I noticed last weekend that Shrewsbury are top of L1 and Shaun Whaley is playing for them. Very young when he came into our team but he always looked a bit of a rabbit in the headlights, to the extent where it was hard to even argue that he should have started ahead of Rapley. He's had a funny career, gone in and out of non-league a few times and doesn't seem to score many, but he must be doing something right.
Tom McCready is another one. A brief loan spell here in the first season after reformation and I can't really remember anything about him, but played for Exeter last season and is now in our division with Fylde.
Any other former Chester players that didn't look much cop here but went on to have good careers?

Chris Holroyd is the one that jumps out to me. Thought he was a neat and tidy player with some potential in his brief spell with us but amazed he played as high up the pyramid as League One.

Sean McConville surprised me. He was neat and tidy for us - but not exactly the sort of player to strike fear into the opposition. Now he's a regular in a side battling for promotion in the division above!

Walters every time, that lad has fantastic.
Dropping the Prem to the lower leagues and climbing back up there, some achievement that. Not many would be able to do that.

George Elokobi is the stand out one of these for me, looked like a Vaughan money laundering project when he was playing for us then a few years later was linked with moves to The Prem and played consistently at a much higher level for years.

How could I forget big George!!! There were many times I doubted his ability to play at our level, never mind the top flight!

Surprised nobody has mentioned Jack Macreath who played once for us away at Woodley Sports then was never seen again..
Now at Wrexham, played for Grimsby, Macclesfield, and even Bury in League One for a little while last season!

Rob Hopley as well was another one, Young signing him in the Evo Stik Div 1 North, then got rid. Then went on to be a fantastic goal scorer for Colwyn Bay in the Conference North over several years, whereas Wilde never got a look in at that level.

John Murphy for me. A proper footballing carthorse. Did ok for us and scored a few goals but went and had a really good few years with Blackpool.

Richard Hope sticks in my mind, didn’t last particularly long here and I didn’t rate him, yet he went on to have a few good years at Shrewsbury after that. Had a respectable lower league career even before us to be fair.

Michael Rose went on to have a long and varied career in the football league and may still be playing? I never saw anything special in him?

Ben Davies. I actually don't think he played that often in the Conference winning season with Carden, Carey, Smith/Twiss being in the midfield three. His set pieces were hopeless and yet he played in the Championship for Derby. Still, he was a hard worker like Sir Jon Walters.

Alan Reeves - poor when he was here but went onto play nearly 400 games at a higher level and of course there was Lee Dixon.

Danny Collins. He was ok when he was with us though so I'm not sure he exactly fits in with this thread though?

I always thought he was a cracking player, lacked physicality but he was young and was only going to get better. He divided opinion but his champions were ultimately proved right.

Danny Collins. He was ok when he was with us though so I'm not sure he exactly fits in with this thread though? Maybe Danny Collins (mark one) pre conversion into a Premier League standard Centre back. Lets not forget when we signed him he seemed a very average non league striker who would never make the step up from the Welsh pyramid. Whoever saw the potential in him as a defender must take a fair bit of credit for his stellar career. How about Neil Cutler who went from sharing the goalkeeper shirt with Wayne Brown in a mid table Division Four side to appearing for Aston Villa and Stoke City?

His move to Villa was one of the oddest transfers I've ever known, and he actually ended up making a brief appearance for them in a televised game. Can't remember who their first choice keeper was at the time but he took a knock, and as they were three or four up at the time against Middlesbrough they decided to take see out the game with Cutler in goal. I seem to remember even in though few minutes he made a right hash of a backpass but got away with it! Another obscure one is Ryan Williams. Made a couple of Cheshire Cup appearances for us, went on to do well for Morecambe and earn a move to Brentford, and now playing in Canada.

Painful as it was, Gary Bennett's success in the period after being released by Chester and going to Wrexham in 1992 was hard to ignore. He'd hardly been a failure at Chester (and he had scored the vital winner for us at Stoke just before he left) but he never seemed anything like as prolific for us as he was across the border where it felt like he was finding the net every week. He ended up being sold by the Goats for big money to Tranmere who were in the second tier at the time.
