kick into the top corner. We avoided a huge upset to advance to the 3rd Qualifying Round.
Buxton have made a disappointing start to life in the National League North, as they find themselves down in 18th with just one win in their opening eight games, which sits them just one point above the relegation zone. The Bucks had a remarkable campaign last time out though, as they were champions of the Pitching In Northern Premier League Premier Division under the guidance of Steve Cunningham. Buxton made some impressive signings during the Summer, with the likes of Scott Boden, Serhat Tasdemir, Sean Newton, and Jake Moult joining new manager Jamie Vermiglioโs side, however they are still adjusting to life at this level, so the Derbyshire club are arguably in a false position. We could face four former Seals tomorrow, who are Sean Newton, James Hardy, Matt Sargent, and Jason Gilchrist. Firstly, left back Sean began his career at Chester City in July 2007 having graduated through our academy, where in August 2007 he signed for Southport on loan. In November of that year he returned to us before joining Droylsden on loan in February 2008, and after returning to us in May 2008 he signed for Droylsden on a permanent basis in August of that year. In February of this year Sean joined Buxton on loan from York City until the end of last season, although he signed for Buxton on a permanent basis from York City in May of this year, which is where he has been at ever since. Next, attacking midfielder and winger James joined us in June of last year from Altrincham, where he failed to get going due to injuries plus a lack of game time. In March of this year James joined Buxton on loan until the end of last season, with him returning to us in April. However, Hardy was released by us in May, so he signed for Buxton on a permanent basis in June which is where he has been at ever since. Centre midfielder Matt joined us on loan from Salford City in March of this year until the end of last season, where he was a bright spark in an otherwise disappointing campaign. In May he returned to Salford City from us, while earlier on in September Matt signed for Buxton on loan for a month from Salford City, which is where he has been at ever since. Lastly, striker Jason joined us on loan from Burnley in January 2016, but unfortunately due to a bad injury he returned to Burnley in February of that year. Gilchrist signed for Buxton from York City last December, which is where he has been at ever since.
Looking forward to my second visit to the Tarmac Silverlands Stadium, having attended our 3-2 friendly defeat at Buxton in September 2020. Hopefully there will be a lot more cheer tomorrow, plus letโs hope we will take a big following as Calum McIntyre and our players deserve it. We have won three of our last four games, so there is no excuse for us not taking a following of around 400/500 over to Derbyshire really. Tomorrowโs game will be our first of two away games in a row, as on Tuesday night we face a trip up to Chorley, so we have a very important few days ahead for sure. Come On City ๐ตโช๏ธ๐ตโช๏ธ!
