We’re now getting into one of the most fun parts of the footballing year - seeing who other sides have released and speculating over which of the names we might look to try and sign. Here’s a website that rather helpfully lists each team’s retained list, updated as and when they’re published: thedeck.news/national-league-retained-lists-2024/Of the ones released thus far, Oldham and Fylde’s ought to be of particular interest to us.

Rhys Hughes and Charlie Jolley released at Tranmere. Yeh, both good players with different qualities... But not what we need IMO. I see them as Charlie Caton esque signings. I want the current Matt Rhead, Tom Denton equivalent...something like Richie Bennett from Scunthorpe (been on loan at Southport) or Marcus Carver (again, Scunthorpe and been on loan at Southport). Someone who is really good at holding the ball up, strong, good in the air and has an eye for goal. Not necessarily a 20 goal a season striker, but someone who can come in and allow 3 or 4 players to score 10+. ...and a hard hitting CDM. Someone who throttles players and lets them know they're there...but can also distribute the ball quickly to advance our forward thinking players. I genuinely believe Caton and Peers are good players at this level. I rate them both and I just think with a proper big lad next to them who can jump , win headers and is 'smart', would complement both of them perfectly. That is what I envisage in my head anyway. Not asking for much am i

Didn’t mind Jolley and a few years experience and filling out a bit would have done him some good. Would take him back here.
Rhys Hughes wasn’t great, no different to Daly.

I liked both Jolley and Hughes when they were here, but not convinced either are what we need right now. Dan Pike’s the one to look out for on that list, I’d say - ideal signing at right-back if Coates leaves.

Tom Crawford released by Hartlepool.

Tom Crawford released by Hartlepool. I can see this being the one that we announce pretty early to get season tickets moving that bit quicker. An academy legend and had a really good career so far higher up the pyramid and best mates with both Calum and Ewan Murray. GET IT DONE

Crawford a really tidy player but just the same type of player as Weeks and Glendon. Similar to someone else mentioning Mconville, we don't need any more luxury centre mids who'll get easily out-muscled.
From that Hartlepool list, much more interested in someone like Josh Umerah, massive unit of a striker, imagine he'd get another NL move though he's not really prolific

Don't forget that Tom Crawford has played 100 games in a higher division over the last 2 years and is 24 now. He'll have grown up as a player since he left us. He'd improve us as a team. I'm assuming Glendon goes. Crawford is a more complete player than him.
Jolley from Tranmere would improve the squad too. He might be a good addition, especially if Caton keeps getting injured. He can run with the ball and has pace.
Get a back to goal striker in along with a goalscorer and Caton and/or Jolley depending on formation and opposition, far better than what we had last season.
Sone supporters are thinking we need 11 bruisers. No. You need a combination of different types of players. Crawford would be an upgrade. That's usually good start in a signing. Especially if you know his character too.

People saying they wouldn’t want Sean McConville and Tom Crawford to sign. 😂 Weeks is under contract for next season, and I'd imagine Cal will renew *at least one of Glendon, Murray, Whitehouse. So I don't see how either of those two would fit in if we're trying to build a more athletic / phsyical team

This is more like it, been a quiet week on here! Can see the temptation for the likes of Jolley, Mcconville and Crawford All decent players undoubtedly, do I want them to return. Not for me, just a personal opinion based on things generally don't turn out so good second time around. Both Jolley and Crawford might have potential sell on values being young players, which might tick a box. Not sure about how many games each played or how many games missed by injury which would be a factor going by Callum's end of season statement.

So I don't see how either of those two would fit in unless want a repeat of this season Murray would be a squad player, and a good player to retain, assuming his wages are reasonable. Glendon, presumably, is a high earner. Different argument over him. He probably doesn't want to stay, and we probably need to let him go to clear space in the budget to sign the type of players we need. Unsure over Whitehouse. Depends on his wage demands. A midfield with a new holding midfielder, Weeks, Whitehouse and Crawford looks strong to me.

Crawford has no sell on value, he's 25 in a few weeks and already dropped out of the football league, had his chance there. Would be a very good player at our level though and a decent one for a mid table team in the league above. Nobody will pay a fee for him now though.
Jolley has had a few inury problems in the last year and comments from Tranmere fans seem to sugget he hasn't been the same player since, albeit two divisions up from where we are.

I'm not convinced Cal will suddenly go 442 with wingers though. We need a solid midfield. Last season we didn't actually have 4 players who could play together in a midfield. Not every player we have needs to start every game. That combination could interchange position and provide cover.

Convinced Whitehouse has gone. Not been seen anywhere near CH1 since second half of March. I was impressed with him when on loan from Scunthorpe, but once he signed properly for us, he just seemed to cruise through games, never really giving more than 80%.

Also fair comment Harry. Yes I don't think he will play two winger type players either, just the thought of a similar style midfield filled me with absolute dread! Oh for a Sam Aiston type player who could delivery the final ball, and Sir Cyril rising like a salmon, with a bullet header past the keeper!

Matt smith has just left Salford. From what I see looks like he is looking at options away from football and might be looking something part time. Good player. 24 goals last season and only 32

We definitely could link in with the university to offer pro’s a degree and part time football. We get berated for new ideas on here but you never know.
