OK lets all admit it, we have probably "Googled" a few of the potential managers across a few sites to get what we think are the "facts". If we believe only 50% of what we see is true even then one would be hard pressed to feel comfortable about awarding a contract on £40/50 k/year. This brings me to my serious point and that is due diligence should carried out in professional manner to reduce the risk of employing a manager who talks a good game at the interview but is in fact going to end up as another casualty and more to the point - Chester FC in the Conference North.
So what is the due diligence that should be carried out on a preferred candidate. There is the obvious personal stuff carried out at club level i.e. criminal record, credit checks and child protection etc., to make sure the candidate is a "fit and proper" person. I am not suggesting that any of the media guesses of potential candidates are likely to fail these checks, its just something you have to do. The big deal is how to get to the roots of a managers professional competences and experience (in addition to UEFA "A" or "B").
As we all know, in football and especially in the lower leagues there is a merry go round of "retreads" all looking for the next badge they can kiss. So there are lots of real facts out there just waiting to be teased out from those in the know. So my next point is, is there anybody at the club who has the contacts to be able to talk off the record to the people in the game that matter?
Quite obviously I don't know the answer to that, but to protect the club from another failure somebody at the club needs to get in to a "smoke filled room" with the wiseguys and not rely totally on the interview process.
