Just a bit of fun As far as I know pitches are all marked out in imperial measurements. For free kicks, we all know that the defender has to stand a minimum of 10 yards away from the ball, so, I assume that continental refs need to measure out 9.14 metres or the penalty area should be 16.4592 metres with the 6 yard box 5.4864 metres. With all these mental calculations to perform, it's hardly surprising the ref in the recent Ireland match couldn't tell the difference between the ball hitting a player on the back and handball.

Hope there is no lazy rounding going on in those referees brains!

Funnily enough, I've never really noticed it until you pointed it out!
I suppose it's a bit more snappy for commentators to say, "Dawson with a shot from the edge of the 18 yard box", rather than "Dawson with a shot from the edge of the 16.4592 metre box!"

When they step out the 10 yards, if you measure it I doubt it would ten yards.
