just watched MB interview after kiddy game he stayed calm but stated that the national league needs a full time team to compete and chester would be this from monday with an extra day of training whilst it must be applauded he is getting to grips with the situation as best he can with squad, budget etc can he do this ? of course we dont know the content of the players contracts but you would assume it states they should be committed to a certain number of days training on specified days hence giving them chance to find other work on a part time contract we know of course tom shaw and craig mahon have part time coaching roles elsewhere and im sure the forum knows what other players do outside of the club. i would imagine in order to bring the players in for extra days training they would need new contracts AND MORE MONEY to compensate for lack of earnings elsewhere and as we struggle as a club financially already where is the money coming from should this happen? thoughts ?

I can't really speak for football contracts as I don't have any experience but in general employment, when you have a primary job, that employer can reasonably expect that you are available when they require you and any other part time roles will have to fit into the needs and demands of the primary employer.
Personally, I can't help but feel that footballers get far to easy a ride, good pay, a bit of light training and a few hours on a Saturday afternoon. It would be nice to see them actually have to go and do 50-60 hours a week for dreadful employers and low pay like many of the supporters. Only then would they appreciate that spending a days wages to go and watch that shower of shite yesterday leaves most supporters feeling a bit peeved!

The extra traveling would cause some problems though.
We've got players who live in Sheffield, Rotherham, Derby etc. Not sure whether traveling expenses are included, or explicit, in their contracts. An extra 160 miles once or twice a week would have an impact on their net money.
As some have said earlier, the contract wording will affect how the change is implemented. We'd all love the right players to leave, allowing us to replace them. Not sure we'll get that lucky.

It's a difficult balancing act - in the previous leagues we managed to stay part-time and have the cream of the crop in terms of available players for that. We could go properly full-time and, due to our finances, struggle with discarded youngsters and "last payday" journeymen, but we currently have some sort of mash-up of the two as it stands.

I applaud the sentiment but it’s naive at best, foolish at worst. The players signed contracts.........and Bignot was told the situation at interview. Said he was happy the terms. This could prove divisive among the players when spirit will be key in a dogfight which we are definitely well in.
I thing MaGuire has to bear a great deal of responsibility for our plight. CEO who has Football club experience and advises our volunteer board. He’s given out shed loads of crap advice.......JM renewed contract, players on f/t wages but p/t commitment and I remain worried about Bignot s appointment. He lost the dressing room at Grimsby. Until he has secured replacements he can’t afford to lose the dressing room here, goal difference could be crucial.

There's reasons why he has been removed from all his previous positions at other clubs. He has brought some sponsorship our way, no doubt. Beyond that though his management has been dreadful and has/will cost the club a lot of money over the next year and a half. Will that outweigh what he brings in sponsorship wise? How, under the circumstances that last season ended, could he/the club allow JM to sign up players on two year contracts. That is the most criminal aspect of his dealings so far. Does our club not learn anything about contracts?

Please be specific in your other allegations, what 'crap advice' specifically has Maguire given? As for McCarthy, he was appointed and his contract extended by the board, not the CEO. Answers please, because otherwise you will confirm my suspicion that you are just a moaning old BS-er

Surely these players have rights as an employee like any other person though? I spoke to Bignot after the game yesterday but it's all well and good saying "bye-bye" to any players that can't commit to full time, but they have signed contracts that state that they are here until the end of the season at least- therefore we will have to pay any players off that can't commit- and where is this money coming from? We're in a mess.

Thinking ahead but I wonder if Bignot will order the players in for training on Christmas Day this year, ahead of the potentially vital home game against Guiseley on Boxing Day. Disciplinarian managers often seem to believe in doing that (Mark Wright definitely did so at least once) and I doubt as things stand Bignot would trust this crop of players to prepare properly if at their homes.

