This post makes the assumption that the theoretical governance procedures are followed in practice. They aren't - I can assure you. That's true. However, it's also the case that in the spirit of continued improvement, said governance procedures are currently under review, in an effort to clarify responsibilities and tighten procedures. Any failures will be highlighted during process audits. I hope that is the case. I wonder if the Board will be forthcoming with the failings in the process to remove the manager? So will it be audited that 3 members of our board were not even consulted over the decision to sack the manager?

Sorry Al, not being difficult, but what would you like to comment on? Well just after your thoughts really. Start from the beginning and see where it takes you.. Ok, well assuming you are asking me to comment on this thread, I cannot personally get my head around sacking the Board. Even if it was the right thing to do, which it isn't , we don't have a dozen people with the right skills queuing up to replace them. There are a number of fresh faces in the boardroom, who must be given reasonable time to make their mark. I have met with them and indeed, worked with three of them in voluntary roles at the club. In my opinion, they are quality, well rounded individuals who, given the chance, will move us forward positively. We will miss Brian Burns though. Great fellow and a complete finisher. Key to all this though, is getting the right number of support volunteers, who can help them deliver results in what are now shared portfolios. It has to be remembered that the board are working full time for the most part and therefore need help. I hope this helps

Any failures will be highlighted during process audits. Can I ask how, as a non-board member, you are such an expert on the inner goings on, Richard? It concerns me greatly that you seem to know far more than most of us, despite not being a member of the board. Surely you should only know as much as any other CFU member, through the official lines of communication? Fair question, and happy to respond Firstly, I'm not an expert at all, but if I want to know something, I ring the club and ask. I also volunteer as part of the Governance team and that role brings me into contact with staff and board members on a regular basis. I'm also a member of the election management group and have served on various others work groups, including the organisational group that reviewed the relationship between the CFU and Ops Board.

Thanks for your response, Richard. On paper the changes being made look positive but it all feels a little too late. There is a real need for the board to start working as one, listen to the fans and win back the trust. It is clear that there are a lot of fans who feel let down by previous iterations.

I understand your concern Tarvin. I don't think anyone would argue that we have to work much harder and smarter to be more inclusive. I use the word "we" as we are all in it together

Maguire is not in this with the fans. He is not even a Chester fan. Oh and he milks 50K a year from our coffers for killing our club. An absolute disgrace.

If only we had brought in a proper Manager when McCarthy left. Things did not have to end like this.

I rather think that if you had been subjected to the levels of abuse that Brian experienced, then you would have considered similar action. His record as an effective director who worked tirelessly for our cause cannot be faulted.

Well, one thing you can say about Burns is he's stuck to his task, least he didn't jump ship at the first opportunity like Povey did.

It has to be remembered that the board are working full time for the most part and therefore need help. I hope this helps Thanks Richard. Wasn't really after your views about sacking the board. That's a non starter. As I said above, the new guys need time to come in and bring their own ideas and influence on the board. What I am interested in is a number of the board members who habe been there a good while now, who are contributing... And that us the problem I have. That some of those board members have had far too easy a ride at CFU meetings, and suchlike. Last Thursdays meeting was interesting, MM and MB came across very well indeed to be honest. Dave O'Toole from the sounds of it at least has ideas to promote the budget builder initiative but it needs buy in from others at the club, those responsible for marketing and the media team as well. What concerned me the most was the chairmans comments when he was asked about getting more kids in the ground, but then again you could stretch that out and say about getting others down there too. His reply "I've looked at all the data" sorry but doing the theory and looking at numbers isn't good enough. It needs a proactive and aggressive approach to try and reach out to our fanbase. I shared my plan for doing this with the board back in March/April. It's not been done. I just wish I could have got on and seen it through tbh. Oh well

He's been looking at the data for the last two years! He was elected to the board more than two years ago on a platform based entirely on his marketing background.
Precisely what has he done in those two years? I see no evidence of anything at all. As Al said - he had to contact the club himself and set up the really successful Twitter giveaway.

Can't help but get the feeling that MM runs the show because the board have appeared, from the outside, rather weak. That's terrifying IMO.

I would go one step further and say that I think Mark Maguire would wholeheartedly welcome a stronger board with a can do attitude.

He gets so much dumped on him he ends up thinly spread. Too many happy to do the bare minimum in the boardroom, on and off the pitch and in the treatment room.

Not enough strong characters in the board room with a 'can do' approach, and he is the only one who has the balls to come out and speak for the club. There is only so much he can do. It's not a job I would do, but if you have asked people to back you enough to vote you on the board then I think we can be entitled to expect a bit more progress.

Agreed. Maguire has done well in his role and is open and approachable. I think he'd love nothing more than fresh impetus on the board to drive ideas and make things happen. I very much get the impression he's doing his utmost to move things forward.
As for the board, I cannot say I'm impressed with the current state of affairs. At the same time, I'm not willing to put myself forward so there's a limit to how critical I can be.

Maguire is still working on the 100Club as well as the possible deal with Stagecoach which could bring significant money into the club. So if he gets both launched he'll have more than done his job. My problem is with a number of CFU board members who have been on that board for a number of years, yet have contributed nothing - or if they have they've not told us what they've done - bar extend McCarthys contract and blow the Sam Hughes money. The new blood on the board need a chance to probe themselves capable. But those deadheads need weeding out asap I'm not sure how you can claim that the Board have "blown" the Sam Hughes money. As pointed out by Laurence at the AGM, we have only had 50% of the fee. We might not physically have had the cash in our bank, that's due in January according to some, but we have already committed to spending it when we do get it via the playing contracts already in place. So it'll cube to us next year, but it's not new money we can use for new projects or players. Is that correct Richard?

You're just left guessing or listening to rumours. There clearly are issues at board level and have been for a number of seasons. Millington, OllerenShaw, Povey - we have been going through chairmen like hot dinners. All unexplained but all in a short space of time.
