I regularly read comments on here and DC1 about how it would be great to go through a couple of rounds of the Cup because of the prize/gate money and think back to the time when we all wanted to reach the 3rd round of the Cup just for the chance to play against and maybe turn over a big club.
The finances didn't come into the thinking, that was for the club secretary and board to worry about.
One of the downsides of being a supporter owned club is that the practicalities cloud the romance which is a pity.

I've always looked at the money aspect of it to be honest, it's a huge advantage if it ever does happen with us as we know the money is 100% going back into the Club, any other owners can pocket any money for their own ends which is exactly what Mr V did.

Romance and finance are not mutually exclusive, as any divorcee will tell you. Football is no exception. Just look at Cambridge United less than three years ago, from near to on the rocks to extreme wealth as the result of a 0-0 draw v Manchester United and an Old Trafford replay.

Who doesn't want to "Sing their hearts out for the lads" at Stamford Bridge, Old Trafford, Anfield, maybe Wembley? But I do agree because as we all know, the gap between the top flight and our level has become a vast chasm financially and the overall perception that The FA Cup is ruled by the TV and PL is true. We are not alone but our own situation as being short of finance, it's obvious that we want a pay day or two so that we can compete in the National League. Every season we should be 'Up for the Cup'

In the dying embers of McCarthy's reign I was going to post something along the lines of this post myself, but never got round to it.
In recent years I think we've become quite a boring club to support, and of all emotions boredom has never really been one I'd associate with Chester. We've become very grounded and pragmatic, and there's been little room for romance or idealism. I think sadly it's been a consequence of having the word 'budget' drilled into us by the last two managers.
As has been said, romance and financial awareness don't need to be mutually exclusive though, and it is good for supporters to be conscious of their club's finances. Hopefully Bignot can just get us enjoying our football again, and if he does, the economic side should take care of itself.
