Ever since we got back in the Conference, a recurring problem is that we've had a captain who is either out of form, regularly out injured or both.
It started in our first season at this level when Horan was retained as captain, but this level was probably a little to much for him and he was soon dropped and didn't feature a great deal that season. Since then, we've had Sharps struggling in the twilight of his career, and the less said about Luke George last season the better. The closest we've had to a reliable and consistent captain was probably Matt Brown, and he always looked like he was playing a bit above his level too.
Now we've got McCombe, who has already been dubbed 'Captain Marvel'. That's probably a little harsh, but it's fair to say he hasn't wowed us so far.
If the captain is playing badly, it makes it very difficult for him to gee up the rest of the team, especially the younger players. In the worst case, they end up being dropped and the manager faces the unenviable and potentially morale-affecting decision of stripping him of the armband.
With Kane being named England captain recently, I've heard some pundits suggest that the best thing to do is often to simply give your best performing player the armband. With us at the moment, that's unquestionably Ryan Astles.

I actually believe McCombe is a decent defender. Problem is that he isn't necessarily a good partner for Astles. It stops us pushing the back four up the pitch. That leaves a gap between them and the midfield. Giving the opposition a lot of space, which is a problem given our lack of pace.
The 4231 change we made during Saturday might help us close teams down better.

Given the utter shambles of the team I would suggest a new captain is in order as weneed some strong leadership on the field and McCombe isnt giving it.
I would make Shaw captain and start him every week at this point.

I would make Shaw captain and start him every week at this point. I agree, Shaw would be my choice. Has the qualities and experience required and you know he will set the tone getting about the pitch, putting challenges in and encouraging the lads. He is one of very few who actually play for the shirt as well.

The Shaw situation is possibly the biggest balls-up of all we made in the summer. Was never going to work, that. Having been lucky to keep his job, McCarthy should surely have realised he needed an experienced assistant alongside him. Depleting an already thin squad by taking a key performer out of it to be a rookie presence on the dugout, I don't get how we ever thought that was going to work myself. We're now in the embarrassing position of having to backtrack on that and accept that we need him in the team, even though he's not really in the physical shape to be there.
