I think mid table would be a successful progressive season, playoffs with the sides in our league is a bit of a pipe dream IMO. He have some good players but they'd have to all produce and all stay fit. I'd be happy with 10-12th. I wouldn't like to see Whitakker any more now we have Turnbull, too similar player IMO. If like to see a younger engergetic centre mid, left back and a winger.

I've heard Lathaniel Rowe-Turner might sign from Torquay and I think Keith Lowe would be a good fit. He has been told to leave Kidderminster and I think that he would be a good third/second choice centre back with his height and experience.

Updated. Taking the kids out we do need another Centre back and Centre mid. I can't see us getting another winger unless we get one amongst the trialists. Cover Centre back is probably the most key, we can't go into a season with just 2 when last year we had 4 plus SVJ II and vassell who could deputise. Centre mid looks light without Shaw. probably looking at a first 11 of Lynch Halls McCombe Astles Rowe-Turner Mahon Shaw Turnbull Chappell White Hannah Bench: Worsnop, Jones* Waters/Davies* Joyce* Bell/Akintunde Bench looks horrible.

I think defence looks alright, strikers looking better than anyone expected. It's the midfield that bothers me at the moment. Mahon hasn't been fit/at his best for a good while, Chappell is so hit and miss, Shaw is now assistant i can't see him starting every game. Only Turnbull i'm fully confident in, and i've never seen him play (for us) which says a lot!

I don't understand why Shaw can't be a regular in the side. He's only 30 and had a decent season so he's got to be more use to the team on the pitch rather than on the touchline. He can do his assistant manager's work in the week.

For me I still think we are a winger short but I guess JM is placing his faith in Chapell being fit and on form, and if not perhaps utilise the loan market.

dmcnally what is the latest on dawson Was looking very certain he was going to sign but looks unlikely now. Macca may be waiting to see what he has left in the budget, and then offering him what he can. That's a shame really, I felt like the lad had a touch of class and with a full pre season would develop nicely. I imagine that with James, Turnbull, Shaw and Joyce all central options (and Horwood if really short) then that's an area of the squad that requires no more funding. It's a shame that Macca didn't hold fire on offering Joyce a deal as I would rather have parted with him and retained Dawson.

Dawson was surely worth keeping over Joyce and Davies.

It would be sensible to have a second string keeper to cover injury/loss of form. Other than that, it's the best squad we've had for a LONG time!

I'd still like us to tie Dawson down, moreso than Lloyd, though I understand it is unlikely we will be signing anybody else let alone another central midfielder. However, with Shaw expected to take a more hands-on role with coaching and with Joyce only here as a jobber utility player (seen him in central midfield, right back and right midfield) then surely we can target Dawson to finalise our midfield? A choice of two between him, James and Turnbull would be awesome or McCarthy may even decide to keep a 4-3-3 and use them all in a beefed-up midfield.
Other than that we also need a player who can operate at right back and centre back, but I suspect Joyce will be the back-up full back and if needed we'll use someone like James in defence. Perhaps the loan market for this position and the reserve 'keeper.
I must say, if we can keep hold of Dawson and use the loan market for the other two positions, I will be delighted with the makeup of the squad as it will be the best we've ever had on paper. However, the manager needs to do an awful lot to convince me that we'll have a good season. I await his pre-season press interviews before I decide on a season ticket - any more cuckery like last term, setting ourselves up for defeat in the week and silly comments like "conceding one goal" and "this is our level" (shades of Burr's budget bashing) and I'll not be happy.

It's your call if and when you buy a season ticket but we really need to wipe the slate clean as regards to the Finnish last season, if we react negatively from the off it's not going to end well. Let's get behind the lads from the off and create a bit of atmosphere, that way we stand a fighting chance.

Dawson has got something about him that can be developed and could earn us money. He would probably be on low wages so is worth a contract, if only for 6 months. Speculate to accumulate.

We absolutely need a winger. Mahon is injury prone and Chappell has been largely poor since we signed him.
I'd echo the call to give Dawson a deal. If we can tie him down on relatively cheap wages, he'd be great cover at centre midfield.

There is no room for Dawson to fit in, nor in the budget. He'd have to be on about £50 a week if we wanted to keep him. Disappointed that Joyce has been kept on, as I'd have much preferred Dawson instead.

I have to say I have been pleasantly surprised by the quality of the recruitment over the last few weeks. It was certainly much better than I had anticipated. Our squad is still a little thin beyond the starting 11 and I do fear we have a lack of quality width, particularly if Mahon gets injured, but we have added experienced 'men', who will provide us with the strength that has been missing. Expectations have risen, however, and McCarthy has to hit the ground running with the squad he now has at his disposal. There really will be nowhere to hide for him if he can't get a grasp on what it takes to man-manage and organise a team.

Let's hope that now Shaw has replaced Iwelumo there will be a more vocal and vibrant situation in the technical area. Last year was pathetic when away teams' benches were winning the referee's ear from the start. (Solihul at home being the most notable occasion).
