Interesting snippet from the board meeting minutes from January…
Finance Update –
Matt had circulated to the Board three accounts regarding the Profit and Loss Accounts year to date – December 2022 plus a mid-year reforecast (2022-2023) and a mid-year cash flow (2022/2023). Matt went through all the figures. He was concerned about the overspend on players costs plus the overspend on players food and travel. The Club needs to find ways to reduce the expenses.
Clearly the away results have justified the extra expense and we still have a great chance of promotion (although that will bring with it even greater travelling expenses), but we need to be big on the commercial side this year and next as it’s been pretty disappointing so far.

I thought that one of the clubs commercial partners helped with the additional travel/accomodation costs?
Always going to be pressures around 1st team costs at a fan owned club, but at the recent CFU meeting the club painted a hesitantly positive picture of the accounts including an increased reserve iirc.

Did we stay overnight at Darlo last weekend, does anyone know?
It must be costly to get a whole team and coaches in accommodation overnight, but it does seem like we've limited it to the really long treks.

Whether the situation has changed since those January board minutes I don’t know but if there is a sponsor for the trips and overnight stops that’s a huge positive for the club and, of course, for the coaching and playing staff.
The commercial side needs a lot of work this year, from the outside looking in all that seems to have happened since last summer is the matchday hospitality and sponsorship packages have doubled in price and we’ve had swathes of games with one out of three or no sponsors at all.

Seen a video of Cal Mac speaking at Nomads’ football do Saturday night. Pretty sure Cal said in an interview we were only doing Boston, Blyth and Kings Lynn overnight stays (over 3 hours travelling to them three so makes sense)

If we went up, I'd imagine these would increase, there must be benefits to doing it, otherwise we wouldn't. Same reasons why teams take internal flights

Boston 146 miles away. Kings Lynn 169 Blyth 200
If National League stays the same the following are all over 146 miles although some may take less than 3 hours.
Woking 204 Barnet 184 Eastleigh 218 Borehamwood 181 Southend 237 Bromley 249 Dagenham 212 Wealdstone 185 Maidenhead 178 Aldershot 215 Dorking 216 Yeovil 208 Gateshead 183 Torquay 247 Maidstone 241
All mileages are approximate.

Maidstone are already gone and it's not looking good for Torquay or Yeovil, so that could be three long trips out the way. Total respect to anyone from Yeovil who went all the way to Gateshead last night to watch them get stuffed 4-0.

Harrogate could go as well to give us another Northern team

The last cfu meeting related part of this too. Matt said the budget was due to be around a £60k loss this season. Hopefully a couple of large crowds in the final games and a home play off game will offset part of this. However, it does show we've likely overspent on players. Especially when we've probably got a 'free' keeper. We can't afford to lose £60k every season. Just consider where we'd be without boost the budget.

No way we could afford to stay overnight for all or most of those trips. Unless we lost a player or two. Unless marketing improves the income significantly.

We've spent what was an agreed loss based on the surplus from the prior year Agree it was an agreed loss following the previous years surplus. I understand why we've done that. However, we've spent in excess of expected break even figure. So it's not something we can repeat in future seasons. On that basis you could say we've overspent. A lot of people would think we've made a good profit this season, given that crowds have significantly increased and we had a decent cup run (financially).

With the exception of Gateshead, that pretty much lists the games I'll be looking to attend, far more than in the NLN, I really hope we get promoted back to the National League this season.

Always reminds me of someone on the Oldco DC who used to say about the southern-based fans complaining about regional leagues - if they were such good Chester fans they wouldn’t have left the area.
