Always sad to hear a ground is to be demolished. Could have been the Deva if it wasn't for the great work of the CFU. Nene Park

What an absolute waste. In its day it was the best ground in non league. Visited this stadium in 2005 when we drew 1-1 with Rushden. What a tidy little ground it was too. Unfortunately though, we all know of the demise of R&D and Kettering found it far too expensive. It's sad, of course, but also it's better for it to be demolished. No worse sight than a disused football ground crumbling around itself. We know that all too well. You only have to look at the likes of Nene Park, McCain Stadium (Scarborough) and feel sad.

So sad, the rise and fall of a village club. I lived in Rushden in the eighties when Irthlingborough Diamonds were just a village club in the midland counties league(for some years I played for their rivals Irthlingborough United). It was the development of junior teams that first got the Doc Martens boot manufacturer (can't remember his name) involved with sponsoring the club. It grew from there as he became more and more involved. The merger with Rushden took them several steps up the pyramid and the rest is well known.
It all went sour as his business started to find life difficult and he switched a lot of his production to the far East. The local paper lambasted him for doing so and he got so much criticism for making redundancies that he walked away, totally disillusioned his love of the area destroyed. From then on there was only one way - the club had no real tradition of local support and was built on sand.
Still sad, .... part of my younger days fading away.

It was a proper, traditional non-league ground, but all good things must come to an end.

It was a proper, traditional non-league ground, but all good things must come to an end. Nothing of the sort. It was a tidy modern stadium whilst football was being played there but R&D was a disaster waiting to happen once Griggs got fed up - another in a long line of bankrolled non league clubs that went to the wall and I'm sure there will be more to come. Remember Hornchurch? They were the strangest case of this.

Remember going in 2000, first away game since relegation and was surprised at how smart the ground was at the time, especially compared to some of the league grounds I had visited the season or two before.

For this, see Fylde, Forest Green, Eastleigh, Salford et al when the sugar daddies get bored.
When people want CFC to blow the reserve on a forward that may or may not work out, please re-read the above article.

You could bracket Fleetwood in with that lot and they're still going strong, as are Crawley.

Dale Vince, for example, how is it in his interests to plough millions into Forest Green Rovers year after year. How does it help his business, which ironically is all about sustainability?

Shower of fools then, not in the Guildhall! Like you say, many of these clubs will not survive past the next decade. Some will, and good luck to them. We should always live within our means, I owe it to my children for them to enjoy (maybe wrong choice of word?) Chester FC for years to come, no matter what level we play at, we should be proud to be self sustainable. On a side note, that trip to R&D was a real eye opener regards how stadiums could be, although as a club/ground, it was about as traditional as a fajita in a chip shop!

We lost that game 2-0 and their second was scored by player called Jackson I think, Rushton had paid £180k for him and he was a right tosser. Soon went down the pan. He played at Stafford a couple of years later when his career was fading and he got a lot of stick from the travelling Chester fans.

Justin Jackson and his mate Duane Darby both gestured at us that day, one of them rather dubiously claimed that as he'd just signed for them he thought he was celebrating in front of the home end after scoring.

It was by the standards of the day a magnificent set up .I used to go there in their early days in the Conference ( saw Aiden Newhouse play there one night for Sutton Utd ) Also watched England non-league team play Wales there. Unfortunately as his business interests started to struggle Max Griggs told the club they would have to stand on their own two feet (fair play he had invested millions into the project ) & we can no all see the result. The Chester F C model is the right one !

Ha. I always remember Jackson saying that after the game, the fact is he started a load of trouble off that day with police smashing people with batons, him and Darby were the difference that day and most of the season. Good players but absolute morons. Think I remember being on the Hipkiss and witnessed a Chester mini bus pulled over with a lad getting out and having a punch up with some locals.
