Anyone following this? Some surprising results already, including Australia losing to Jordan. India looking better than expected as well - I always wonder why they don’t have a better team with their population. Also some unfamiliar teams in it with the competition having expanded. Interesting piece about the Yemen team on the BBC website. Sadly they’ve been beaten 5-0 today. www.bbc.co.uk/sport/football/46721547

There’s a tenuous Chester connection as well - former loan player Luke Woodland played for the Philippines against South Korea today.

I suspect the reason for India not being massively into football is a religious one. My mate must always wear his turban and amulet around his neck apart from when he showers and sleeps.

True, although you could say the same about Saudi Arabia and they normally reach the World Cup. Could be more down to cricket being the dominant sport.

We were absolutely pathetic against Jordan, one of the worst Australian performances of my lifetime. Never looked like scoring a goal. Desperately missing Mooy, Leckie and Arzani as well as any real Striker

Desperately missing Mooy, Leckie and Arzani as well as any real Striker With plenty of Aussies, Indians, Chinese etc over here, you’d think we’d give the tournament a bit more coverage. Certainly a better watch than the African Nations for my money.

They're really into football in parts of India. I think the northwest near Bangladesh, and in the Christian states like Goa. I might be wrong about the specifics, but it's majority sport in pockets of the country there. Of course it's completely dwarfed by cricket.

That's only 1.7% of the population Common misconception of Indians, majority are Muslim, then Christian, etc etc. I think football hasn't really taken off due to lack of facilities, chronic corruption within their country and the crippling levels of poverty within it. Plus Hockey and Cricket are by far and away their favourite sports.

The vast majority are Hindu but yeah Islam, and Christianity have a higher representation than Sikhism which you wouldn't expect from the outside looking in.

Soft penalty given for UAE in the opening game, and a Lebanon ‘goal’ against Qatar very harshly disallowed yesterday. Am I being cynical by wondering about the financial power of some of these Gulf States?

Am I being cynical by wondering about the financial power of some of these Gulf States? Absolutely not, this has been a question posed in the AFC for a long time now, even more so in the AFC Champions League. Australia play Palestine today (Tonight over here) surely we can’t get any worse than the loss against Jordan but we’ll see
