Why was he at the club offices earlier today ? If he returns I will never go to a game again.

Kevin Ratcliffe never quite got enough credit I don't think. He worked wonders with us. Narrowly missed out on the play offs in 95/96, before finally getting there in 96/97. Chris Priest wrongly sent off in the second leg killed off any hopes of reaching a Wembley final. 97/98 wasn't a disaster either, but then there was the well documentaries financial struggles of 98/99, where again, he got a threadbare squad playing well and guided us to mid table. Slow start in 99/00 following the arrival of Smith and that clown only had one thing on his mind, to try his hand at management at the first possible chance. Very unfairly treated by the madman. I think it's good news that he's still around the club. Let's not forget his legendary status as Everton captain. He still is Everton's most successful skipper. Recently went to a Q&A session with him at Goodison Park. Only when you heard him speaking and talking of his history did you realise how much of a colossal figure he was. I liked the bloke and still do.

Think he didn't help himself with that very dubious clause in his contract that saw him claim £200K off the club. A shame it had to end so acrimoniously having served the club well.

Worked wonders on a shoestring but consigned to our history now. Would be nice to see him watching us - I believe he still lives in Ewloe - but very much doubt he's looking at management.

He played attractive football and achieved the last thing of note with Chester in the Football League by getting us in the play-offs in 1997, but I've always felt the perception of him working wonders on a shoestring budget is a bit exaggerated. Yes the club was in administration in 1998-99 with wages not being paid, but prior to that he was able to splash out £50,000 to bring Gary Bennett back for example and some of the reported wages of key players in that period were anything but low.

I've seen him at a few games lately, assisted above I don't think he got the credit he deserved for his time in charge of us bit holding the club to ransom for the cash did leave a sour taste in the mouth at the end.

Perhaps the board are using Kevin to help with the recruitment process, as someone else has said, there is perhaps a lack of football knowledge on the current board. Can never understand why ex contracted employees are vilified for seeking their contractual rights on leaving. If the contract was unfavourable to the club blame the club not the employee. Always thought Kevin Radcliffe was one of the better managers over the time I have watched Chester.

I cannot understand your hostility Whopper 3 - totally unjustified. KR was a good manager who played an entertaining style and helped the club out financially before being completely undermined by the idiot Yank.

Wouldn't that have been down to Guterman or Smith though? Doubt anyone would turn down that type of money tbf. Guterman. Contract he signed shortly before Guterman left had a clause where if he couldn't work with the owner he could leave with full pay. He left within a month. When SV took over both Ratcliffe and Barrow were still owed money. Barrow said he wouldn't do anything to harm CFC, and walked away with next to nothing. I believe Ratcliffe held on for every penny he was owed. Of the two who probably needed the money more at that time? That's why there may be some bitterness towards him.

If only we had a reserve side now, it would help with the lack of fitness issues.

As a football man he was second to none. Superb defender and did do a great job with us as a manager. Unfortunately my crossings with him as a person don't leave me with the same positive outlook.
