He is annoying and a troll, but he makes a fair point that there's no record of anyone opposing or expressing doubt about the contract at the time. Everyone either agreed with it, or had doubts but kept them quiet. That means that if you believe the board were wrong or irresponsible to offer him the contract, you basically have to accept that you went along with it at the time and perhaps as fans we've all learned a lesson here.
Ultimately, the contract has really hurt us. Assuming McCarthy is now sacked, not only will we need to come up with the funds to pay him off, but it means we've also delayed the dismissal of a failing manager, leaving the new man playing catchup with a squad he inherits off someone else. It raises the question of what sort of contracts we should be handing out, and what types of managers we can realistically go for. You might say it should be one year maximum, but can we attract the best possible candidates doing this?
Tough decisions to be made, and perhaps some understanding needed among supporters.

To play devil's advocate Lobster, anybody who had dared to express any doubt over any decision made within the club had been systematically removed from devachat over a period of nearly 5 years before that, so it had ceased to be a fair reflection of feeling amongst the supporter base.
I personally had no issues with the contract when it was signed, though, however had I known the financial implications of getting out from under it, I feel I would have been unnerved.
Would it not be possible to offer a manager a 2 year contract with a performance clause? Something along the lines of no home win for 9 months and your out. Surely any self respecting candidate wouldn't be phased by something reasonable like that?
One thing I've seen written by many is 'It's a results business', while the bloke certainly deserved the boot on that rationale, moreover its actually entertainment business. That's what McCarthy, and far too many football managers in General, seem to forget when justifying these awful tactics.
