What a odd interview concerning Assante from Bernard Morley,He does not know when he will be fit and has no intention of asking him when he thinks he will be ready. This is not acceptable to us the fans.Yes I know he's always been a risk fitness wise and always will be.But this cannot go on indefinitely as he is a liability. this squad will never push on to get into play offs with him deciding whether he feels he can play or sit about taking his wages for nothing.Either get him professional help (shrink)or cut losses and get someone who is eager to play within limits to general fitness.Ps I am a big fan of Assante but enough is enough

Contender for worst post of the year right here. Top trolling. Really? Obviously you don't read some of the shite on here. For what its worth, I share the same views as the OP. Also detected a hint of sarcasm in Berns interview and he definitely looks bemused by the situation and wonder if they have been instructed from above (just a conspiracy theory on my part btw). Yes, Akwasi will make the difference between promotion or not. Yes he will score goals WHEN he plays. Yes we are a better team with him. BUT would you be happy if one of your workmates just came in when he decided he wanted to? would you be happy at being dropped to make way when he makes that decision? would you be happy if other squad members suddenly developed the same mindset? The Managers should know what is happening, they should be in control of the situation, they should decide whether his level of fitness warrants a start or a 10 mins sub appearance unless instructed otherwise by a medical professional.

That interview tells you that if you watch/read it. He knows that 90% of Asantes problem is mental, and in the interview he is expressing his frustration with that. A frustration that obviously is matched by us. What he is also saying is that asking and asking and posting and posting about it wont make him fitter quicker, and detracts from the hard work the rest of the players are putting in. Asante is a top player when fit, but is a sicknote. If the managers forced him to play when he feels he isn't fit he doesn't contribute, and only goes off sick longer. The club knew this when they signed him. If we get him fit for half of the games left he will score another 10 league goals. It is a big if, and a massive risk, but one that the board committed the club to when they signed him. What we do need is for Danny Elliott (huge excitement when we signed him, been very quiet), George Waring (shown he is capable previously but could hit a barn door currently), Matty Hughes (unplayable on his day in a pair though, not on his own) and Anthony Dudley (very highly rated by the managers, is very quiet in a lot of games) to step up and start scoring. If Asante ever then decides he wants to join in again then see that as a bonus. My prediction says play off depression.

On their day they would all get into any team in this League but none of them have really stepped up in Akwasis absence and therefore have left the door open for him to walk in when he feels he is ready.

He could possibly have given a better answer but to be fair Bern never tries to pull the wool over anyone's eyes and says it as it is. Sure its more of a case of they don't want to keep hounding him to come back as he will then feel pressured into returning too early. I think he definitely felt the pressure to return towards the end of last season and it was obvious he wasn't fit enough, so this time the ball is in his court.
For what it's worth, I don't think he'll be here next season. Nobody is in doubt over his quality but I can't see these managers taking another gamble over him. A striker who can only play half a season probably isn't financially viable for us, unless Stuart wants to keep stumping up his wages. But you also have to think about the disruption to the tactics etc - you want your strikers to play together regularly and build up that understanding, and also the midfielders supplying the chances get used to the sort of balls the strikers like to be fed. The constant changing up there probably doesn't do us any favours at times. The managers have also alluded to the fact that the constant line of questioning over Asante can affect the morale of the other strikers as it suggestions we can't win without him, which is then fed through to the fans who also feel the same way and it doesn't create a positive environment. The other side of that is that not many of the other strikers are really showing why they should be more regular, with the exception of Hughes. I think the managers will want someone they can rely upon for a whole season. Its a shame because the lad is absolute quality and he can win us the league if he plays 35 games, but he's hampered by his injuries and if he's not 100% then you can get the jog around performances from him rather than the powerhouse he should be.

I think its a great interview personally, its almost like he is treating him like a petulant child. He has obviously had enough of the arm around the shoulder routine which clearly hasn't worked and is now making all the attention focus on the rest of the team, which is the right thing to do.
As much as we love Asante and his talent is not in doubt, if he doesn't want to play then stop pandering to him, he will either go off and sulk and find another club or he will come back and score goals for us. Bern has put the ball back in his court.

Would love to hear from the lad himself met him once great bloke and loves our club all I hear is slight knock so can't play, if it's psychological then that's another story (hope not).

Always said he is worth the gamble. He comes with baggage, yes, but look at his stats this season, especially the goals per minutes played. www.bbc.co.uk/sport/football/national-league-north/top-scorersI don't really buy into his absences affecting morale/other strikers. Surely it's up to them to prove themselves when given the opportunity when Asante is unavailable. Sadly,I don't think we have a ten goal striker in the rest of the squad. Waring is a trier but in the Hobbo mould, Elliot hasn't shown much and although I like Hughes he's never going to be prolific. In the last two games, against decent opposition, none of them has got a sniff. Dudley is the enigma..a clever player and we should be structuring the team to get the best out of him. I don't believe Asante doesn't want to play, and we've seen there's no point trying to force him on the pitch when he isn't fit (or doesn't think he's fit). Certainly don't see any benefit in hounding him out of the club and IMO the managers are taking the right approach. And if he does leave, who would we bring in?

And one of Hughes, Elliott or Dudley needs to start stepping up in Asente's absence.

I personally don,t think Asante is any more skilfull than our other strikers . What he does have though is the ability to lose his markers giving him more time on the ball to put the ball in the net. Also what other industry would put up with one of it,s staff being on the sick so often

Also what other industry would put up with one of it,s staff being on the sick so often I'm sure you'll find plenty of professions with people on "on the sick" so often as you describe it. Depression, back injuries etc. The physical nature of football sets it apart from many jobs. The suggestion seems to be that Asante is skiving. Stopforth, on the other hand, who missed most of last season and is a serial drink driver appears to be regarded as an all round great bloke. Double standards me thinks. I accept his injury record isn't great but give the lad a break. This topic gets dusted down every time he misses three games. If he was playing 30 plus games a season he wouldn't be here, so I suggest we just get over it and some of the other strikers do their jobs.

Because the lad has scored 22 goals in 21 games for us and some of them have been substitute appearances. To describe him as a "liability" is absurd. It also really irritates me the way in which we get a thread like this every time Asante misses a couple of matches but nobody batted an eyelid for the first 2 months of the season when he was starting and scoring for fun.

One way of looking at it is his goal tally and the points that we have gained from them is more than all the other strikers on our books combined, take those points off and we would be lower mid table at best.

Asante, when fit, is a class act and too good for level six. He is here, warts and all, because of his well documented limitations. My concern is with the managers’ apparent inabilities to get a decent plan B for when he is not available. Before anyone accuses Asante of having a down tools attitude please recall Dudley post Christmas last season. Absolute wage thief!

Personally, I'd probably say it's a price worth paying for a striker of his quality, but there are valid counter arguments.

The strikers playing while he’s not 100 percent fit should be stepping up and making themselves undroppable. The fact that they aren’t isn’t down to the management team, Asante, the system being adopted or anything else other than the replacement strikers inability to put the ball in the net.

Are the other strikers really doing that badly? We're the highest scorers in the league, and yes a lot of that is down to Asante, but even without his 12, we've scored more than a lot of teams in the top half.
Even in this patchy run, we've been scoring at tough places like Kings Lynn, Blyth and Brackley, with and without Asante. I'd look more at the number we're letting in, and the fact that it's often the same type of goal!