The statement made by Bignot may well cause more trouble than its worth the players signed contracts stating the working days. I am pretty sure the more mature staff will not put up with his demands. I have heard that they may be contacting the PFA to see where they stand. To me this spells Trouble when we need everyone to pull together at this difficult time. I think Bignots big statement may be a big mistake.🤐🤐👎

I'm assuming the mid-way position was due to finances and that we couldn't afford a 100% f/t squad. I suspect we still can't. MB was expressing his opinion immediately after a dire performance, but he is not in control of contracts or employment at the club. The way things might work would be to ask players to commit to 1 or 2 extra training sessions per week on a voluntary basis, and perhaps for a set period of time. I suspect that enough would do this to make it worthwhile, and without it eating up any more cash we need for new signings (although perhaps some kind of end of season bonus if we stay up could also be considered, one where those players who have volunteered to work unpaid would get extra). That would deal with contract of employment issues, but I agree it isn't ideal.

Haven't at least a few players got other coaching jobs (e.g.Mahan, Shaw, Hannah). They're possibly not going to be able to commit to an extra day.

As for or the rest, they purport to be professionals and I find it surprising that given the such dire levels of performance that they would not want to come in for 1 or 2 extra training session a week, whatever their contracts may say. I wasn’t aware that any had second jobs in the traditional non league mould, such as plumbers or electricians etc preventing this. Whilst it is reported that some "players" are allegedly whining about it already suggests some have a very poor attitude, and the quicker we are rid of them the better. Whilst I am probably reading too much into this , interesting that a pair of new posters were on here within minutes of each other this afternoon, implying player opposition to Bignots tougher regime and their contractual position.

I'm sure he is a nice lad, and in terms of talent he is way above any level I played at, but he is never going to be a professional footballer.

The board are essentially fans with little or no experience of running a football club and I suspect they turn to him as he at least has experience in the running of a football club albeit it with questionable success. In making such a critical decision as Mr McCarthy’s contract extension, surely the Board would have consulted with the serving CEO and sought his professional opinion, given the potential financial implications to the club if things went wrong (e.g. Burr)? In my view, the Board would have been negligent not to have involved the CEO in this decision , and if they did, why would it be unreasonable for the fans of an apparently fans- run club to know MMs professional recommendation ?

Very interesting read. Suggests there were some very paly deals done in the summer between JM and some of these players that Bignot is challenging. Sounds like he is challenging them to commit to the cause or bugger off. Will be interesting to see the reaction.

They are not typical employment contracts that have fixed days and have them contracted to a certain number of days training each week. The contracts in place are designed to meet the needs of the football club when they arise, such as changes in dates for games etc. Adding an extra days training won’t affect this, although it won’t be ideal for all of them. “But this is the next step that we have to take as a football club.”

Would be disappointed to lose Shaw if he can’t commit to the new regime, but it’s got to the point where I wouldn’t lose any sleep over any player leaving tbh, except maybe Astles.
At the end of the day all players come and go, but the priority is to keep the club in this division. I’d rather go down fighting with young inexperienced players busting a gut over overpaid journeyman simply going through the motions.

Could spell the end for the likes of Shaw, Mahon and Hannah then... Craig Mahon is my favourite Chester player, possibly my favourite since reformation, but I would be quietly relieved if he left by mutual consent. Every season it's been "I'm looking to put last year behind me, this is my season" and then he's out for two thirds of the season. We can't afford to have presumably one of our biggest earners out for so long, and we've got another season and a half of this.

We need to be better when doing due diligence regarding looking at player's injury history. We lose too many games to player injury. I'd be interested to see how many games Craig Mahon has missed since we first signed him. It must be 2 in 5.

Assuming that the CFC unofficial site's stats are correct - 2013/14 - Mahon played or was an unused sub in 83% of league matches (excluding 5 matches when out on loan at Fylde where he made 6 appearences) 2014/15 - Mahon played or was an unused sub in 96% of league matches 2015/16 - Mahon played or was an unused sub in 91% of league matches 2016/17 - Mahon played or was an unused sub in 63% of league matches 2017/18 - Mahon played or was an unused sub in 93% of league matches to date. Prior to joining CFC Mahon made over 130 appearences in three seasons for Vauxhall Motors.
