What a brilliant way to end almost 4 miserable months on the road. This win makes for even better reading as we missed our ‘spine’ again, Asante was on the sidelines and we had to end the game with 10 men. To their credit, FC United were all over us in the second half and I had an awful dread that we were going to concede, but we coped with that pressure really well to gain a lovely smash and grab win.
We got off to a strong start in the first period as we were more lively on the ball and got a foothold nice and early. How we didn’t go ahead after 8 minutes I don’t know as FC United’s ‘keeper, Allinson, made one of the worst clearances I’ve witnessed which was an absolute gift for Craig Mahon who somehow missed virtually an open goal. That was a huge let-off for the hosts, although we continued to show dominance and finally went 1-0 up following more comical goalkeeping. Anthony Dudley’s header slipped under Allinson, but we didn’t care as that redeemed ourselves from Mahon’s earlier opportunity. We continued to create openings as Dudley had another header which just went over, before Dan Mooney’s shot from distance was spilled by Allinson. FC United had a couple of opportunities, but in the first half they were terrible and from our perspective we could’ve got more out of them. We headed into the interval with a slender advantage although we could’ve lead by a few more.
Quite surprisingly FC United were the more threatening side in the second half and had a number of chances to equalise. Grant Shenton was an absolute rock though and shut them out on a number of occasions to earn his second clean sheet in as many games. The hosts hit the post at one stage, and just minutes later Shenton made an outstanding save as he tipped over a shot from Kurt Willoughby. Things began to turn on its head as George Green received his second booking of the afternoon as he brought down an FC United player. He had a great game too today and it was a massive shame to see us reduced to ten men. We had to do it the hard way with the hosts still throwing everything at us. Our crucial second goal was a fantastic smash and grab one though, as sublime work by Lloyd Marsh-Hughes played in Gary Roberts who slotted in past Allinson to spark absolute scenes amongst the away end. There were plenty of heart-in-mouth moments in that second half, but we dealt with that really well today to fully deserve this victory. I’ve already spoke about Grant Shenton who was my man of the match, but all over the park there were various other contenders. Danny Livesey was great on his return, and Simon Grand and Steve Howson let nothing get past them at the back to earn another clean sheet. Bradley Jackson was no-nonsense and dealt with the FC attackers really well. Anthony Dudley’s work rate was exceptional up top and deserved to be on the score sheet too. Matty Waters also put in another assured display when he came on and is adapting really well. Lloyd Marsh-Hughes’ physicality gave FC United nightmares and played a huge part in our clinching goal.
A fantastic result to get us back on track which gives us our first away win since September 15th. It’s been well worth the wait!!! Apart from our Cheshire Cup tie away at Winsford United on Tuesday, most of our squad will have a full week to prepare for Guiseley which has come at the right time following a hectic schedule. Let’s all get behind our lads again just like today as we created a brilliant atmosphere. Onto the small matter of Winsford now.

Great afternoon out in the end - the goal that sealed it was great - loved Jonnos ecstatic sprint along the touchline, hope lots of others saw that too.
A good back to the wall performance in a difficult second half. The second yellow looked very harsh, if a foul at all, but the back 4 played really well and a big shout out to Shenton who was excellent. Onwards and upwards, with Stopforth, Burton and Asante in that side we can beat anyone in that league.

Good win this. With the return of Asante and Stopforth things are looking up.
Is there any chance Matty Hughes will be available in April?

Just got back, great to get the 3 points in a hard fought win Some very good performances today, All the back four were really solid thought Jackson coped very well with their very good winger, Grand solid again and with Livesey and Howson you know what you are going to get, very good defensive display For all the stick he gets from some, I thought Shelton was outstanding today pulled off a string of saves including two which were top draw and kept us in the game. Thought Dudley worked tirelessly again, really do think he is a very good player who will only get better playing with Asante Matty Waters did well again when he came on and really do think we have a great talent in Marsh Hughes, never looks out of place when he's on the pitch. Got to say Gary Roberts for me today was immense, his workrate, Drive, commitment was incredible, always available and looked dead in his feet at the end and then went on to seal the win with a great finish which was thoroughly deserved. Nice to see us back to winning ways away from home after all the miles travelled over the festive season Well done boys

I suggest you get a life rcb. We have just won an away game with 10 men and all you are concerned about is the grammar or spelling of posters. I’m sure you will find something to criticise in my post but if the spelling or grammar are not precisely correct why is it a problem to you. You would really enjoy the book “Eating roots and shoots” which is an excellent book for pedants like you.

