I was at the Hull away game. I think Sam Aiston scored for us as well in a 1-2 win. Boxing or New Year's Day?

The thing I remember most about that match was the weather....unbelievable winds in Hull and coming home along the M62. It was Boxing Day 1998. This was Sam Aiston's second coming on loan, I think we also had Mick Conroy on loan too. Surely 2 of the best loanees we have had in the fairly recent memory?

I didn't go to that game but I was at Rotherham's Milmoor on a freezing cold Tuesday night a couple of weeks earlier to see the aforementioned Big Mick Conroy bag a brace in a 4-2 win. One of my most enjoyable away games with the Blues - I was 12 at the time.

Talented enough to challenge for play offs at least but off the field troubles put a stop to that. Two cracking loanees mentioned there. I'd add Alex Smith too, classy little left footer

Yeah, I really enjoyed large parts of that season too despite the off the field issues.
It was the first season I was going to most of the away games (I would have been 13) and we had some amazing highs and some major lows! From the sublime of beating Port Vale, the trip to Sunderland, great away wins at Rotherham, Torquay and Scarborough to the lows of Cardiff away in the Cup and the potential "last ever game" v Swansea.
As mentioned above we had some really, really talented players. Beckett, Smith, Aiston, Conroy, Priest et al plus an inspiration if sadly short lived captain in Andy Crosby.
What a strange period in Chesters history it was and things were about to get a lot odder...

That season was the first of me going to aways on the Hipkiss. Enjoyable campaign despite everything else
We seem to draw a lot of games 1-1 I remember
Also the season we played Brighton live on Sky, I seem to remember it being a particular thing such as 'non league day', anyone recall?
Edit: something like United Colours of Football or something like that?

It was a designated "Fans United" game when we conceded a last minute penalty equaliser after Big Mick had put us in front on the stroke of half time. Friday night live on Sky, all-ticket on police advice and about 4,000 there including fans from loads of other clubs across the country (even across Europe - the German airhorn blowers).

Yeah, the weather played right into my favour though. I had taken my girlfriend (now my wife) to that game. I remember the car being blown all over the place on the M62 on the way back so suggested we stop in a travel lodge for the night, Hartshead moor services I think. Very romantic ;-)

That was better than my Dad and I's experience of Hartshead Moor services that night....my Dad had to stop there to put water in for the screen wash and I still have the memory of him (and the car) being blown from side to side trying to fill it up! Oh the memories! At least we got the 3 points though ey!

She also remembers that we sat next to Wayne Brown in the stand so I wonder who was in goal that night? Neil Cutler?

Only three subs allowed on the bench in those days as well, so few teams bothered naming a sub keeper.

One of the best saves I've ever seen at the Deva was Neil Cutler v Mansfield.
Their lad hit an overhead kick which was heading straight into the top corner, Cutler got to it from out of nowhere.
Decent keeper, went to Aston Villa after his spell with us.

Just checked my "98-99" season review and Cutler and Brown both started 23 league games that season. Does anyone remember Matt Conkie? He was on the bench at Sunderland! I saw him playing for Winsford earlier this season alongside a Jonathon Jones, could it be the lad who played for us that season. I reckon yes but stand to be corrected! I do recall Wayne Brown warming up by the Chester fans during the 6-0 defeat to Cardiff looking quite happy he hadn't got the nod that day. Could have been during the legendary conga in the away end on the terrace in the second half.

Even though we had our massive coaching team of.... The American nightmare himself, Scott cooper. Dave Fogg, Gary Shelton and Sean Reid. Swear Dan Brooks was munching on a KFC down on the bench! Regards that Hull game, remember it well with the supermarket behind the away end. Hull were plumb bottom at the time and we had Sam Aiston ripping teams apart, he was a player. Always remember that big away end hull that looked quite empty but certainly made a noise when they wanted.

Jonathan Jones is an accountant now, I believe. He was at some business event that someone I work with went to recently. Could be a semi-pro footballer as well I suppose, although he'd be pushing 40 now.

The Jones for Winsford was a striker and I thought it may be him given the Conkie connection. Watching lots of Welsh 2nd, 3rd and lower divisions plus a bit of North West Counties I've seen a few ex-Chester players appear in odd settings over the past few years!

Some memories from that seasonThe attacking display in the 4-2 win at Scarborough was one of my highlights that season, Rod Thomas being unstoppable that day in his last game (I think) for the club.

Chester v Swansea Youtube
Remember this being our 'last game' at the time. Spoke to a lad who came from London who was doing the 92 grounds and came because it might be his last chance. Was a worrying time as a fan, but it was nothing compared to a few years later, at least the football was good. Loved our away kit that season too, still have it. Although that sponsor didnt half catch the nipples on a cold day
