Seems to be a dreadful atmosphere at Wembley, mind you, it's a dreadful game.
I know they have to play there because of Wembley's financial commitments etc but it's the sort of game crying out to be played in the provinces e.g Anfield, Old Trafford, St James' to give others a chance to see the national team. The sense of occasion by nature of the rarity would certainly improve the atmosphere and by implication help the team.
Other countries do, Germany, Spain, France but I'm certainly not holding my breath that the FA will change their stance so we'll end up with meaningless friendlies as the scraps offered to those in the sticks

Agree completely. Wembley's a total white elephant.
And yes, it's an awful game. Why are England always so slow and lethargic? It's the complete opposite of what the Premier League is like.

And that bloody band! Someone shove their trumpets up their arses! They kill the atmosphere.

Can’t be bothered. Watched the first half then decided to go up. Prefer non-League footy any day of the week.

Of course I am now delighted that we have qualified, but football further up the hierarchy is nothing like it used to be. Proud to be non-League!

Not sure I'm delighted. I sometimes think I'd enjoy tournaments more if we didn't have to through the whole "come on England" process. If they're going to play like that it will be tedious beyond belief. Slovenia should've had a penalty in the first half and Joe Hart had to make a great double save. England only won because Slovenia realised towards the end that they'd need to win to have any chance of second place and that led to their keeper panicking and making a mess of a rushed throw out.
A truly terrible match. So flat, so slow, so boring. England are very hard to love.

Watched Scotland instead. Superb game and a cracking Hampden ROAR. Much more enjoyable to watch Scotland when that absolute prick Celtic captain isn't playing.

Probably a case of being careful what you wish for, but I miss the days when England would have a genuinely strong opponent in their qualifying group - the sort of games like Italy in qualifying for the 1998 World Cup and Germany for 2002 which got the nation pumped up in the period between major tournaments and also meant England could ill-afford to drop points in their other games. Although it was good to play Scotland again this time, for the most part in recent years it has been a fairly unexciting set of opponents for England in qualifying - games we usually win, but without the conviction some expect and the early exits from recent major tournaments hardly give cause for optimism.

I watched Scotland last night instead of England. I don't think I've enjoyed an England game since the 4-0 win over Croatia ar Euro 2004. Since then it's been tedious stuff. Euro 2016 was pretty much it for me and even though Big Sam's appointment gave me hope, his sacking which ultimately lead to the Pizza Hut man taking charge was the final nail in the coffin. How a poor club manager can get walk into the England job without any real managerial credentials is beyond me. An FA yes-man, his face fits obviously. Despite England's qualification, I can't find myself to be happy about it. More ineptitude at a major tournament and no doubt the hooligans will be out in force in Russia. Not looking forward to it one bit. Oh, and there's the complete media over-reaction in the build up to it.

Can't remember the ;last time, I watched an England game. They are the Aston Villa of World Football. The only thing that is certain is that they will be on the plane home after the group stages.

Speaking of the World Cup Qualifiers, I see Iceland are almost there. They just need a home win against Kosovo which they should get. They're actually a consistently strong side, as are Northern Ireland.
The best story of the qualifiers though is Syria. War-torn nation, no funding towards their team and playing home games in Malaysia, but they could still qualify. They'll need to win in Australia though and would then face the fourth placed team in North America, which could possibly be the USA. Imagine that - a US v Syria playoff for a place in Russia!

Never liked Southgate after he took the pizza ad money after missing a massive penalty for England. Good manager ~ no, yes man ~ yes. We've won 2 knock out games in WC since we won it in 1966.

As a 9 year old watching that semi final (being allowed to stay up late to watch it was a real treat!) I remember that penalty miss and being absolutely pig sick the next day in primary school. I wasn't alone! Ever since then I've had some weird vendetta against Southgate but as you get older, you look at the wider picture. To sum it up he was an average player, a trrrible club manager, got the U21's through a few group games in their respective tournaments and yet still get the job of England Head Coach. I always thought the best English manager should get the top job. Sven & Capello came and went, and the decline has been there ever since. Sad really. As a domestic competition, it's the best in the world. A small country holding 4 (pretty much 5) professional leagues and a pyramid of hundreds of semi-pro clubs is something we can be proud of. Just a shame that the game at the top has been killed by money. It'll all come to a head at some point. Could be many years down the line but there will be a big crash at the top of the game at some point.

Syria can bow out with their heads held high but the USA failing to make it must be one of the biggest surprises of the lot given they've been one of the dominant teams in their qualifying section for the last 30 years. Think it's the first World Cup since 1986 they won't be at.

Watched a bit of the Australia v Syria game on YouTube. The spirit and organisation the Syrians showed was incredible, they were completely exhausted by the end but still almost won the tie on away goals with a free kick that hit the post right at the end.
Surprised the USA missed out, but then again it's a mess of a country at the moment and it must be hard to have much pride in representing them. Nice to see a new name in the World Cup in Panama, although they were helped by the awarding of goal that didn't cross the line!
Looking likely that Peru might make their first World Cup since 1982 as well. You'd expect them to beat New Zealand in the playoff.

Dutch failed again as well. Saw them play Wales in Cardiff a couple of years ago and apart from Robben (who must be close to 40) they were pretty average.

Also shows how lucky England got with their group that Switzerland won 9 out of their 10 games and will still have to go through a playoff.

This is what's the World Cup is about to me. Not England, not Messi, not Ronaldo, just small countries getting onto the world stage for the first time and going absolutely hysterical about it.
National holiday in Panama today, I believe.

Panama qualifying for their first World Cup with a "goal" that didn't go in and one of their subs warming up deciding to absolutely twat a loose ball that had gone out for an opposition throw-in high into the stands in the closing stages...

Think the ref thought it was rugger and awarded a "penalty goal"

You never heard John Motson celebrate England scoring like that then again England havent achieved much over the years