You've got to love a scabby away win and that was about as scabby as they come. We hardly strung 2 passes together in the whole game, FCUM much the better football side and not much quality on display but my word, the attitude and work rate was fantastic. We just needed to win today, by hook or crook, and they delivered by refusing to go under - so much to admire about that.
We know the goals will come back when Akwasi and Stopforth are fit, and Mooney/Mahon play themselves back into form, that's not really a concern for me.
Couldn't choose between any of our back 5 today for MOTM, they all deserved it. Probably give it to Shenton or Livesey if I had to pick, both absolutely superb today.
I think Shenton has come in for lots of unfair criticism since he arrived. He's not really done that much wrong. Superb today, the save at 1-0 down was absolutely stunning.

Really enjoyed that game today. Really battling performance, especially going down to 10 men. Didnt really see Green's 2nd yellow. So cant comment. Shenton was outstanding in goal pulling off a string of great saves. All the defence played well and Livesey makes a massive difference to us. Thought Lloyd Marsh Hughes ran their defence ragged when he came on. Winning the physical battle with the bald headed centre half and providing a slide rule pass for Gary Robert's, late goal, which put the game beyond reach and sparked joyous scenes.

Today’s game saw Chester play 74% of the game with 11 men by the way, and an excellent defensive display thereafter, so well done to all. You correctly noticed my correction in regard to spelling an abbreviated word, but why you assume that to be my only concern is quite incorrect. Other than that, I’ll pass on the rest of your post.

Green’s second yellow was for putting his hand down on their defender’s shoulder whilst in a foot race whilst on the attack after turning on the half way line. It’s a foul but that’s it, really soft to be sending people off for that.
I was a bit more annoyed with Green himself for trying to do it all by himself rather than simply laying off to the onrushing man on his other side who would have been completely through on goal.

We very nearly paid the price for not finishing FCUM off in the first half when frankly they were all over the place defensively especially the goalie who looked a gibbering wreck. We could and should have wrapped it up in the first 45 minutes but couldn't find a killer touch for a second or even third goal Second half, as expected, they were much more like a home team and started stretching us and created chances
Green's second yellow looked very harsh but, personally, I've had the impression he could be a little bit of a loose cannon for a couple of weeks. Maybe it's lack of match sharpness, where he plays etc but despite his undoubted skill, I'm not yet convinced as to his value to us in a brutal league where out-and-out skill is a rarity. I desperately hope I'm proven wrong but I think he's got some way to go.
That said, after his dismissal, it was real backs to the wall stuff where the defence and Shenton did a superb job although FCUM must be kicking themselves for not getting a point. Livesey and Howson showed real grit, Shenton made some great stops and even managed to wind up the home crowd behind the goal. However, my MoM goes to Dudley - another terrific shift in a formation that doesn't suit him.
The late winner was actually a terrific breakaway move and put a gloss on a gritty if unspectacular performance. But it yet again shows the value of Stopforth and Asante to us - they can't come back soon enough
3 very welcome points with some other results going in our favour
Final word on FCUM Friendly bunch Rather non-descript stadium, was expecting better after earlier reports Unfortunately for their fans, who are a noisy lot, the team is a shadow of what it used to be, seems to have stagnated and I can't see an upturn in their fortunes in the near future - pity as I'd like to see another fan-owned outfit do well
But, overall, a good day out especially as we won!

Thanks Raffles for the summary of the game. I was listening to the live commentary on the Club website and your report mirrors the impression conveyed by the commentators. Unfortunately I will miss the next few home games as I am away for a month but hopefully when I get back in February we will be riding high with Stopford and Ashanti playing.

The 2nd yellow looked harsh. I actually thought the referee had stopped play to give us a free kick! Problem is, that Green had taken one of their players out in the first minute, which the referee hadn't seen. He warned him but nothing else. He took the first opportunity to book him later. If he hadn't done the first challenge he wouldn't have got sent off. Green seemed wired. He had a right strop at someone (Livesey??) during the warm up. Took a bit of calming down. After being booked first half, he then had a go at Grand. He shouted a couple of times " you haven't f------- passed to me all game". He looked really wound up. At Hereford he had a rant at Waters for not catching an over hit pass. Got involved in a shoving match and later got booked. I appreciate he is keen to make up for lost time. However, having a go at team mates before and during games is hardly going to help team unity. This looks a close bunch of players. Not sure how he will fit in.

As I said in my main post, he has some way to go to adapt to the league and, maybe our team ethos Hopefully it will come over time but I'm sure his actions will not have gone unnoticed by Bern and Jonno Interestingly both didn't acknowledge him as he left the pitch after his sending off. I wonder.....
