This is very sad. He was an incredible winger. Small in stature but fast and skillful, he wove through defences at will. He on the left and Dearden on the right. My best memories of Chester as a kid of 15:was watching them in their light blue kit. Condolences to his family.

Sad to hear this news. Always remember a breakaway goal at sealand road- in the rain and mud he rounded the keeper approached the goal line got down on his knees and headed it over the line. RIP

Andrew McKelvie Hughes Provan (1 January 1944 – 11 May 2023), also known as Drew Provan, was a Scottish footballer who played as a winger in the Scottish Football League for St Mirren, in the Football League for Barnsley, York City, Chester, Wrexham, Southport and Torquay United, and in the North American Soccer League for the Philadelphia Atoms.[1][2]
Provan died from complications from Alzheimer's disease in Torquay, on 11 May 2023, at the age of 79.[3]
played for both RIP

Sad news, he was in the team when i first started watching Chester. I seem to recall in those days we rarely lost at home, and rarely won away

As others have commented, Billy on the right, Andy on the left.
I seem to recall one game at Sealand Road where they hit crossfield balls to each other, just for the fun of it.

Yes they certainly were. I made a rosette up which was light blue, presumably from the club and I added either Provan or Dearden on, with a label gizmo...what was that tool called? I probably have it amongst all the memorabilia. Andy was small and from memory near hunchback in appearance. Incredibly fast and skillfull and strong. The sky blue and red numbered kit remains my favourite. Days of incredible all out attacking football. Mike Sutton, Bradbury, Cheetham and the immense Turner marshalling the defence. I captured some film which is on Youtube. Let me know if you need the link.

If I recall the purists insisted Chester should always play in stripes.

Sent Graham Turner a copy and he was very grateful. My tired old mind may be romanticising a bit but I seem to remember Graham Birks giving Alan Skirton a tremendous right hook in the F A Cup game against Bristol City around that time. It really was proper football at Sealand Road, wish it was still there and not a bloody shopping centre!!

It really was proper football at Sealand Road, wish it was still there and not a bloody shopping centre!! Graham Birks was a speedy, very effective full-back. He grew a thick beard during his time with us, still something of a novelty for a footballer at the time. A cup game against Derby County drew the national press down to Sealand Road, and the report in (I think) the Observer next day described him as 'bearded like the prophet'. He was generally of a fairly equable temperament, but I remember a match against Workington in what must have been 1971 when he was marking a very slightly built winger called Dave Helliwell. All was well until a period in the second half when he seemed to be sticking unusually close to his man while the ball bobbled around the rest of the pitch. When it came in their general direction he ignored it completely and stamped down hard on Helliwell in what is euphemistically called the groin area. I think on this occasion he did stay around long enough for the referee to confirm that this was in fact contrary to the laws of the game.

Just before my time, but great to hear these memories. They really sum up what supporting our local club is all about. It's not the glory, it's the moments.

I first read about Andy Provan's passing on a facebook thread, and i'm sure Graham Birks commented on it. I clicked on his name, and if it is the same Graham Birks he is living in Australia or New Zealand

Yes i think its Dymo. Indeed i think i have it somewhere in my treasure trove of Chester stuff in the garage. (the rosette, that is). I should try and dig it out but its a bit like going into Tutankhamen's tomb with obstacles like my son's Honda Moped in the way, all wrapped up, as he now lives in New York.
